I can't believe Dawn Of War 2 is pretty much unplayable because I dont have an internet connection for it.
Ordered the game it arrives and I go to install it only to be confronted with about 6 freakin setup steps just to even get to play the darn game.

Windows Live account(Why do I need to have Microsoft crappy program to play the game???)
Install Steam(Im so sick of this crap)

And all this other online BS you gotta do just to play single player games.

Are there any companies who still make great single player games who are considerate enough not to implement all this internet connection steam must haves hassle into installing thier games???

Yeah, wait until a mod is made to take away the need for a Windows Live login (a few games, fallout 3 and the like, have such a mod). Steam you shouldn't need to do more than initial authentication.

They want the windows live because they are trying to integrate the xbox console gamers with the pc gamers. This way there will be a more uniform user base.

Well then quit buying games like this, any game with unnacceptable copy protection methods, or DRM, or install methods, just don't buy it. Rather, support the game companies that AREN'T using these methods. If everyone refuses to buy games with these DRM methods, they will be forced to either quit making money, or remove them. Their stock value would fall, and they would be FORCED to remove the DRM method, or change it to one people will accept. Same to those who don't like steam, if no one bought games on steam, or barely anyone did, games wouldn't require it like they do now.

correct me if i'm wrong , but don't both GFWL and STEAM have offline modes? you just have to connect to internet when you first install the game in order to activate the copy

Stardock games aren't too bad in this respect, unfortunately you still need an internet connection to keep the games up to date and for registration.

Hey, it's only going to get worse, although maybe publishers will get smart and develop DRM schemes that don't anger their paying customers. I remain skeptical.

same here. i like my game to be able to manage itself within, nice and clean. bad enough that it requires the end users to deal with these "frontends", the extra craps now suck up system resource and memory.

i am a fan of the original dow. but the fact that dow2 is relying on third parties frontends (not one, but two - steam and windows live) to manage the online portion really show how pathetic developers are these days ...

Yeah, I'm sure you're right about that.

Although, I remember when my Brother got the Orange Box and it used Steam, it took him FOREVER just to be able to play it. Even though he just needs to do whatever it is Steam does, on a dial up connection it sucks!

    Thanks man!! Go Wings! :D

I was originally skeptical about steam until I got a freee copy of Half life 2 and realised it wasn't all that bad. I have gone on to buy the orange box and left 4 dead and it is looking increasingly likely I'll get Empire: total war through steam as well. I hate securom and I'll buy the games through steam if I really want it in the hope that I can avoid it.

Steam works just fine. All you really need is a one-time connection for the initial activation, then you can play offline all you want.

Like many people have pointed out, there's nothing wrong with Steam. Sure it may use some computer resources but it does have its benefits like easy patching of games and easy multiplayer, plus being able to make friends across games. Internet connection is needed initially then you can run steam offline from then on.

Windows Live Account is unfortunate but its just an online account. Make it then forget about it. Its NOT a program.

Too bad you cant go back to the store and return it. They will yell "LIAR! You stealed the serial code!!" at you and then punch you in the face.

I paid for Left 4 Dead but can't play it at school because steam needs to go through the internet to get to work offline mode.

I hate it when this happens. Especially when it's the 17 year old girl at the customer service desk - she then proceeds to beat me until I run out of the store crying...

...oh, sorry, what was the question?

Agreed. The best games would be bundled, and people do not really a choice because they want to play the game.

Most games will come out with some form of DRM whether you like it or not.
Steam is less intrusive than most and does give benefits as well(buying games, friends list, easy updating, can delete games and redownload them anytime you like)
thats why I like it. I have no problem with steam and I love it but that is a personal opinion. Why not support your favourite DRM? this will let developers know that we're fed up of EA style DRM!

I highly disagree with that. I think that steam is the most intrusive form of DRM out there. The only thing that is worse than steam, is DRM with install limits, and even that is slightly more manageable because you can reset them most of the time.

I would gladly buy games with SecuRom over steam as long as they don't have install limits, or require online checks. At least with disk protection methods rather than online methods, when I'm done with the game I can loan it out. Or play it on two of my own PC's at the same time if someone wants to play a LAN but can't afford to buy the game, or doesn't own a gaming PC.

So instead of Internet verification, via online, people would rather have spyware like Starforce installed on their machine ?

Maybe if there weren't so many thieves in the world, game-makers wouldn't feel the need to protect their products w/ online authentication and DRM !

If you want to blame someone, blame Digital-Thieves !

No, he's saying that he hates software pirates, because they're the reason we have such absurd countermeasures forced upon us, like SecuROM and Starforce.

The worst part is, these things are a huge annoyance to legitimate consumers, and yet they don't really stop piracy at all. Heavily protected games are still cracked, often within hours of release, and uploaded to torrent sites anyway.

I just try buy games with little to no DRM, go buy Sins of a Solar Empire.
Amazing RTS game in space... really amazing and it has absolutely 0 DRM!!!

I find encouraging those developers who use no DRM works better than winging about those who do.
I avoid almost all EA games because of their DRM
