Does anyone know how to fix a "The memory could not be 'read'" error?

Ok, just installed Windows 7. I installed DX9, then I went to try out my games. When I selected EverQuest the game would start up then crash right back to the desktop with the following error: "'The Instruction at 0x####### referenced memory at 0x#######. The memory could not be 'read'"

I have the game data on my other partition, and it is not read-only or anything. The disk was recently defragged, and I'm checking it for errors now (though I doubt it will find any). Any idea what could be causing this? I've heard reports of this with many other games, but I cannot find a good solution.

I have both StationLauncher and Eqgame.exe running in compatibility mode.
