Someone mentioned it's still in the top 10 for most played. My guess is yes, there are just a few still playing.

I play the demo version, even though i own the deluxe as it has more players.
Still a great game to play, actually the only game i play on the pc, I prefer my 360 for gaming, I have BF2 for the 360 but i dont like it. -
Cool, il buy it than since my Geforce 7600go cant run the new one
-
It does, but you have to play around prime time (8-12 ET, 12-4 WT). I still play from time to time, but be forewarned as with any game past its prime, the playerbase is whittled down to vets & pros.
also, @Tinderbox, I don't understand - the demo servers were shut down a looooong time ago and I'd be hard-pressed to believe hacked demo servers would outnumber their legit counterparts...? -
Oh yea. Many. I play BF2 all the time. I am part of www.epichq.com
-
I play every day. Tons and tons of players
-
But there are hundreds of ranked servers still alive and well for BF2, and hundreds more of unranked servers, many with modded content.
Hopefully this is a message to EA / DICE that as far as the Battlefield platform is concerned, PC is alive and well. I shudder to say this, but I would gladly pay $10/mo for Battlefield 3 if they continued with new content on a regular basis. Just don't dumb it down for consoles. Just take BF2 improve on its weaknesses, use the BC2 graphics and destructive environments, and away you go.
I thought BC2 would replace my online combat urge for BF2 but so far it is lacking a little bit. It's fun, don't get me wrong, but just not as involved as BF2. -
as far as i know , Battelfield 2 has a lot of ppl playing it anytime worldwide... u should have no problems finding players...
-
-
I still play BF2 occasionally and runs excellent on my system. Heck I even still throw on Battlefield Vietnam which still has players too. -
I agree, but as much time as I've spent with BF2, it's probably the ONLY game I'd be willing to shell out a monthly fee to play. I agree though, I would never want to do that. I'd be happy to buy an expansion every year for $30-$40 instead of a monthly fee though. I'm sure if they offered a lifetime subscritption though, I'd buy that instead.
-
I got into BF2 before getting BC2 a few weeks ago, the latest patch has loads of servers on, I was surprised to see a good amount of players on Project Reality aswell but it's too hardcore for my liking! -

Nothing beats running down the middle of Karkand dropping Claymores at the first MEC flag. I still get kicked occasionally for my overuse of this tactic but damn it feels good.

You know I was about to make a thread exactly like this because hearing about Battlefield Bad Company 2 and everything brought me back to the memories of playing BF2. I remember BF2 was such a great game and was really fun, and felt like real warfare..or as close as it could get. I really loved the squad system, commander, and working as a team. I think I stopped playing because I was having desktop crash issues, and this was like 3-4 years ago. I still have my key and disk and with a new computer, had no issues.
Anyways, I've been playing a lot lately and I noticed though..there's a LOT less team work. It's just everyone for themselves and no one uses VOIP at all. I don't hear a single voice in the game, no one uses voice to work together. And usually squads never work together. I'm hoping to join a group of players who is willing to work together. I can imagine how fun this game would be if all 32 players on one team all worked together and listen to the commander and work as a team. I don't thikn that ever happens though.
Oh, to answer your question, yeah people still play, there's a good number of 64 full servers, but I notice these servers are all european or chinese. -
-
It also depends on which servers you play. I find Texas Team Players is the best in terms of team play (har har) and Quebec USQMC is top tier in terms of skill; while servers like NUNYA are full of incompetents, which is occasionally fun if you're looking for people to steamroll.

I wonder if BF2142 is doing well. It was a hard move from BF2 to BF2142 but once I got used to the changes I liked it better.
-
Check out this site. Has stats for number of players online at any given time. Seems BF2 is 4 times more popular than 2142. Kinda sad though that there's only 5000+ players online at any given time. I don't even want to know how this compares with the likes of WoW or other massive MMORPG.

