Which one is better, and why?
-
-
dIII is way way to dark
-
Single player shooter with lots of ugly monsters in a dark environment compared to a multiplayer friendly shooter in brighter environments and a faster pace.
It really depends on the player. I don't own either and don't care to but if FPS floats your boat try the demos and see. -
Voted Quake 4. It's not that I think Q4 is a great game, just that I thought Doom 3 was a terrible one. Too dark, too repetitive, and simply not fun.
-
doom 3. it's just funner
-
So far we have a tie!
-
Quake IV had that one scene were you get turned into a Skrogg or whatever. Both games were kind of meh, but I enjoyed Q4 more.
-
Quake 4. Doom 3 was good for the like first hour, but running around in the pitch black and constantly be bombarded by monsters that jump out at you gets old.
-
And the tables have turned, with Quake IV in the lead!

I like them both, but I do agree Doom 3 is a bad game.
I think Quake 4's single player campaign is really underrated, though. Apart from the vehicle parts, there's a lot to love, and visually it's more appealing than Doom 3 is.
My vote is Quake 4. -
I think the poll lacks of the option :None of them...
Doom 3 and Quake 4 are a perfect example of graphics witouth anything else...do you want freedom or environment interaction?you have only one directions and you can't miss the exit cause it's straight ahead of you or phisics are terrible and fun is similar to play a Space Invaders game...i finished Doom 3 for inertia...Quake 4 after 5 levels make ma yawn and it's still unfinished under a pile of dust (little better than doom 3 but a poor gameplay in 2005 it's unacceptable)
The impact of your shots on your targets is ridiculous...seems they drop down as pins after a strike...
And it's very funny/unaccetaple in a 2005 game that dead enemies disappear in a green/red smoke(Note that color of the smoke change Quake 4 green,Doom 3 red!WOW)damn the good of doom was being attacked by thousand monsters in a arena and surviving to admire your massacre!
F.e.a.r. is the worst nightmare of john carmack... -
Thanks for your input. So for this type of game you are recommending FEAR instead?
-
FEAR >> Doom 3 + Quake 4. -
Fear is outstanding for shots impacts and different reactions of enemies, and the AI is superb, they seems real humans, they divide themselves in squads and talk each other signaling each one your position, the feeling is that you are not in a game but in a movie cause often when they spot you one squad shoots to you covered and another moves silently beneath you!!!and phisics and lights...forget those crappy full open-gl shadows of id games in fear shadows are soft and all lights are dinamycally generated. And i can talk about story...it's very frustrating to use the same old marine with steroids that must save Mars from the aliens...i dont'mention fear story because you must play it i'll tell you that is like being in a movie...
Simply you can live witouth playing doom3,quake4 but if you are a REAL fps gamer you can't be amused by the details and the amazing action of FEAR
Go buy now and forget those two ! -
I enjoyed both games, but Doom 3 at least has atmosphere. It really was extremely impressive when it came out. Quake IV is good, but it's just underwhelming in comparison, really.
-
I'm so dissapointed with ID software. They used to be the kings, with the original Doom and the original Quake. Now their releases seem to be just "meh".
Don't get me wrong, D3 and Q4 are great games, but I think everyone expected ID software to release something revolutionary, rather than the old tired FPS formula of the monster closet.
Doom 3 did have good atmosphere though. -
DooM III DEFINATELY, back a few years ago the game was great, NO i wasn't tired of the old FPS formula, it worked great, and everyone loved it. There were mods that made the game FULLY online COOP too, with monsters that have double HP to make it still challenging. The first time I beat DOOM3 was with someone else in CooP, and it was increadibly fun.
But quake 4 just had an all around fun story. I don't recall any other games letting you watch yourself in first person getting ripped to pieces and chopped up, then turned into a strogg.
FEAR was great, but doesn't fit with either of these, FEAR is just too different, it's a great game, but was just as, or more linear than even DOOM3, which atleast had interesting puzzles though out, unlike FEAR. -
doom 3 got pretty boring .
-
unknown555525 the strogg transformation it's a crap!your fantastic super-powers are more attacking power and speed and that you can read the alien writings in english...Amazing powers! very useful
Is this a great innovation?sure other games don't use an idiot transformation like this -
I just bought Quake 4 and FEAR last week 'cause they're cheap now, and I must say that was a bad combination as FEAR blows Quake 4 out of the water.
Quake 4's graphics were good (well, excepting the caracter's facial animations) but that's pretty much all it's got going for it. The AI is predictable etc. and the vehicle sections are awful. It's good for some very simple shooting, but not much else...I did enjoy it, but comparing it to other FPS around that age (Half Life 2, FEAR) it's bland.
I didn't like what I've seen of Doom 3. It's like Quake 4, except...poorly lit.
Fear on the other hand is spectacular. The gunfights look amazing, the weapins are meaty and the slow-mo skills are cool but the environments are monotonous. Oh well, you can't have everything. -
I don't understand what FEAR is about. What is the premise of the game, military missions, campaigns, or what?
-
Single player missions linked by the main story.
If you've seen The Ring you could have a "LITTLE" deja-vu
Download the demo and see if you like it

I would if I could, but I don't have my game capable system yet!
-
doom 3 ftw
-
doom 3 is basically a tech demo from id software to promote their new gaming engine, which, by the way, is what id have been doing since quake 1, and how they pay for their porches, ferraris, lamborginis, etc.
quake 4 is developed by one of their game engine licensee, and where you get REAL gaming content. -
Ok,simply put:
half life2 > fear > doom 3> quake 4.
Q4 was of the utmost boring shoot first, shoot later kind of game.
D3 was shoot first, run later , and highly repetitive.
Fear was run first, shoot later kind of game, but definitely a fun thing. Horror at its best
HL2 - gameplay, story, grphics, lower system requirements compared to other games, hell yeah, the crowbar king makes the whole difference
And if you ask me, try Call of Juarez -
I have officially added FEAR to my "must buy" list!
-
And one more thing. Crysis is a must. Helluva game and graphics, its amazing. But it will surgicallycut your GPU in two, even an 8800GTX has problems running it at maximum.
Still love it though,on medium it's beautiful. -
Everyone is pretty much raving about that game, but the sys requirements have scared me away.
