Anyone still play DotA Allstars? Looking at trying it out.
How much would it cost to get Warcraft so I could play it?
Thanks

I think you can get the full Warcraft 3 battlechest for like 29.99 or just buy the games on Blizzard's online service.
DotA is a custom map for Warcraft 3: Frozen Throne, for those that don't know. It is wildly popular, highly competitive, and quite time consuming. It essentially spawned a subgenre of fast RPG competitive gaming.
I find the players to be EXTREMELY offensive and highly intolerant of new players. In other words, expect to be screamed at, insulted, and treated like crap while learning to play. The primary audience for the game is preteen/teen (though older teenagers and some college students play), so that partially explains the level of bile flowing through the matches.
Even considering the large number of jerks, the game itself can be quite addictive. There are at least a few nice players out there. Also, there are MANY people who still play DotA and it has been continually updated since its inception. -
Mind you that DOTA isn't the only good custom game for Warcraft III. I still play custom games a lot, and there are quite a few good ones. Footmen Frenzy, Island Defense (my favorite), Line Tower Wars (my other favorite), Wintermaul Wars (my other other favorite)... the list goes on. If you are going to purchase the game (I lost my cd keys a bunch, so I ended up buying the battlechest 3 times, jeese), look into trying the other custom games as well. You never know what they are until you try them.
As for playing Dota, try to start out by going on Dota-allstars.com and looking up strategies for how to play the heroes, and other basic things.
Download the AI map first, and play that until you get the hang of the basics. As StormEffect said, the players are jerks, so you need to get your game up before you play with the big boys. Before every match I play, I go to the hero strategy section of dota-allstars.com to find the hero builds (what items to get and at which levels to pick certain skills). Once you play a lot you'll get the basic idea for good hero builds.
Once you feel like you get the gist of the game, you can probably take it online. Look for noob games first, or host one yourself. While a few pros might get in and wreak havoc, in general, noob games are the best place to learn the game. In noob games usually you will have people to help you out and lend their advice.
Then you just work your way up. At first I hated dota because I always got crushed. But then I started playing noob games and ai maps and I got strategies, and now I can play in normal games.
Another tip: make sure you understand all the different gametypes. When people make the dota games, the title of the games are usually 'DOTA .69 -AREM' or 'DOTA .69 -APEM'. There's a different between apem and arem. Look at the in game help for more details, or I'm sure there is a dota resource to help you out.
Edit: In other words, yes, you should try dota out. It's fun. -
csinth, you need to set up a Blizzard Account so you can register your cd keys with them. Once they are registered it works like Steam. As long as you know your account login information, you will always have access to your keys and will be able to download any game you have registered straight from Blizzard.

DoTA sucks.
Go for Mini tank wars, shopping maul, rabbits vs sheep, the two towns, hero line wars, stronghold, enfos team survival, angel arena X, and countless other maps.
The DoTA community is full of arrogant idiots who wont let you join the game if you aren't within the region and will remake the game and banlist you if you choose a poopy hero or die within the first 1 minute.
It's just... Weird and unruly. -
I think dota is great, although it's true that there are those who are arrogant. However, if you buy WC3 you get to play all those custom games that other people mentioned, as well as just plain old regular wc3 which is a really good game within itself. Just make sure that you tell your teammates that you're a beginner or get your friend to host for you so that your teammates won't get too angry..
The other custom games are pretty good, but they aren't nearly as developed and balanced, although I won't deny that the games are still fun, but it's just that dota has such a huge community and it's been out for so long and updated so many times. -
Heh. I <3 DotA. Everyone plays DotA over here in Singapore; it's practically a national pasttime. But yeah, expect to be screamed at if you're new to the game...
-
DotA is a really fun game if you ask me -- testament to that is that I've been playing since the Euls versions for RoC. It's not the only good custom game out there tho, and for $30, warcraft battlechest is a steal IMO. If you're new to playing though, don't be afraid to ask for help from the other players. Although there's likely to be a few snobbish idiots who will just scream at you, it's more than likely that at least one person on your team will take the time to show you the basics-- I know I do when somebody asks in my games.
-
Before playing Dota be sure you just understand the basics of using heroes in warcraft and that you understand item bulds and studd like that. Dotastrategy.com is a good site to learn things. it has a forum so you could ask for people to explain the basics.
-
Not to mention, IMO until Starcraft 2, Warcraft III is the best RTS out there. Learning to play solo on the battle.net ladder, though maybe more challenging than DotA, is also more rewarding and more fun. So if you're going to practically steal the game for $30, try that out too!

In the last few months I've tried my hand at DOTA, and as others say its a lot of fun but it does have a bit of an elite-ist community so beware. Its a surprisingly deep mod and due to the 90+ different characters which each have different strategies its good for hours of fun.
EDIT: a good place to look at is the forum of http://www.dota-allstars.com/, which has a lot of tips for beginners and has guides for virtually every hero. -

I used to play but now im sandbox so connection is not so good.
btw I ran dota on intel 1.7ghz(single core) with 1gig of memory with 17inch native resolution(broke down) smooth in windows XP(intel 950gp)
But when I tried to run on my vaio core 2 1.5ghz with 2gig memory 15.4 native resolution, I get worse frame rate than my old machine - which is running Vista(X3100) Impossible to play
gotta hate vista -
The first thing you sould so is rush the enemy base and try to take on 5 guys at once and die.
They will surly end the game. -
Whenever I hear DotA I think of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OzWIFX8M-Y

Just... wow... -

Basshunter rocks.
Welcome.. To rainbow. -
Best thing is to find a local dota club at your local lan cafe and learn how to play with them. better still if you have friends who already play dota. Don't jump into a battlenet game at random.
www.dota-allstars.com is the place to go. It's the official forums for dota. Icefrog (god) himself haunts those forums. -
Did you really just call a gamer "God". Man... that's lame.
Idolizing a gamer...? -
Icefrog is the current main developer of the DoTA series. Though calling him "God" is going a bit overboard, but he definitely has a special place in the gamer community
-
No doubt, but "God"?
-
Chill... It's just a joke also going on at the dota forums.
-
Chill? That's a big pet-peeve of mine, and thankfully I hadn't heard someone say it on this board until now. This is an internet forum. There is no need to "chill".
-
-
Exactly. I get annoyed when people say "chill" on the internet. Trust me, if I was upset, or angry, I wouldn't be typing on a computer.
-
Icefrog is a God in the christian sense.

Ahh dota. This isn't popular in US but in Asia practically almost any gamer plays dota. I play with my friends every night using Garena. For me it's ok for beginners to join the game as long as the newbie isn't arrogant and doesn't trash talk. And don't hesitate to ask questions from your teammates if you don't know something. You'll improve faster that way.
One easy way to learn is play with your friends first and fight computer AI. Don't choose easy, always choose normal and above difficulty. -
-
Although I havent played DOTA in years, im surprised to hear Icefrog is still running it. That is dedication! I remember when he hung out in one of the 3 dota channels and talked to everyone. I bet there is way more than 3 channels now
-
Really? I only know few people in US who knows or plays dota. Most of them play mmorpgs or fps.
And you are right that this is one of the games worth playing since this involves more of brains and skills than godly equips. -
My favored mode is -sd, single draft, choose 1 out of 3.. and then -ar -
I'm more an -ardm man, myself.
-
Too many em games on bnet. You go to a non-em game, deny a couple waves of creep, kill him once and he leaves... psh.
-
while u are learning u will get yelled a lot, but after that it rocks
I only stopped playing dota when I got into WOW -
Well it looks like I'm kinda reviving this thread... I just searched for DotA and came up with this