Just something about running around in a 2 foot mech robocop style that adds charm to a game
Plus I think just burned out on BF2 from playing it so much so BF2412 was a good change of pace. I do not miss the heli & jet people either.
I'll get Bad Company 2 I think, but going to hold out for a decent sale. Preferably STEAM. -
Plus, and I'm sure you can appreciate this, I like modern weapons I can relate to. Futuristic weapons are cool and all, but its all just fantasy. I know what a PKM can do. -
I still play BF2, and it isn't hard to find a good server with people playing. Legion@War has some pretty good infantry only servers, just watch out for the grenade spamming

I think one nice thing about Bad Company 2 is the fact that it's shown how important BF is to PC players because if what I've been reading is true, there are more PC players than 360 or PS3 playing online. It does not necessarily mean more people bought the PC version (plenty of people will get it for single player, especially on consoles), but it shows that as far as the online component goes, it's important to PC gamers and we want more BF. I think there is no doubt in DICE's collective mind to get BF3 developed and out to PC gamers. Sure they will wait for Bad Company 2 MP traffic to die down a bit before releasing BF3, but lord knows that they should be able to release BF3 exclusively on the PC with full confidence that it will do well. Hell they can multiplatform it as long as the game is built for the PC first and ported to the other systems, I really won't care. I just want my BF3 full made for us PC gamers, with no compromises towards consoles. I'd hope for the return of jets, even larger maps, 128+ players a map, and my goddamn prone! -
Great replies. I am actually mostly playing on Texas TeamPlayers, and just tonight I finally heard someone talk over the mic after playing since Tuesday. I was telling him finally someone using the comm. I need to get my mic set up now that I know people use it. I would enjoy BF2 so much more if I didn't lag so bad. I don't know what it is about my internet but it spikes during peak hours from 6pm pacific to 11/12 am. Must be because I'm using comcast in a college town where everyone around me is probably torrenting and downloading a bunch, arg.

Things I want in BF2 Version 2.0 Patch (well if it exist)
1)Portable Anti-Air for Engineers(or AT) (Those plane are overpowered and anti-air capability sucks. Those AA Vehicle should have anti-air radar).
And those attack choppers are too maneuverable if you ever attempted the moves in real choppers they would have crashed.
2)When someone is revived they should only have half or quarter health.
I mean come on reviving someone becomes easier than killing someone?!!
3)UAV and SAT Scan do not track targets in buildings.
It is a bit ridiculous UAV comes with X-rays
4)2 grenade resup per support resupply those grenade spam is insane
5)More Sniper recoil while standing unless prone
Last but not least unlock for all weapons on all maps. -

