I was playing TF2 with taskmanager opened on my second screen and I noticed TF2 is using only maxing out one core why the other kind of just goes up and down randomly but never pass the 50% mark. So does it support Dual Cores properly?
On the same issue, I view one of the post here that help to set up XP to use dual core efficiently. The poster stated that I can check in Add/remove program to see if I had the Hot Fix installed already but when I look, even with the
"show updates" checkbox checked, I still only see one security update, nothing else is being shown. I even redownloaded the hotfix and installed it again and it installed fine. Could this be related to TF2 using only one core?
P.S. CPU is C2D T5470 @1.6 Ghz

Does this game officially state support for dual cores?

Does it not support Dual core by default?
I thought Valve revised the source engine just to add multi-core support to the new games. Anyhow, after some researching, I found the command "mat_queue_mode 2", an unsupported Source console command for multi-core support. When it is enable it does wonders, making the heavy gunfights no less than 20-25 FPS @ 1280 x 1024, 4x AA, 4x AF, and All setting to High, and V-sync Off. BUT it is unsupported by Valve for a reason, it been that enabling this command can cause games to crash occasionally, and can cause random "jitttering". It seems to be that the game crashes or seems to be crashing at points where the CPU was most demanding without the command enable, once enabled it taxes both of my cores to 100% and results in slow response for a brief moment, IE. Long time between loading screen to in-game welcome menu, or just plain game crash. I ran TF2 on Core 2 Duo @ 1.6 and stock 8600m GT. I have to admit the crashes and longer loading times can annoying but it REALLY pays off when everything works out, the game always runs smooth with "decent" FPS most evidence during large gun fire at the beginning of maps.
It is not the only command that enables/off-load the game to 2 cores; however, it is the one that I found most useful. Other commands I have in my config includse:
r_threaded_particles "1
r_threaded_renderables "1"
cl_detaildist "1000"
cl_detailfade "600"
cl_ejectbrass "0"
cl_show_splashes "0"
muzzleflash_light "0"
r_decals "1024"
r_lod "1"
dsp_enhance_stereo "1"
mem_max_heapsize "1024000"
cl_forcepreload "1"
cl_showfps 2
fps_max 62
r_threaded_client_shadow_manager "1"
cl_threaded_bone_setup "1"
cl_threaded_client_leaf_system "1"
P.S. Also one big problem with "mat_queue_mode 2" is that tabbing out of the game, Full screen only, will result in game crashing. It works on some system without issues so try it out and if the FPS gain is justifiable you can keep it, otherwise I would take it off due to the instability. Otherwise, I really hope Valve can expand on this switch and release it with a future patch. -
If an unsupported console command is the only way to enable dual core support then consider it unsupported until Valve figure out a way to make dual core support stable in TF2.

Does it matter? Why would you base your decision on whether to buy a game or not on solely whether it would support dual core CPU's or not. TF2 is still a great game.
