Besides SimCity (2013), here's another reason why I don't buy/play new games anymore. I was actually thinking of picking up BF3 soon after release, but it turned out to be a clusterf**** compared to BF2 and DICE flat-out lied by saying the BF3 was a successor to BF2:
http://www.mordorhq.com/showthread....ttlefield-Franchise-Its-Community-amp-EA-DICE -
I was unaware that Simcity and BF3 were the only games released in the past 2 years.
-
Well, they were big ones and on my mind. I haven't kept up with the games market for the past 2 or so years, so forgive my lack of knowledge on other game titles
.
But as for BF3, after personally playing 1942 (plus expansions), Vietnam, 2, and Bad Company 2, and watching my little brother play BF3 day in and day out on the Xbox 360, I can't say with a straight face that BF3 is a true successor to BF2. It's more of EA's version of MW3 if you ask me (a game that I play regularly still). As for the article, it was very well-written and I enjoyed reading it at least. I tried playing BF3 using his account, which has just about everything on it, and besides aircraft and vehicles, I don't see why I'd buy it when I already have MW3. -
It isn't a true successor. I guess if you were really expecting that, it would make sense to be disappointed, but I think that the outrage has been extremely overblown AND there are a lot of people that think that not being a carbon copy of BF2 with updated graphics makes it a bad game.
Now, I actually don't think SimCity is a very good game and I'm kind of disappointed that I bought it at launch. But still, there are plenty of excellent games that have come out recently that were worth buying. -
Eh, a lot of my old favorites changed for the worse imo. Besides the two already mentioned, I'm pretty disappointed with EA's current Command and Conquer being an online-F2P-only service (I would have gladly paid $60 for a full game, SP and MP, with that Frostbite engine and Generals storyline/units), Black Ops II and Ghosts are just the same stuff rehashed without even minor improvements (from what I can tell), Brawl plays worse than Melee (though the map creator was nice, and Metaknight is an interesting, if not overpowered, character), I've already ranted about Assault Horizon more than I care to admit, and Assassian's Creed II wasn't too interesting imo (though I haven't tried out the newer ones admittedly). As for Civilization, I need to spend more time with 5 before I judge it.
It's fine if you like BF3. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. I guess I'm just more picky about games I suppose. Probably also matters that as I start spending my money more on other essential things like bills and whatnot, I'm finding it harder to justify game purchases in general. -
Some of my recent purchases that I've been happy with are FC3/Blood Dragon, Max Payne 3, Crysis 3, and Bioshock Infinite. There are still lots of quality games coming out, even if certain recent releases have been disappointing.
-
Haven't heard and/or played the other games, but Infinite was a very, *very* good game. My roommates bought it on day one of release and replayed it maybe a dozen times. Loved the storyline, though I haven't personally played it (because of watching them play through the whole game). Maybe I should have stayed in my room and not watched
-
Infinite was probably the first game I've played in a while that I stayed up until 2 AM playing just because I was locked in to the story. It was the equivalent of a book you can't put down. I was also really sad when it was over. Definitely one of my all time favorites along with the original.
-
The ending f**ed with my mind lol. I didn't see it coming until the very end.
But the best surprise was when I checked out FanFiction.net for Infinite fanfics. So funny to see many of the authors unintentionally make a very messed up pairing lol. -
One of the best things from old times was splitscreen. Best times I had with Jump´n´bump: Jump'n'Bump
-
At the moment i have a 14 inch Notebook with AMD Athlon II (dual core), 2GB of RAM and a Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series.
The lack of computer hardware is not an obstacle for playing good games. I bought Neverwinter Nights Diamond Edition from GOG.com and i am having tons of fun
-
Definitely not, I loaded up Diablo 2 for the hell of it. Still a ton of fun. There's just something about the atmosphere that's darker and more foreboding than Diablo 3.
-
Well I play Counter-Strike: Source pretty much every day if I am able. I also like to fire up older stuff such as Morrowind (when Skyrim doesn't suit my fancy?). I enjoy the power of modern CPU/GPU to power through those old games loaded up with mods, or other inefficient programs such as emulators that benefit from extra power.

