Hi all! 1st post here so please bear with me if i err. i am considering a Dell studio xps 16 with ati hd 3670 graphics here in India. i was wondering whether the card has ddr2 or gddr3 ram (vram?), so i contacted Dell support in India. well, the rep i spoke to told me the card was a gddr3 one based on the fact that the system ram is ddr3. his explanation was that since the system ram is ddr3, the graphics card will necessarily have to be a gddr3 version. is this true? i am a bit skeptical of his reasoning. hope someone can shed some light on this. Thanks a ton!

no. dedicated GPUs have their own (dedicated
) VRAM, which can be either DDR2 or DDR3 (or DDR5, on newer desktop cards).
-
Thanks for the quick reply. so how do i find out whether the card in question has ddr2 or gddr3 vram
-
Use GPU-Z.
-
Uh well i am still considering purchasing it. haven't yet got my hands on it. so cant test it with GPU-Z

The Studio XPS 16 uses DDR3 system memory and GDDR3 video card memory. The two are NOT related at all.

@OP: See if anyone with that laptop chirps up and tells you
Otherwise you can do some research of your own, try Google
EDIT: Didn't get to read previous post. -
Thanks sgogeta4. could you pls cite your source. dont mean to be rude, just curious.
-
@Manic Penguins, tried googling but haven't come up with anything yet. the card does not seem to be too common when it comes to laptops

Video cards have their own memory can be DDR2 GDDR3,4 or even 5. System memory is most certainly separate. That laptop has DDR3 memory chips

Thanks King of Interns. the problem is there could be a difference in the card being provided in India, and the one available elsewhere. hence i would appreciate if i could get the source of the information, so i could probably take it from there.

Well according to www.notebookcheck.com that card comes with DDR2,3 and 4. So there is all the possibility of its coming with GDDR 3. Check dell's website and search for your laptop it may say. Or do as recommeded and check the forum for the DELL studio 16 owners thread. People there will tell you.

Heres hoping theres a studio 16 thread soon. thanks 4 all ur help. really appreciate it.
Does ddr3 system ram necessarily imply gddr3 graphic card?
