I recently placed an order on a laptop (dell Inspiron E1705) and it came with the 256 MB Nvidia 7900 Graphics card. I'm hoping that I will be able to play at least battlefield 2142 with a high resolution and nearly all game settings at High quality with smooth gameplay. My specs are as follows, please let me know how this will run most of the games...

    Inspiron E1705, Intel Core 2 Duo processor T7200 (4MB/2.00GHz/667MHz)

17 inch UltraSharp TrueLife Wide-screen WUXGA, for Inspiron 9400/E1705

    2GB, DDR2, 533MHz 2 Dimm, for Inspiron 9400/E1705

256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GS, for Inspiron 9400/E1705

100GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive for Inspiron 9400/E1705

Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, English without Media, for Inspiron

-- Also I have a secondary question which is simply.. can I buy a spare 9-cell battery for the E1705, if so where, and how much would it cost? Thanks for the help!

    yes that would be possible

its best to buy the battery from dell because battery life starts to shorten right after they're manufactured so old battery, though new may still have a shorter life

Ok, only thing is that when I tried searching for a new 9-cell battery by itself for the inspiron E1705, I wasn't able to really find it.

i don't think the 9700GS could powered the BF2142 @ 1920x1200 resolution with all the settings turns to MAX, you need 512mb 7900GTX for that.

I'm not to sure you'll be able to play it on high settings at 1920x1200 resolution ( can play with max settings at a lower resolution though), you might have to do a mod to increase the performance of the card

    mod seen here
    http://www.notebookforums.com/thread180011.html

if dell finds out you did the mod you'll void your warranty, but if your card does burn out dell will have to revive or pull a bios image which takes a bit of effort on their part (which means they most likely won't find out and you'll still have your warranty)

*edit looks like i'm 3 minutes too slow

Well as long as I have lower possibly choices when choosing the resolution, then I should be fine

I have an E1705 with only one gig of ram and a slower hard drive and I can play 2142 on highest settings and get like 40-50 frames per second, so what you have there will be more than fine.

oh wow that is almost the exact notebook im looking to buy pretty soon. Dell seems to have the best prices right now. Let me know how it all turns out and how it runs games like Battlefield 2142. :)

One question though. Why did you choose the 2Gig 533MHz ram instead of some 667MHz to match your CPU?

Lol, believe me, it was tough picking out my laptop. My dad applied for the dell preferred account so we could pay for this and he only got a $2,000 credit limit. It was incredibly hard to fit everything I wanted in the laptop for under 2,000 and the reason being is that my dad refused to get the laptop without the 4 Year premium warranty.

Apparently, he worked with building appliances during sometime in his life and if anyone has noticed, OLDER APPLIANCES LASTED LONGER.

So, now a days, I'm told that there's a small "chip" or "Piece" which is put in appliances to MAKE THEM BREAK. So basically, if I didn't get the warranty, I would get a laptop which would have a piece in it which will end up screwing up the laptop sometime in the future. With the warranty, supposedly, I will get the laptop without it.

.. Anyways, Roughryder, I had to stay within 2,000 dollars and I already upgraded to the 7900 Nvidia graphics card with a 2.0 GB RAm and 7200 Hard drive, so I would be slightly over 2,000 with the 667 mhz for the Memory. I learned though that there isn't much difference in the 533 mhz versus the 667, and at some point, I was even told the 667 may possibly be overall slower. Not sure though.

So ya, I would have liked to get the 667 though probably.

    ...

a chip to make an appliance break....

tell me how a chip can make the belt in the washing machine break.

i think its unnecessary to get a 4 year warrenty because by the time it's 3 years old, there will probably be new 15.4 inch notebooks that are more powerful.

the best computer 3 years ago is nothing compared to the power of today's 15.4 inch notebook and technology is improving at a rate even faster then it did back then

ahh they got you with the 4 year warrenty eh? Oh well at least you will get decent customer support over the life of the notebook. I must agree with hmmmmm that the warrenty is probably not needed. The most common problem I have had with notebooks are harddisks failing after a while. However with a little bit of computer knowledge and some help from the forums im sure you could replace a notebook hard drive with a better/faster one if it did breakdown. It would still be cheaper than the dell 4 year warrenty.

Oh well, whats done is done. Its still a good choice of notebook imo. Ill probably place my order by Christmas.

He is right about the 667 ram though, it is overall slower, it has a higher latency.

Do you have any sources proving this? Not that I dont believe you, but I just want to see how big of a difference we are talking about.

Yea, I was incredibly upset that I couldn't at least stick with the three year warranty. Me and my dad were sitting on the phone not saying anything to the representive for like 5 min. at least because we were VERY close to getting my laptop under 2,000 dollars so I could buy it. The credit card limit as I said was 2,000, so I needed to get it like that. I didn't want to reduce the hard drive, the processor or anything.

I didn't know what to do. I'm sititng here yelling at my dad to just purchase it with the three year warranty!!! I was SOooo frustrated. I even was an hour late to work because of this. Well, in the end, we placed this order and had 300 dollars off because of a coupon. The next day, I checked the site at school and found a 25% off for the SAME laptop!! I'm like ohh Sh*t, I better get home and tell my dad to cancel the order before the 24 hours is up to cancel it for free. So I go to the restroom and use my cell phone to call up the house and have my dad pick me up in the middle of the day of school to do this.

So we got an awesome deal on the laptop getting almost 700 dollars off with this discount. I was pretty satisfied then.

**Does anyone know if later on I could upgrade the 256 MB Nvidia 7900 to a 512 MB .. or is that not possible for the E1705?

Sure, you just take that chip they slip into your notebook to make it break on purpose, insert it like *so* (sharp, stabbing motion) into your GPU, and it'll magically perform as well as that next laptop you'll be getting exactly four years from now.

yes you can put in a 7900 gtx in the e1705, it's just that the mod is pretty hard to do unless you know what you're doing
    some info about it here

although right now you can mod your 7900gs so it preforms near the level of a 7900gtx
