I just downloaded battlefield 2142 off of Origin (I hope this service fails miserably because it sucks and I want to buy BF3 on Steam).
I'm having the same problem with changin the controls that I had with BF 2. I tried setting "forward" to the left mouse button (don't ask, I've been playing this way since I was 13). The second I go change one of the functions on the keyboard (I use F as backwards and center everything around that), it erases the binding I set on the mouse.
This is really ****in obnoxious. Every other game I play, I just press a button and the key re-binds. Is there something I'm doing wrong, or is this just how the re-binding in this game works?

after you log in across the top of the screen there should be tabs for things like multiplayer, singleplayer, etc... There should also be an options tab if I recall correctly and once you click it theres a new set of tabs where you select the controls tab there you can edit them like most other pc games, click the action and press the key you want to assign it to.
Oh sorry I just read the rest of your post, when you assign walk forward or whatever to left mouse click, do you still have fire set to left click also? you may need to clear that action first before you can change it -
go into the config files...

There are demographics to appeal to...left handed...deaf...color-blind...comatose...
I think the line is drawn at people who use left mouse button to forward. -
Seriously?? That is the most backwards controls scheme I have ever heard of. And I thought I was unconventional when I preferred to play with the arrow keys instead of WASD, a.k.a, the old-school way. Then one day I switched to WASD and never looked back.
If you still insist on your crazy controls, go to your Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles\[your current profile] and edit Controls.con. Make it read-only if BF2 messeses it up. -
First off, there are only two profiles: Default and 001. I assume that the 001 is the only profile/soldier that I have on 2142?
Second, when I click on the controls.con file it says that windows can't open. Using the web to find the correct program doesn't seem to work. It also gives me the option to select from a list of installed programs (none of which is bf 2142). Any suggestions?
And yes, My control scheme is quite backwards. Don't know where I learned it but I've been using it since the days of Quake 2. Would love to make the switch to WASD so I don't have to deal with problems like this, but something about holding W while trying to work one of the other keyboard functions drives me up a wall. -
Open the .con file with notepad
Does anybody know how to change the controls in battlefield 2/2142?
