In October I plan on getting a new laptop with my Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend. As anyone who lives in Alaska knows, you can't count on how much it will be until the last week of September. (Hopefully it will hold around last years $1150 or go up since it has been going down over the past few years). What I want to know is if Doom 3 will run smoothly, on the lowest settings with shadows ON, even if I have to overclock a little bit (yes I know what I'm doing), on the following set-up which I have deemed the slowest acceptable configuration of an HP Compaq Presario R3000Z.
AMD Athlon XP-M 2800+
512 MB RAM
64 MB Geforce 4 440 Go
If I don't get enough to buy this machine I'm just going to have to sit on my money until I can afford it. This configuration costs $980
PS I would also like to know if FarCry would be able to run on this even if it isn't pretty. I've never had the money to do more then buy either the cheapest current generation graphics or the last generation graphics cards for my pc so living with low graphics settings and low resolutions is normal for me.
PPS If you saw my previous posting asking about a good laptop that I could order from a place that accepts check or money order I'm not getting this from HPshopping, I'm getting it from www.computers4sure.com It's a subsidiary of Office Depot so they should be a reliable company and you can order custom hp/compaq computers from them.[8D]

I had this machine for a month and it did play far cry but it wasen't that great. It was on low settings Doom 3 on the other hand is even harder to run, I would think it would run but I don't know if its playable. I'd also like to add I loved that computer but I returned it after 28 days because of the video card. I now have a zx5000/R3000T with a Radeon 9600 128MB video card much better!

I hate to be a pessimist but you'll be lucky to run Doom 3 with that configuration. You need a 128 mb video card to make Doom 3 reasonably playable. Its as simple as that. The 512 mb of ram is acceptable but if you can afford to, I would upgrade.

Thanks for the advice. I'm probably going to stick getting UT2K4 and the Hordes of the Underdark expansion for Neverwinter Nights (I already have the original game and shadows of undrentide expansion). Thanks for the advice

I played unreal 04 on that system and it was ok. You have to turn things down but it's not that bad. I definitly like it a lot more on this system though things turned all the way up!
