Does the 8400M GS consume the same power as the 8600 GT graphics card as I want a graphics card that consumes a low amount of pwer but still packs a punch.

    Thx for ur time

Nope. I think 8600M GT consumes more power when compared to 8400GS. If you want a card that consumes a low amount of power but still want a punch...try the 8400M GT. Its between the 8400GS and 8600 GS

I'd agree with Age of wind. The 8400 uses half the number of stream processors (16vs32) as an 8600GT. It should only need about 50-60% of the power that an 8600GT uses.

EDIT: Then again, running in idle, power save mode, both modules would probably only use a fraction of their load power percentage. In other words, we're talking about power requirements running the GPUs at load (I.E. while playing a game). Both should have very small idle wattage requirements. Keyword being should.

I believe the 8400mGS will still have a lower idle wattage requirement, due to the fact that it has half the memory bus width. Even if the processors aren't engaged, Vista's still going to be caching things in the VRAM so the memory bus width still should come into play.
