So I sold my PS3 recently as the vast majority of my gaming has been done on PC. I've been using a wired Xbox 360 controller to play games such as Skyrim, Need for Speed Hot Pursuit, and NBA 2K13. Basically, any game that supports an Xbox 360 controller. I was wondering if perhaps there was a more optimal controller for PC gaming? Preferably wireless since I'm tired of this dreaded cord becoming tangled.

TL;DR: What controller would you recommend for gaming on a PC?

I use a wired Xbox 360 controller as well and it works great, though with some games it`s quicker to aim with a mouse.

The cord is a pain, but wirless is a waste when i am sitting at my notebook anyway.

Same here. Only for Shooters I use the Keyboard and Mouse because of the much better control.

The wired Xbox 360 controller offers the best compatability thanks to XInput, and the wireless works just as well once you buy the adapter needed.
Logitech also makes a PC controller that works the same way but it looks similar to the PS3 controller, just with better shoulder triggers.

I use a wired 360 controller all the time if it works well with the game. More and more do lately. Its just more comfortable sitting on the couch with my lap desk using a controller. I use a mouse if it makes sense, but I tend not to play fps online in hardcore competition mentality much anymore so a controller tends to be great for most uses. The last two games I used my mouse for were DayZ and my run through normal on Diablo III and some path of exile, and a few older games. Just about every other game I've played lately the controller is more comfortable. (Fallout 3, new Vegas, skyrim, crysis 2, borderlands, darksiders, Max Payne 3, rage, and other s...)

I keep intending on buying an Xbox 360 controller for games like Batman: Arkham Asylum and Kingdoms of Amalur--adventure games which really don't lend themselves as well to mouse and keyboard.

I use a PS3 controller. KB/Mouse only for shooters or anything in first person.

PS: Is NBA 2K13 good on PC?

Amazing. I've been playing it non-stop ever since I got it. Of course there will be those who rate the game negatively and positively but for me, the game is truly amazing and I'll be playing it for a long time.

Wired Xbox controller too. Since all the games I use it for are Xbox ports it's the best option, you could buy the wireless one if you can't handle your wires.

I use my ps3 controller on some games. All my 360 controllers are wireless so I cant use them. I mainly use the ps3 controller for Dark Souls Prepare to Die Edition because I'm used to playing Dark Souls on my ps3. I use the motioninjoy controller emulator, it's really easy. My laptop just reads the controller as if it's a 360 controller. Handy if you have a ps3 controller, because they all come with a usb charging cord you can use to hook it up to the pc.

yeah, i know. i used to play on Xbox360 and got used to the controller, then bought Battlefield 3 for the PC but hated using the keyboard, so i'm using the controller (basically the left side of the controller) with my left hand to run around the map, throw grenades, and zoom with the gun and stuff, then use the mouse with my right hand for fine tuning and firing and knifing (which i've mapped to the right button). it works :)

I've got a wired 360 pad for some games (3rd person, arcade racers). Usually I'll just stick to KB/M for fps' and a G27 for racing.

lol I totally understand having troublee with the keyboard, I'm still trying to get the hang of it after gaming exclusively on consoles for at least a decade. Last game I played on pc before getting my laptop was gta3 lol. I might actually like the setup you're using. I'll try it out. One thing I hated about playing BF3 single player with a controller was the quicktime events could only be performed with the keyboard. Hated switching like that, especially when my laptop was closed bc I was playing on my flatscreen.

I wasn't planning on getting a controller. But after 10 minutes of trying to get used to Fifa 13 using a new mouse control system, I ordered a 360 controller.

Years and years ago I used to play it on pc (the last one I owned was 06) and struggled on friends consoles. Since then I guess I got used to controllers. But the new mouse controls are not fun

I agree with those of you saying that using a mouse/keyboard for games that are just forwarded to the PC from consoles is uncomfortable which is why using a controller can sometimes be a necessity depending on the game. On that note, would you guys recommend a wireless or wired controller? I'm not using a flat screen or external monitor, rather just my laptop screen.

I'm in the same situation exactly, word for word.

Which is funny, because I hate playing on the consoles. But playing PC games with a wired XBOX 360 controller (I hated replacing batteries for my wireless controllers) gives the best of both of worlds. I just like the controlle's rumbles during gameplay, it reallys improves the whole immersion from the game - swinging a two handed sword in Skyrim, connecting and going to kill-cam as my character skewers her hapless victim on her blade while the controller rumbles on every hit is pure joy for me. It's also quite fun having it rumble when I spray bullets in Borderlands 2, really helps the feeling I'm actually shooting an automatic weapon. It's nowhere near as precise and effective as playing with a mouse and a keyboard, but if we're talking about entertainment value, it's one of the best purchases I made in the past year.

I see I am not alone! I come from a pedigree where I was the first of my Saturday night doom fest buddies to start circle strafing with the mouse back in the early-mid 90's (and consequently they all had to follow or get stomped badly) So I am no stranger to the span of time I was in the camp where I wouldn't even consider anything else. I'm just in a different place now. I am old. I want to sit on the couch. The controller is just more comfortable with no loss of gameplay enjoyment. Its just the right choice for me if the option is available.

I bought this wireless controller to try with the racing mini-game in RAGE. It worked great and was very convenient, however, I just don't have the same finger/wrist muscles I used to have when I was a kid playing Super Mario Bros all night back in the 1980s.

My hands start cramping after using any controller more than 20-30 minutes and I have to go back to using my trusty combination of Nostromo plus wireless trackball mouse.
