After finally getting fed up with Far Cry 2 - the mortars in Act 2 were the straw that broke the camel's back - I went back and picked up an old favorite: Mass Effect.

But then, after playing a bit of Mass Effect, I found the urge in the back of my head to go back to Quake 4 growing stronger. It'd been a while since I'd played through it.

I've gotta be honest, I'm not a fan of Quake 4's multiplayer (since it's basically Quake 3 as far as I can tell), but I absolutely love the single player. Did anyone else here really enjoy it? Do you still revisit it from time to time? It's a little archaic looking compared to recent games, but still reasonably attractive and has certainly aged well (being able to run 24xCFAA on my 4870 doesn't hurt).

Of the Doom 3 engine games, it's probably my favorite, with Quake Wars a perilously close second. But I did always love how Doom 3 engine games looked.

I considered ordering that when I did my massive game ordering fest for the W90, but I decided against it. I regret doing so really...it's only $6 on Newegg.

The driving part of Quake 4 was poorly done.

Yeah I have played Quake 4 and I found it better than Doom 3. And as Tinderbox says the driving part and the robot was a bit awkward. Those gigantic spiders were much better than the Brumak of GoW for me. Try to play in the highest difficulty setting and you will be in the middle of some very heavy combat.

I thought i would install it again, but run it it keeps crashing in Vista, but i have run it before on Vista just a different lappy and it was fine.

I wonder if it runs better on Nvidia then Ati , I am using the latests drivers 9.3

I still play Quake 4...I still play Quake 2...I skipped Quake 3 and chose Unreal Tournament...

I still play Doom (and sometimes the Simpsons .wad), Doom 2 and Doom 3...

Of all those, I spend the most time with Quake 4...

And I thought Prey was cool...a lot of people panned it...the gimmicks (look...I'm looking at you looking at me looking at you...and up is down is up is down wasn't that clever...just nauseating...and it had been done before...and the portals were lackluster here though the same idea taken a little further a little later became another hit for Valve...) were just that...gimmicks...but the atmosphere was every bit as intense, if not more than, Doom 3 or Ravenholm in Half-Life 2...and the spirit-walk gimmick was actually cool, in my opinion, and re-spawning made more sense...and one of the most eclectic FPS soundtracks ever...what's not to love?

    Beat it.

The spirit world respawn gimmick pissed me off. Once you get the spirit walk early in the game, it is impossible to lose. Why would I play a game where my performance is totally irrelevant? At least the Vita-Chambers in BioShock made you plod your way back to where you were. Prey just dumps you right back where you died.

And I agree the vehicle sections of Quake 4 were lousy. But the shooter sections of the - you know - shooter, those are a blast.
