I always see people crave for the latest and greatest hardware so they can play BF4 ULTRA settings, but what about the good older games?
I am talking about all games that came out before lets say 2009 just to set a date. I got TONS of games that i didnt play yet that are now considered old by many people. Classics like Dragon Age, Mass Effect and Fable are just a few worthy mentions of games i have not been able to play yet. SO if you are a person that crave the latest hardware so much have you already played ALL the good older games? Or do you just want to play the NEWEST game?
Give me a 8800m GTX and a Intel dual core and i would be able to play TONS of older games i have not had the time to play yet. SO why are people so obsessed about constantly upgrading for the latest and greatest?
Right now am playing Fable (9 hours in) and NWN2 (78 hours in) and they are amazing!

Because some people enjoy multiplayer games which you have to remain current otherwise the player base drops significantly over time. I agree, I have a huge backlog of single player games I could get by with an older setup. I even have a desktop with Windows 98 and a Voodoo card to play my old 3Dfx Glide games. But sometimes you want to play a couple recent releases and need the hardware to do so.
I enjoy single player games for the most part, just because there's usually a story, a plot, and some engaging and varying gameplay. But even then if I enjoy a game like Crysis which will work fine on older hardware, if you play it and enjoy it, then you want to play the sequels, and need a beefier system to play it. -
I'm playing Sacred 2 (2010) and Drakensang: The Dark Eye (2008) currently.
-
And then there's D2, which is so much better than D3 it isn't even funny...
Yes... I play D2 all the time and have a dosbox emulator so I can play a number of other classics like Master of Orion, Master of Magic, and others. -
Hmm... Axis and Allies (2004), Command and Conquer Generals: Zero Hour (2003) with mods, Civ4 (2005) and the expansions, SimCity 4 (2003), and a few others. Newest PC game that I've played in full was Portal 2 (2011).
I guess a lot of people are obsessed with newer games thanks to multiplayer action (multiplayer servers are active for only so long), their friends pressure them into it (this is why I own MW3 on the Xbox 360), and I suppose it's also because of graphics. But for me, I'd much rather have a decent story line (Ace Combat 6 and below), decent single player mode (lacking in a lot of newer games), and to save $60 for each new game I don't buy. I've pretty much lost all interest in newer games and the only game I was planning on buying new (whatever was coming up after Ace Combat 6) turned out to be a huge pile of stinking trash (Ace Combat: Assault Horizons).
Not to mention the DRM in newer games being so freaking invasive and hindering gameplay so much that I would rather go without. I hope you're listening, EA and Ubisoft! -
Once am done with fable am gonna try jade empire. I don't see why I should get a new game instead since there are so many cheap and good quality old games that I have not played yet.

Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl and mode ...

Picked up ultima 7 on GOG a while back... Nostalgia overflow. Also, Outcast. Have wanted to replay System Shock 2, but haven't had time.
As far as post-2000 games, keep going back to Dragon Age Origin and Fallout 3.
Nice thing with older games, as mentioned, is you get a top-quality experience without the requirements so can play on lighter, less expensive laptops. -
I play everything from Space Quest to Far Cry 3. Why should I limit myself to the old?
-
Been playing a lot of Roller Coaster Tycoon lately.

Typically how it goes for me is I loved games the first go round (late 80's-early 00's), will dig out old copies, get Dosbox or GOG or VirtuaBox versions running, and then simply get bored with the gameplay or graphics... don't get me wrong, I am not a graphics only guy, but it's just tough to get back into most 90's or even early 00's games. My memories of them are just so much better than reality because it's all I knew at the time. I have awesome memories of loving them, but more than not I usually am disappointed. There are some exceptions of course (absolutely love Interstate '76), Klingon Academy (2000), Kingpin (1999) are still recently played, and am currently obsessed with Air Bucks (1992) running on DosBox along with Theme Hospital, but always go back to the newer versions of the games.
Of course, I don't consider anything since around 2005 or so old either
EDIT: Was just looking through some installed games, and somehow forgot SimTower ('94)! Major time suck still to this day, great little game. -
I was just playing Baldur's Gate the other day. I also have Morrowind installed on my Alienware, fully modded of course. I play old games all the time, really, so it's no big deal to me. Old games still are playable and fun, especially classic RPGs which is my favorite genre.

its been such a long time that I dont play anything...

