I personally use strategy guide when I play RPG. If there is a cheat, I use it to beat the hard levels. I use it because I just want to finish the game. On the other hand, my friends told me that they would never use cheat/guide when playing the game because only noobs use them. And I laugh at their face.

What about you guys, do you use use cheat/guide or are you against them?

    Cheers,

I think they ruin games. IF theres say a puzzle in an rpg and a guide tells you how to beat it or a cheat skips that puzzle, where is the sense of adventure or surprize in the rpg?

Most of the time, the frustration of being stuck, stifles the gameplay more than using guides.

I can't understand how any rpg gamers wouldn't use it. I don't play them myself, but I have enough to know that sometimes the rpgs sense of logic doesn't make any sense when you are trying to advance in the game.

I generally don't cheat, but if there's a better play style out there (like in a RTS game) then I'll definitely check out a strategy guide.

It's not noobish to look for advice - only to act like you don't need it.

I don't cheat. Whenever I even try cheating, all the fun in the game evaporates. Games are fun because there are rules that are challenging, you have to obey them to succeed. If I can run around with infinite health, what's the point? After a couple of fights you know there is no challenge at all and the game is no longer fun.

I have used guides a TINY bit before, but only in cases where after multiple attempts and several days (or even years) of trying to get past a challenge have failed me.

But this is all relative, you should do what you enjoy, as long as it doesn't massively ruin everyone else's experience in multiplayer. If cheating makes the game fun for you, go ahead. If using a guide makes you feel more comfortable, go ahead. I don't...but that's my personal choice.

i think most ppl were referring to levels/puzzles that were destructively illogical/frustrating by defect of game itself, not necessarily using god mode to bulldoze through the game. it's one thing to pose good challenge but another to badly implement something that hinders gameplay.

so far most FPS's were straight forward enough to get through at normal. RPG's i normally use online tutorial when i get stuck at some point in game. RTS/TBS are only ones i try not to use any cheat/guides if possible since i do enjoy good challenge when it's at least when it's somewhat relevant to gameplay. no harm in using guides especially when you casually play all types of games and some of standard gameplay mechanics in specific genre are not immediately obvious or recognizable to you. but purists will always be purist no matter what they do :)

I cheat if/when I get frustrated because I can't pass a certain spot even though I've tried it five or six times. I'm all for progress and fun, not for timing my moves to the nearest fraction of a second, which is usually why I can't pass an area. That or there's issues or glitches that make it difficult to proceed.

I played Doom 3 without a cheat about 75% through. Then it got ridiculous and got bored of dying. Except tried the final boss without a cheat. Those are always fun to figure out.

I only cheat after I've beaten a game on its hardest difficulty level.

Playing Crysis with a 20x speed mode is very entertaining, if you run into a small hill or incline you can get rocketed hundreds of feet into the sky and can choose to deploy your parachute before hitting the ground.

I rarely, if ever, use "real" cheats. IE, god mode, unlimited ammo, and so on. Silly little things like spawning 50 skeleton warriors to swarm the guards in a city, however, are A-OK.

When I was younger I would use cheat codes but I generally don't use cheats because they usually kill the fun and strategy involved in a game. If I'm really stuck I will put the game down for a couple of days and then return to it later, if I'm still stuck I will consider looking at a user made walkthrough. The last strategy guide I bought was for Final Fantasy 1&2 : Dawn of Souls for the GBA and I only bought it because it came free with the game off Ebay and guess what I didn't finish the games...

I always try to beat a game without cheats, but I do use guides or cheats when I get stuck sometimes. Cheating just makes beating a game less enjoyable
However, I do enjoy playing some fps with god mode and all weapons just for fun occasionally

I never use cheat codes to win a game - takes the fun out of it for me - but occasionally I'll try them out just to see what they do. Stuff like O Canada in AOM - might as well try it out in a single-player skirmish once. Low gravity mode in car games is probably my favorite, for some reason it's just really fun to make crazy low gravity jumps.

I do see how role-playing/puzzle games could get frusterating without them though - that frusteration is probably why I don't play them.

I've never bought an official strategy guide, as figuring out a game on my own is half the fun. If I really like a game I'll eventually check out its forum/fansite and probably pick up a technique or three there, but by then I've already got a pretty good idea of how to play the game.

Here's my dilemma: When you play a game of solitaire that you know you can't win, do you cheat?

One one hand: who else would know but you? It's a victimless crime! On the other hand: you'd know that you cheated at solitaire...

It's almost like a matter of honor... or a moral dilemma. Or something.

People who cheat in multiplayer games, though, are going to burn in a very special level of Hell. A level they reserve for child molesters and people who talk at the theater.

I used to use guides when I was younger, but now I've become somewhat of a purist. I think that guides take the challenge out of a game. However guides for multiplayer are good as it improves your play style.

