You need newer drivers -- the one you've got doesn't appear to support OpenGL correctly. I've got a 8600 gt, and Doom3 and Quake4 both work work superbly.
See the sticky in this forum about how to upgrade drivers.

Download the latest drivers from nvidia.com and install.

FWIW, I have an 8600m GS and Doom3 is not very playable at high resolutions. Only 12 - 15 FPS at 1680x1050. A slideshow, really. Drop your res to 840x525 and it's much smoother.

How can doom 3 run superbly on the 8600M GT
at high resolutions, but run so crappy at high resolutions
on the 8600M GS, whats the big difference between
    these two cards?

I'm sorry to bring up an old topic but this comment is absolute CRAP. I to have a 8600gs and it runs doom 3 fine at ultra high settings running good just a little below my native resolution (1680x1050).

Either your drivers are out of date or your GPU is not functioning correctly as it should but, please cease the nonsense.

The 8600gt is slighty faster and better. I have a friend with the GT and its noticeably faster, but not by leaps either. Update your drivers as I'm told this will give better performance. Doom 3 runs fine on the 8600gs.
