    Do games run fine when installed on an external USB 3 drive?

    and would it be worth putting a budget SSD in that external enclosure, rather than a SATA drive? Or does the usb bandwidth bottleneck it anyway?

    Games would run ok. I wouldn't bother with a SSD though. You'd have improved random read/writes but would be bottlenecked massively on the sequential read/writes Just stick to spinners.

    SSD would help if it's usb3+ the throughput is high.