Supposedly 1.5 was the final, though I would like to see a 2.0 that releases for free the rest of the expansion content like Special Forces. Portable anti-air would be very nice, though I think it should be part of the Anti-Vehicle, so one would have to choose between anti-air and anti-vehicle, however I myself have a hard time vs. anti-aircraft weaponry already. Don't really mind the X-ray UAV, though you're right, it does take some element from the realism. Sniper rifle fire is fine to me.
The big things I would want to see in a 2.0 patch, if possible:
- Increased draw distance, at least out to a couple km as opposed to what I think is current, which I think is maybe half a mile to a kilometer. The Project Reality mod managed to push the draw distance IIRC, don't know the distance
though.
- Perhaps an expanded range of weaponry for all classes
- A few more maps, maybe "best of" maps from mods, chosen by DICE programmers.
I seriously don't think DICE needs to say goodbye to BF2 just yet. The community is too strong, but it would be quite nice to have them release the source code, and make it free to play. -
I played until like a month ago
-
(1) anti-air and make it as part of anti-tank class, so you would choose anti-air or anti-tank upon spawn
(2) allow yourself to rekit at a supply crate, as in switch weapons or classes.
As far as draw distance, I'm good with it as it is. Wake Island is probably the most open and no fog. I think it's fine. Snipers can see everywhere pretty much through the scope. Maps like Karkand the fog keeps the gameplay interesting. -
There are a lot of ways to use the BlackHawk/other Russian helicopter effectively on that map, all you need is a squad that works together. -
Beyond using the blackhawk as a mobile spawn point have you ever had it full of decent gunners? A couple of people with LMGs, some decent guys on the turrets, and an engineer...you'll cut up infantry pretty fast. -
i'm too apprehensive to get BFBC2 because BF2 was such a good game, that i don't want BFBC2 ruining my vision on the series. i enjoyed 2142 and heroes actually, but i feel BFBC2 is really hyped right now, and the last hyped game i bought (MW2) i played for a week and haven't touched it since...
-
Well you can thikn about it this way if you buy BFBC2, you're supporting EA and Dice so they can further develop BF3 to make it reallly awesome. When you buy games, you're also supporting the company.
But..having said that, I haven't bought BFBC2 for the same reason..kinda. I just really liked BF2 and I'm reading BFBC2 doesn't play quite like BF2 with the huge maps and war on a grander scale. Seems more like a close quarter smaller infantry based game. I liked how BF2 felt like a real army fighting a larger battle. -
I'm about to start a game up right now. I see a lot of =REG= tags, but that's not the clan. I'll find out when I'm in game.
Oh man...and that Blackhawk? Yeah, that thing can be crazy good with the right pilot and pro gunners. During the late late late hours of the night, I usually come across these ridiculously amazing gunners who will just mow you down. Arg, but so satisfying to shoot em' down
*Edit* Server is run by =FaRT= IP: 216.246.108.58:16567 -
So far its very good and tons of ppl playing, the only problem is that punkbuster kicks me out from each server after 10 minutes of playtime. It says i tried to update the punk buster client while playing or something, any1 familiar with this?
And do u need gamespy to play it? Steam installed gamespy for me as well
Here is a screenshot its very annoying!
-
Just go here, download and run pbsetup, select Battlefield 2, point it to your BF2 directory, and select update.
If you're running from Steam be sure to turn off in-game community updates, it'll dump you out every time. -
Thanks i updated it, i hope it works now rep given
-
Hope it works for you. First thing now I do is if I get kicked more than once during any evening of BF2 is update PB.
-
yea, just spent a couple hours on the "HBD 4/7 Road Rage" map... I love flying that A10 Warthog! : "BBRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR KABOOOM!" I'm really hoping they keep flying around in BF3, maybe add some newer planes/HUD options. It would also be nice if squads could call in/mark airstrikes.
Gotta go make dinner but i'm thinking a bit more BF2 after dinner again, this game can get addictive when you haven't played in a few months! -
-
When you first play, you rank up quickly. But then it takes FOREVER to rank up the last couple times to get the rest of your unlocks. Sucks. I'm past that now, and am only a couple hundred points from 2nd Lt. I don't think I'll ever make it to 1st Lt. because either I'll get sucked into BC2 or BF3 will be released.
-
yea I'm closing the gap to 2nd Lt. as well and I've had this game since mid-2007. Definitely taking me forever to rank up now.
There used to be this great Battlefield community/forum, www.bf2player.com, but unfortunately it was shut down a while back. Anyone used to visit that site? -
No, but I use bf2s.com quite a bit to locate friends online. I had BF2 since release in 2005, and I'm still not to 2nd Lt.
LOL. I'm 20 points from 2nd Lt right now: http://bf2s.com/player/41007624/ -
Punkbuster was programmed by Satan, not only does it kick if you delete the intro vids (don't need to sit through 5 min of promos k thx), it completely ruined our BF2 LAN after constant PB kicks no doubt because the PB programmers are a bunch of incompetents who would rather shackle and handcuff honest players than take the time to detect real cheaters.
Anyways I just spent 16+ hours playing on Texas Teamplay over the weekend. I gave up the game years ago, but now it's coming back with a vengeance, I feel so disgusted. -
I never deleted the intro movies, but replaced them with null ones, and PB never kicks me.

Does Battlefield 2 still have any players online?