I loved Freelancer but the dog ate my disc... no really she ate my disc. I have tried a couple of times to get another copy but (I think it was Microsoft) stopped making it and it is not available for download anymore.
-
I recently loaded up Freelancer with the Crossfire community mod.
I love that game... and at the very least I get to play it at 1080p. (yeah there are some annoying additions like the billboard at New York, but so far so good)
It's like an expansion and a half... more story, more ships, more worlds, more weapons, better balance, enemies that use tactics and shield batteries and nanbots.
Yes, I realize much of the content is better if multiplayer, but its really nice to stretch your Freelancer wings like this. -
Freespace Source Code Project has released an RC for 3.7.0. You can't beat that game for the genre.
-
Not recently,but I miss them
-
I still play through df2 Jedi knight from time to time. Still my fav. God the bless the folks who created the patches to run it on modern hardware.

Thank you so much for posting this. Freelancer is my all time favourite game ever. So much so that I've played it through probably 20+ times! I'm very excited about getting the mod you mention.
Is it easy to install the mod? Anything you need to change or mod or is it literally patch and play?
My retail disc got scratched to oblivion and I could no longer use it so I downloaded a cracked copy with the rational that I've already paid for the game and therefore its not illegal
-
Hmmm let's see. I still play DoTA sometimes at least once a week for about 2-3 hours (been playing a lot of LoL lately). I also play some Fate when I have the time and counter strike (yeah the old one)!
The things is I am a little bit older now so I don't really have some time to play because I need to earn money,
-
I spent the whole of last night playing Out Run 2006 Coast 2 Coast such a good arcade racer
Admittedly my machine is overkill lol...
-
I read this thread and was persuaded to rebuy Stalker last night - Id forgotten how good it was - properly spooky and very hard to stay alive!

You will need FLMM, but really its just a fairly standard mod manager which makes it easier.
Freelancer is a Microsoft game, and thus is very ticky about being modded. You will need a fresh install.
The mod manager handles the patching... if you use a fresh install, it is relatively painless.
When setting to 1080p or any widescreen resolution for the first time, it will look odd. Restart the game with the 1080p setting to get the correct results. A reminder that all the HUD graphics are designed for lower resolutions.
The community programmers are impressive, but a tad out there. Some of the changes are genius, others are... odd. I consider it a fair trade-off for that much content and getting to see one of my favorite games bloom.
I highly recommend the new textures for Trent. he looks much better. For Juni, I guess its up to you...

I absolutely agree. -
Is there a torrent for that mod? I keep failing to get the entire 1.8GB from the official places. I usually despise searching for torrents but in this case I think it would help. I tried pirate bay but the latest version there is older 1.8.
-
Nothing beats a good adrenaline-rushed Quake or Unreal Tournament LAN game in the office!
Btw, still loving Soldier of Fortune... -
Sometimes I play Jagged Alliance 2, Age of Wonders:SM, The Longest Journey, Diablo 2 and Doomdark's Revenge. Look at the screenshot lol File : Doomdarksrevenge2.png - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
-
Ah, good times playing UT2k4

I lost my Return to Castle Wolfenstein cd, but that was also one of my favorites from back then. I remember a lot of the mutated enemies at the end scared me and I could only finish those levels with cheats on because I was afraid to die? Yeah, it was weird
The multiplayer was fantastic. Imo, it had the best medic/revive mechanic. You had to essentially kill someone twice. The first time you kill someone, you basically incapacitated them. They could respawn by themselves after a certain period of time OR a medic come come along and stick a syringe in you and you would revive with some of your health back (key word, some, not full health). But, as the attacker, you could shoot their body several more times to force them into respawning, so they could not be revived by a medic. This was the best way of making sure your enemy actually stays dead. In addition, a person could only be revived once I believe. It wasn't like in Battlefield 3 where you can be revived multiple times.
Of course the ultimate way of making sure your opponent stays dead would be to lob a grenade/rocket launcher to the face. A medic can't revive a pile of dismembered body parts

