I know that for the longest time this game has had issues with AMD cards... it's a flash sale for only $5, does it work now or is it still terrible? Will it work okay on my card?

    Thanks.

ID Tech made a lot of compromises on Rage. The shadows in the game are minimal, compared to Doom 3, almost none. The texture quality also very low, due to memory issues with consoles. This was ID Tech's first cross-platform game, and was unable to develop a good compression technology for consoles. Skyrim, Crysis 2, BF3 all have higher quality texture while being fairly open/sand box like Rage. That's just my take on the game.

I thought they could have done more. But Rage was literally a Tech demo, a crappy one as most people think Doom 3 is a better game technologically. The story was too short, most of the time racing cars which was pitiful compared to playing a game like NFS or Dirt, so not sure why they focused so much on cars.

What is more curious is why they would do a tech demo... They signed an agreement in which only Zenimax (terrible) companies could use the engine. So what was the point in releasing a game that was short, with sub-par story and which looked to me, just a glorified tech demo. Whatever.

When it came out it had issues with both nvidia and AMD....

That being said, I played it nearly since launch on my HD5870m and had little issues, albeit annoying ones. The game is ok at first but not that hot. Wasn't motivated to finish it.

Oddly enough, the Mac port of the game runs surprisingly well. That almost never happens.

I played the game at launch and it ran like butter at 1920x1080 on my AMD 5830m. There was a mixup on the day of RAGE's launch with some kind of AMD performance beta driver for RAGE - AMD released the wrong driver and it caused some problems if you chose certain specific graphics settings in the Catalyst Control Center like smart Catalyst A.I. something or other. But that was more than a year ago and it was resolved within a week.

Since that time, I understand AMD has even implemented some hardware acceleration for partially resident textures in the Southern Islands family, so RAGE should run even better for anyone who has 7000 series I imagine, probably better than a comparable Nvidia card which lacks this megatexture acceleration feature. AMD's new PRT hardware acceleration feature in the Southern Islands graphics cards is a direct result of collaborating with id Software. (more info here and here )

This game uses a very innovative engine which makes it possible to get very high frame rate even on a machine with weaker graphics card, with very high res textures and great quality visuals. If you run into a wall or turn around really quickly, depending on your HDD speed and other factors, you might see the texture streaming slower or faster.

I agree with you about the car racing, it was kind of fun, but I'm not really into racing games at all. Would have been amazing with a team deathmatch or capture the flag mode.

However, I couldn't disagree more about the textures and the engine. The game looks gorgeous, the character models were incredibly detailed and the environments were breathtaking. Maybe you need to adjust your settings a bit to find the right match for your system, but I was able to get it looking really beautiful and the frame rate was still very fast. That's the genius part of the id Tech 5 engine, it uses partially resident texture streaming in order to get great framerates with extremely high resolution textures on weaker graphics cards.

TL;DR - The game is a steal at $5, highly recommend picking it up

I just ran it and it runs pretty much 60 FPS, without the detailed textures... Even without that it still looks pretty good, so I think i'll stick with that. It seems like it only affects the textures of the objects close to you, and not the ones further away.

    So far pretty satisfied.

i finished the game with my 7970M a few months back. There were occasional stuttering at first so I have to tone down the settings a bit IIRC.
