I have a question, do games such as Oblivion, Fallout 3, COD4, The Witcher, etc. auto-detect you have a 64-bit os or due your have to somehow set it to 64-bit everytime you run the application?

it will run as a 32bit application, nothing needs to be done

It should run in 64 bit to fully optimize the game. That seems b.s. to me.

what bog said, if it was made for a 64 bit environment, or if there is a separate thread capable of 64bit, then it will run as that, but other wise( and usually for games) it will be 32 bit.

some games have a 64bit executable.
most do not.
i dont think any of the games you mentioned are compiled for 64 bit.
some games that have 64 bit versions include:
(older games):
Half Life 2
Far Cry
World of Warcraft
(new games):
Crysis, (soon, if not already) Crysis Warhead
others i dont know about -
Some games are also optimized to perform better in the x64 enviro, such as GTA IV, even though the actual applications are compiled in 32-bit.
Do games auto-detect 64-bit?