I still play older games of which two I still need to finish since I started but couldn't finish because of having two jobs and being to tired to play nowdays and plus getting older ... not young as I used to be. But I still like my two older games just for the pleasure of playing. I play NWN2, The Witcher plus I still have the older NWN as well. But I find a RPG game for me give me the most pleasure in game playtime. IMO something like WOW and likes are good but needing a live internet everytime for me when I can just fire up my laptop and play away. I might try to get Torn2 but the graphics don't compare to NWN and The Witcher even though it only cost 20US but I might take a dip and do it for the fun of the game itself. But I do also own a collection of Nintendo DS and 3DS games so I have other avenue of game play as well and need to finish some of those games I started but have yet to complete as well.
-
The Witcher series is fantastic, can't go wrong there. Do you own the first Witcher game?
-

I bought both Witcher titles! Love both games although I actually ended up playing the second game first.
Absolutely loved Witcher 2 on dark mode with the extra equipment! Except farming Nekkers was a pain... -

Yes got the The Witcher enhanced and The Witcher 2.....waiting for The Witcher 3 to see how it is.
Sometimes older is better and it's the pleasure of game play not how many bodies or point you can rack up but enjoying game play makes it more fun to play it over and over and you don't get tired of it even if it is considered old in term of game. -
Playing Return to Castle Wolfenstein on my Android phone with HD graphics...oh so nostalgic game
-
Is that in the play store? I could only find some ports of wolf 3d.
-
Fat Dragon Just this guy, you know?
I'm having a hard time imagining how you could play a game like Return to Castle Wolfenstein on an Android phone. Wolfenstein 3D makes much more sense to me... -
It's actually not that hard, just needs a little getting used to.
Here is me playing RTCW on a Nexus 4: Nexus 4 - Return to Castle Wolfenstein (with HD graphics patch) + NOVA 3 - YouTube
I may seem a bit clumsy, but the reason for this is because it was very uncomfortable to play while I was recording, off camera I handle it much better. Even though I only play it while I'm on the bus or train, but I am close to beat it, very addictive game. I remember having a real hard time beating the Super Soldier boss on PC, but surprisingly it was easier on the phone
hfm: here it is: RTCW4A.. You will need the PC version's game files (retail disc or Steam version) in order to play.
Speaking of old games on Android phone...Doom 3 runs on Android phones now, I made a few screenshots, this is how it looks on a Nexus 4: Doom 3 on Nexus 4. Unfortunately it is not an official port, so the FPS is very low, during fights it is barely playable... -
That's awesome DRevan, installing and trying to set it up now! Loved RTCW back in the day so had a copy readily available to copy files. Thanks for the info! Curious, any other great old PC games you are playing on Android?
EDIT: Working perfectly as advertised, very impressed. I still remember reading the PCGamer magazine preview a year before RTCW was released and them talking about the unbelievable graphics at the time (especially the flame throwers if I recall correctly)... and now it's maxed out totally smooth on my phone ha. Progress! Thanks again -
All this talk about Freelancer made me install it again, one of my all time favourites
Got it working in HD via some .ini tweaking, never tried that before. Good stuff! -
Argh! Is there another mirror for Crossfire 1.9 for Freelancer? I've tried to download it from ModDB multiple times, chrome always gives me a network error in the high 90% range.
edit: nevermind swat-portal.com seems to be WAY faster. -
Fat Dragon Just this guy, you know?
I really wish Chrome would integrate a better download manager... Downloading is by far the worst thing about the OS, IMO. Well, maybe it's tied with being incompatible with a lot of net security software I have to use, but that's really the fault of Chinese banks and other online services who still exclusively support IE... -
I spoke too soon, took me 20 minutes to get the file from swat-portal but I still got the network error when it completed. Never seen this happen before.. I have to assume these downloads are all completing and the error is thrown when my virus scanner (ESET) does it's thing. Again, never had this problem before. I'll try a different browser, I'm not one to trivially turn off my virus scanner.
EDIT: It worked on IE10, never thought i'd see the day.
-
I play mostly in the older games. Mainly because I do not tolerate Steam, Orygin , Uplay ...... I do not buy already new ones , that require these platforms ...
-
Interesting, why is that? Just wondering not trying to start an argument though it will probably happen.
Do you play old games?
