Lets get a thread started about what kind of music people listen to in different types of games, or if you don't prefer music when your grinding.![]()
Personally, I normally only listen to music when I am playing against other players online. Sometimes if I have experienced the game music enough to where it gets boring, I'll switch in some of my own music to compensate. Normally techno, if it's a fast paced game.
It feels good when real music is playing in the background, because it feels like a movie. And thats your theme song you know??

alien ant farm - smooth criminal and gears of war worked really well for me
if the game is action oriented with style and panache, and fast paced then some progressive rock/ metal works well for me.
but for certain games like an rpg or assassins creed where the theme is clearly defined then custom music just doesnt fit for me. but lets say crysis there gameplay is defined by player experimentation custom music is good fun -

Not really, it's too distracting, especially since I mostly play FPS's, I need to hear footsteps so I don't get shot from behind.
-
Online games like CoD, yes I'll play music. Could be anything depending on the mood, I listen to a variety of genres and it doesn't change my game. But games built on the atmosphere I won't play my own music, could be a creepy game like FEAR or a fantasy land like Oblivion.
-
I listen to death metal while I game so I don't have any remorse when slaughtering all my enemies.
-
When I used to play MMORPG's, then yes, I had diffrent playlists for diffrent games .. mostly metal/rock.
With ARPG's or other type of games - no. However I do turn on my playlist when playng games on PS3, usually in Burnout Paradise or WipeOut HD. -
-
Depends on the game. Generally for all NFS games i have my own playlist playing as the in game music is boring and repetitive. But for a Civilization or Total War game, a rock/metal background just won't gel. But take my advice and try Death Magnetic by Metallica with a game like Unreal Tournament 3 - really enjoyable blowing people up with rocket launchers to a soundtrack of " I will hunt you down without mercy, I will hunt you down all nightmare long..."
-
I listen to mostly Rock (some Techno) when playing TF2
-
Some times I listen to Musi -
Depends on the game and match type. Almost 95% of the time, if I'm playing a deathmatch, gungame, or most matches in CS:S, HL2 DM, UT3, CoD 4 etc. I'll be listening to metal or death metal. If it's a server with only few people in it, say only 4-8 players, I'll keep all music off to hear the footsteps and move slowly. I also listen to music while playing stuff like STALKER, and FC2 where there's alot of freeroaming and not much actual dialog during for long sequences of time, but of course press the pause button when there's a part with dialog.
-
I usually listen to music when I'm playing Warcraft III and when I use to play mmorpgs. I usually don't listen to music when I'm playing fps though because I gotta hear sounds haha. The type of music I usually listen to is trance, game music or instrumental - something that I can play on a loop usually but I'm not necessary playing this kind of music all the time.
-
Like most people, I don't listen to music for like RPGs and campaign of games.
Multiplayer, however, is different since you can only stand game soundtracks for so long before they become infuriating to listen to so I usually listen to some techno or trance while playing Dota or Starcraft or Counterstrike or any games like that -

Only single player game I'll listen to music in is STALKER and STALKER CS, I prefer very moody stuff, like the Ghost in the Shell soundtrack (nothing beats "Floating Museum" when in a full on fire fight!).
As for BF2, I like rock. Preferably Audioslave, Jane's Addiction, Alice In Chains, MC5, Motorhead and Metallica. I have the best memory of playing BF2 on the Gulf of Oman map when my team was getting pounded by artillery on one of the middle close to the beach control points, and I was listening to "To Live is to Die" by Metallica specifically the middle part of the song with the down point and solo, it felt like real war as we were fighting for our lives to hold the point, getting hit with arty, air strikes. I remember getting revived during the arty after being wounded and we began to fight back as the solo had just ended. It's one of the best gaming moments I've ever had, it was so SURREAL
For BF2142, I go moody and what I call "transcedental" because it evokes that sense of "unknowing" and mystery that the game does. I have a specific mix for it in Windows media player that has music from the anime movies Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade, Princess Mononoke, Ghost in the Shell, Cocteau Twins, The Church, Metal Gear Solid tracks, Ace Combat 3, Xenogears, as well as Macross Plus and Zone of the Enders. It's my favorite mix and it's so awesome to go into battle to the song "Dogfight" from Macross Plus, goes well with BF2 also!
For Call of Duty 1 and 2 I prefer heavy rock and metal like Slayer, Pantera, Metallica because it's just pure violence.
For CS:Source, I listen to any form of rock mostly, but I'll listen to anything honestly, as I like listening to techno sometimes while playing, because it's just a silly game like that.
Those are my main multiplayer games -
the first thing i do when i start a new computer game is...
menu ~> sound options ~> turn off background music
i always have music playin when i'm gamin. i have trained myself to be more alert in FPS games. since i can't hear footsteps and stuff as well i learned how to move with my cover and check every single corner. i don't remember the last time i heard a computer game's background music lol. -
I like to listen to music while playing rpgs solo and fps' online. Eventually i couldnt play COD4 without my xbox playing a playlist in the background. WoW when im just grinding and recently ive gotten around to playing warcraft 3, the sound effects in that game get pretty repetitive.
I also listen to music while doing homework, keeps my mind on my work much better than tv haha. -
I don't listen to music at all when playing. I like to be completely "in" the game. I tried but it didn't work. Not even for Sim City. Or any RTS.
-
I put power metal on in games like fear 2 so I don't mess myself!
I'm quite strange, I listen to happy prog rock like coheed and cambria while slaughtering people on DOWII. :d -
What kind of music do you listen to?
I think the best music that gets me in the mood is NIN. -
mehhh i dont really liek it i wanna hear them before they hear me
-
some games have great soundtracks
.... like "Command and Conquer: Red Alert" series.
I just finished RA3.... great sound track that passes the time in the RTS world. -
I listen to punk rock music when playing cs 1.6/source.
-
I suppose if youre in a serious match with another team, then you should not have music on. To hear footsteps or what not. But for me, I always need some kind of music on. Even if its as low as possible and you can still hear the game well.
Even when Im flying, we connect ipod to our ics and listen to music. Very low, but still theres music so you can get in the zoneeee
And Ive always wanted to listen to some real Punk. Im a big fan of music. I started DJing when I was 12 and then got a drumset when I was 15. I love all music if it has some kind of passion behind it.
What are some of your favorite Punk artists/songs?
-
On the PC, I like to appreciate the in-game ambient sounds. You gotta give credit to the game developers and the efforts they had on producing the soundtrack. I think listening to your own music when you play takes away some essential features of the game that will make you worse at playing it. For examle, in BF2, if you played w/ your own music, you wouldn't hear enemies coming or a grenade nearby, or footsteps, etc. For FEAR2, you wouldn't appreciate the ghoulish sounds from Alma and company.
However, on the PSP and portable consoles, I usually play while listening to music from my Creative Zen Vision M. -
i have 2 playlists. 1 is full of mixtape songs and southern rap (not that soulja boy and dancing BS). my other playlist is the "chill" one. it has everything from 'lionel richie - hello' to vietnamese/chinese coffee shop songs. -
For CS:S I listen to the in-game radio thing they have on servers or my own music, however. For games like UT, I don't bother. UT has some good music, most single player games I find don't need music because F.E.A.R and Doom and stuff the environment noise is a big part of the game. But as someone said for games like Gears of War, were when you just wanna have fun after you beat the game or something. Yea then why not, GTAIV has the car radios with your own music and then the other stations which is good.
-
Yeah, haha the GTA radio stations are a must to listen while ur playing. They are so hilarious. But then again, if youve been playing it for awhile, its get repetitive. but you have to play it for awhile to start hearing the same things over again.