ah the good days of monkey island and day of the tentacle! and red alert! or super soccer world championship (in the sega genesis!)! or enduro! -
Lately i have been playing Gamecube and PS2 emulator...
This time i will finish persona 4. thanks to the save state feature. -
One game that I keep telling myself to go back and play is Freelancer. I've started it a half dozen times, just never made it very far, and I don't know why. I really enjoyed it. And it plays on pretty much anything these days. One of these days I'll just install it on my trusty old AMD E-350 notebook and finish it, lol.
-
LOL. i don't play new games really. most of them suck with the exception of the witcher. most the games today lack a good storyline or character development. most are just about graphics. you don't even need a storyline with lots of twist, you can have a simple storlyine but if you do it right, it's amazing. an example would be final fantasy 9.
when i play games these days, i 90s games like metal gear solid 1, final fantasy 9, chrono cross, tekken 3. -
I think graphics and graphics card forums, as well as general gaming ones - including this one - tend to attract more of the people who are always on the bleeding edge. The type of people who will read a thread about the GTX 780M, for instance, generally are the ones who want to play BF4 on Ultra settings. If you mainly play older games, you're more likely to go to forums about whatever game that is - or perhaps a general old game forum (I'm not familiar with any, but I'm sure there's some out there). Knowing about the latest hardware won't help, but a game-specific site's expertise on configurations that work well will.
Personally, I don't consider 2008 to be old. Among my stable of games, at least for the "vanilla" version of a game, it's probably actually slightly newer than average. In no small part this is due to having been a poor college student for several years recently, and thus mainly picking up games that were on sale on Steam for low prices - and thus generally weren't the latest games. In part it's because if a game's new to me and fun, and there aren't technical issues in the way, I don't care if it's made in 2003 or 2013. The latest example is Sim City 4, which I started playing for the first time in March. It's made in 2003, but to me, having only played Sim City 3000 before, it's the latest and greatest Sim City. Sure, it might only support 1600x1200, but there's no major technical issues, it has fun and immersive gameplay, I can build decent-sized cities, and it has a robust single player mode. Until I've played through it more, I see no reason to shell out for the new version - might as well wait till it drops in price and bundles more stuff in the base game.
Lots of Rome Total War (2004) this year, too. I'd done one campaign on it before, but that was in like 2008 or 2009. I did pick up ETW and NTW on Steam awhile back, and haven't played them, but just felt like playing in the Roman era. I knew R2TW is coming out, but I wanted to play in February for free, not fall for $60!
Sim Tower was also fun in the day, though I haven't played it in a long time. 16-bitness doesn't help.
In short I more or less follow this philosophy:
[BTW please don't give any spoilers, HL2 E1 and E2 are on my hopefully-going-to-play-this-year list. I did play HL2 back around 2010] -

I would recommend installing at least europa barbarorum on that rome tw of your, roma surrectum is good too. Because otherwise there might not be an easier game to play, nor a more boring one.

I also have Arcanum near the top of my backlog which I had never played somehow. But first in tackling the slightly newer stuff. It think I need to get the willpower to put a moratorium on purchasing games so I can get through my insane backlog. -
Love old games. I mean 10-15 years old games like Final Fantasy VII, VIII, IX, X, FarCry (2004) (still playing online), Earth 2150 and many others. Superhiper graphics don't give me any pleasure.
-
I haven't played any recently. Still got half life 2 episodes 1 -2 to finish. Have fall out 3 but never even booted it up!
-
I've played Half-Life 2 and Half-Life 2: Episode 1, but I'm currently going through Black Mesa (as I never played the original game) and then I can get to Half-Life 2: Episode 2 (by which time they will have probably released the next one). -
So I'm on a SimCity 4 binge now lol. Going to shoot for a region of 4 million at least. Though my cities are so far capping at around 200,000...
-
I still like playing adventure/rpg games from 90s with dosbox
Been also playing system shock 2 off steam. -
It is possible to have an appreciation for the classics while still enjoying new games. -

I used to do MAME so like 1200 Arcade games.

3 hour into Unreal 1 now and the graphics is pretty good still with high res textures. It is the first game i played that gives me motion sickness so after 30 mins of play i usually almost throw up...
Will try to finish it though as its pretty fun, a lot more fun than Bioshock -

I'm currently considering installing either the original Ultima 6 or the Dungeon Siege total conversion mod The Ultima 6 Project. The Ultima series owes a lot of its superiority to being developed before 3D gaming became popular and viable, so more focus was given to creating an interesting world, but I feel like Ultima V: Lazarus, and likely the Ultima 6 Project, is superior to its predecessor, partially thanks to the more modern game engine and partially thanks to being developed by teams working with few financial or timeline constraints (i.e. non-profit developers with no deadlines), so they were able to take the foundation of the original games, slap them into a newer engine, and make them better by expansion. The biggest issue with the Dungeon Siege mod versions is that they're buggy and the Dungeon Siege engine has never run very well on any machine I've owned... -
