Do you mean this: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 ?

Can the video card even be swapped out???

Whether you can actually upgrade it is questionable. Just be certain that it's possible before you buy a graphics card.

The two options available when the 1720 was new were-

    128mb nVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS
    256mb nVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT

If your 1720 has the Intel GMA X3100, that means it has the Intel GM965 Express Chipset. The nVIDIA graphics cards would need the Intel PM965 Express Chipset instead, I believe...

It depends on the configuration that you initially ordered.

If you ordered it with the x3100 graphic accelerator, then per allfiredup it would be the GM965 Express chipset which will not accept a dedicated graphic card.

If you ordered it with the 8400m GS then yes, the graphic card is upgradable to only 8600m GT (DDR2).
