I have an emachines m6805, which has a 64mb ati radeon 9600, 512 RAM, 60 G, and 3000+ amd athlon proc. I just recently bought Doom 3 and i have the graphics the recommended and it crashes.....alot. I turned the graphics all the way down and it stills crashes. Daaaamn. What do everyone think? Is it the RAM, graphics card, or Doom 3 just needs a patch?

From the looks of it, I would say patch, but I dont know for sure.

try updateing the Video Drivers to the latest Omega's or Mod the ATI drivers, and turn the settings down see if that helps.
-
do you have directx9 loaded?
-
i have directx9, but i havent updated the video drivers. Maybe that is it. I turned the settings all the way down, so thats not it.
-
Make sure it is DirectX9b.
Also, most game developers state that laptop cards are not supported. -
I would try downloading the latest omega drivers, that has helped me before on games that didn't work...

You may also want to check out one of the many reviews now out there floating around about Doom3 and compatibility issues with systems. Every review I've read said that the game is playable with as old of a desktop gpu as an ati9200. Granted its choppy, but the general concensus seems to be that low res (680) doesnt deter from the game because it was done so well. try out anandtech.com for starters there is two separate articles dealing with minimum cpu and gpu needed to play Doom3.

When developers state that laptop graphics are not supported they are in no way talking about your higher end, non integrated, graphics. The higher end ati and nvidia cards share way to many features and similar driver support for there to be an issue. In addition I know several people rocking ati9700 cards in their laptops and playing it at 1024 with pretty high settings. I believe they all have 128mb dedicated ram. Sounds like you could use a driver update.

GOOD NEWS> hey, thanks guys, it was the driver. It works great now. The game is amazing.
-
Glad you got it working, mine was locking up too at the reception (first cut scene) until I installed the omega drivers. Now I'm 6hrs or so in and no problems [

Your confusing what "not supported" actually means, they are not referring to gpu's such as the mobility 9700 which is essentially the same as the 9600xt, what exactly about the card do you assume isn't supported? Game developers dont create games with separate engines for each individual card thus making the cards "supported", they create or use an engine that each individual card can handle or not. And also like i said it ended up being the driver, dont be such a sour puss[