I feel that some people take this TOO seriously. It's just a game... You may feel accomplished by beating the game with out guide or cheats. For people like me, I feel nothing. I just want to play and beat the game. After I beat the game, I'm done.

i usually won't use cheats until i've beaten the game. the only other time i look at a guide or for a cheat is when i'm stuck and have tried the same part over at least 5 times.

Ctrl+Alt+Del's take on this issue: LINKY

IMHO, playing some games closely following guides would ruin the experience, e.g. in Portal if you knew how to beat each puzzle without thinking, then it kind of makes the challenge moot. However, I can also understand how running through an FPS, say Bioshock with infinite ammo and all plasmids just laying waste to everything, would be fun (although if you play carefully enough you can do this 'legitimately').

Playing with guides and cheats also makes it so you don't have to worry about some of the challenges the developers made. How much different would the resident evil series be if you didn't have to conserve ammo or Doom 3 with invicibility? Much less suspenseful (*sigh* another mutant trying to ravage my face *yawn*).

There are followers in both camps. A purist will feel like their 50$ is wasted if they cheat whereas a casual gamer may feel like they don't want to pay 50$ and get frustrated. Personally I feel that a large part of gaming is overcoming the challenges the developers put into their games. And I know that there are a few games that I feel were ruined by my being tempted to look at a guide.

Another gaming issue that would be interesting to discuss would be 'How Does Power-Gaming Affect Gaming Experience'.

Guides should only be a if your super stuck kind of thing. Or maybe for a replay since the wow factor is gone the 2nd time thru and you want to find the cool stuff you didnt the first time thru (this mainly goes for RPG's with secret items/chars)

Cheats will totally ruin the game and should only be used in a replay to mess around or temporarily if your super stuck. I probably should have cheated at the end battle in Crysis because I died like 60 or 80 times due to the bazillion alients shooting at me and the bug that kept me from killing the final boss. Didn't even think to cheat I was too into it and kept reloading my save until finally by zues's beard I finally beat it.

I used to make finding cheats a part of the game as I know how to do some reverse engineering to games and edit there memory. So I can cheat in games that do not even have cheats so its cool to add things to the game. I did this way back when I was like 12 years od playing final fantasy 3 on my SNES, I created game genie codes to add wepons and skills to my characters that you normally could never get. It was quite fun being able to use boss abilities :p

And FF7 was never better than when I got to play thru the game as Sephiroth. So cheating in that way can be fun and add to a game but thats not really cheating thats editing the game. Doing any of this stuff online or in multiplayer games is a no-no and the difference between a white hat like me and a black hat.

don't mean to be off topic but, jeez, you really did the final part of crysis over and over that many times? my first time it took 3 tries, then i reformatted and lost my save and this time had a bug and where ever i moved, at about 20ft i fell through the ship, so just gave up cause i already knew what happens.

When I'm playing through a game the first time, I don't cheat. If I'm playing the game for a second or third time, I might use cheats because the game will undoubtedly get repetitive after the first time.

I never cheat, not even after I beat the game. using guides is the same as cheating, you're basically defeating the purpose of the "game" by knowing exactly where to go, what to do etc.. It's the same as watching someone else play the game. The point of a game is the challenge, figuring out what to do, then mastering it, that's the fun part, if you know you can never lose, or never have to try again, then what is the point? You may as well be watching a movie..

Also, what's the point of buying a game for the PC, installing it, then cheating/reading a guide all the way to the end just to say that YOU beat it? It wasn't you who beat it, it was whoever wrote the guide book.

    Hi,

First of all, many people do not brag that they beaten the game. Second, some people don't care the fact that they used cheat/guide to beat the game. I guess one of the main reason for using guide/cheat is like watching a movie. I know where to go and get everything while not worried by the fact that I might have missed really powerful weapons.

Unless your hardcore, many casual players uses guide/cheat because it makes the game so much easier. Remember, I am talking about CASUAL players.

the point of playing a game is for ENTERTAINMENT surprise surprise! it's not about racking up legitimate points or developing pure gaming $killz. people can play however they wish if they're having fun in the process. most casual players would rather spend time and energy into something more worthwhile like studying for med school.

Well for me, most RPG's if there's a spot I can't figure out after some time (like a couple of hours) I usually take a look at some hints and if not, the full guide to that section. It's not always satisfactory playing out a game without thinking. For fighters and FPS, I read around to get ideas to tactics and combos, it takes more time to master combos then to randomly find ones out for me...

i'm a pretty casual player and i only use a guide if i have repeatedly failed at a part of the game.usually you'll only miss a weapon if you don't look around the area for anything, you don't necesarily(?) need a strong weapon to get through a game.

I get official strategy guides usually for the pretty pictures. xD
And I use guides mostly if there are alternate endings in the game. I'm not the type to replay a game soon after one playthrough to see the best ending; which usually isn't an alternate ending but is an incomplete ending.

I will use the guide also if I stumble upon a side-quest/secret area that I don't fully understand and have a feeling its not a returnable event.
