What exactly is Doom 3? Everyone's always talking about F.E.A.R and other games, but never Doom 3. Well I've heard from other sources that Doom 3 is a very intense and graphically superior game. I'm thinking of getting it, however I would like to know if my specs listed below in my signature could run it efficiently, and if it is truly a great game. Also, I'd like to know if it will really scare the hell out of me

doom 3 is more of an old school shooter, it plays like the original doom. liniar levels, only shooting. its scary, but more in a survival/ things jump out at you scary then pcycological like in fear, i deffinantly jumped quite a few times during the game. its a pretty fun one, but i dont consider it a "great game". its dynamics aren't anything special, and most of the wepons have been fully explored in other games. i wouldn't pay 50 bucks for it, but 20-30 is about right. your system would handel it no problem. its worth playing in my opinoin.

You could play it at that resoultion most then likely. They optimized the system a bit after it's release. Remember that the game came out around the same time as HL2, so 2004ish. 2-3 years is a long time in the world of gaming and computer hardware.

The game itself is decent. Very linear in game play, most of the weapons are very normal, you have a flashlight though....It's scary if you start playing at like 12am with no lights on and you get freaked out at things jumping at you.

    FEAR is great too.

    probably 1280x800 - 1440x900 for that game.

So, looking at my laptop specs in my sig, if i prefer to stay at my native 1920 x 1200 res, will the frame rates be playable for FEAR?

Doom3 is not a very demanding game, even a Ti4600 (you know Geforce 4) can run it pretty well. FEAR is a far more graphically intense game than Doom3.
Your computer will handle doom3 easily

no definitely not, unless you plan to turn down alot of settings.
    desktop 8600GT(basically a 8700M) gets 55fps on 1024*724 with everything maxed, and 34fps on 1280*1024, probably 20s in 1440, and 10s on 1920*1200.

but who knows might have playable fps if you turn down alot of settings.

And if I turn down from my native res to say, 1440 x 900, will it have better frame rates?

like i said the above fps i posted was for a much faster clocked desktop 8600GT at max setting.

you can easily turn down alot of settings and not notice any difference, i'm sure 1440*900 can be playable at medim/high

Going back to Doom 3, if its graphics are truly amazing, then why aren't its hardware requirements substantial?

Rainbow Six Las Vegas is pretty good, works pretty good on 8600GT series.
Stalker is pretty good, but the 8600GT series can't use dynamic lighting.

Half life 2 and sequels, but you might want to wait for the Orange Box for that. And like the poster above me said, R6 Vegas is pretty good and runs very decent on an 8600GT. GRAW2 unfortunately does not. I haven't tried Prey but it got some good reviews and uses the D3 engine so it should run fine. Oh and Stalker is a pretty good game that runs decently as well.

funny you ask about this game. I just installed it now on my D900C and when i saw that it wasnt running full speed on max max settings i almost flipped....re-installed ngo drivers and restarted computer,...now it runs like a charm...soo wierd. But yea doom 3 was fun and it still is in small doses.

What IS Doom 3? o.0 You can't have NOT heard about the Doom games, can you?

Yeah. Doom 3 makes you jump and gets you really nervous whilst you're playing it, but I don't think it's the sort that lingers with you afterwards.

I have an Asus G1S with the 8600M GT card, and I play Doom maxed out at my laptops native res of 1680x1050 (or as close to that as Doom gets) and it's nice and smooth throughout. F.E.A.R I play at the same res, and everything ip to max except for a few settings like AA, volumetric lighting and soft shadows. I should probably turn it down a little more as it occasionally stops for a second when saving, but otherwise it's smooth too.

Doom 3 is one of those games like Far Cry or, supposedly, the upcoming Crysis, in that it looks terrific and was designed to run on lower hardware specs than many comparable games released at the same time. Despite that, the settings of all these games can be turned up high enough to challenge the best video cards available at the time. I think the Half Life games are the same, however I can't say that for sure since I don't have any of them.

F.E.A.R is the best one I know of at the moment, and Far Cry and Doom 3 are worth thinking of as slightly older (but terrific) games that your machine will play on the highest settings.

I'd say Doom 3 was the first shooter of the new generation, respect to realism.

it was definitely the first game to make use of the doom 3 engine, tech 4 i believe?

it was certainly a graphical leap ahead of everything behind it, and it still looks good today.

That was my first thought too! *Incredulous* Doom back in the day was a w e s o m e!

Very different games, just like with Doom you must have heard about the R6 series. R6 is more down to earth and alledges to strive for realism. It is also a quite tactical game where you have a team to command, no solo shotgun here!

I heard Vegas doesn't run well on the 8600M GT. Anyone?

What is a really immersive shooter? HL2, Doom3 and F.E.A.R don't do it for me, linear levels, bah! Gonna try ArmA but how are the levels, gameplay and realism in Prey, Stalker or FarCry? Thank

vegas doesn't run well on anything. its a really bad port.

even in 640x480 its just not smooth...

however, that opinion was pre 1.05 patch. the new patch made the game run much better overall and you can finally at least use 16:9 widescreen resolutions. (not perfect, but at least they are thinking about it)
