Hey guys i notice that people asked this question before but noone really answered, so i'm asking here. I've got a 8600m GT, yea i overclocked it. I'm using 180.70 Dox driver. I disabled Powermizer in hopes that the GPU doesn't downclock, but it still does. I check the temp using Rivatuner, and the highest temp i ever reached was 77C. Now i know that 77 is a far cry from overheating, yet the GPU still downclocks at random times during gaming, sometimes 15 mins, sometimes an hour later. This happens with other drivers as well. So, whats up with that?

At 77c I think he is okay :). Nvidia cards can stand up to 100c temperatures but they down throttle around 90c. If the card was damaged it wouldn't work at all or it would artifact.
@op The 8600gt is notorious for it's downclocking issue look around the nbr and lv2go forums and you will see many people with the same issue.

Got it fixed. And dox dont scare him like that lol :-]

My card only goes up to 69C max lol. SO im most definitely in the safe zone.

I just amped it to 650 950 1500 and i get no downclocking.

    Gotta love this marble desk.

    I use Powermizer switch app

Cmon, like i said, 77C is a far cry from frying. Besides, I never experienced any artifacts whatsoever, just downclocking.

    How'd you fix it?

    yes 77 is not bad,
but the thing with nvidia cards is that it has very sensitive "throttle" point, i dont mean throttle point to do with temps.

If you are not experience with overclocking (I am not saying your are not).
you can actually get no performance gain after a certain point. let me explain.

Say you raised the core/mem/shader up 5mhz a time and run 3D mark 06, score rises slightly, but you rise it again and again, check with 3d mark 06 again and again but then score is lower with the last check, thats its "throttle" point and thats means you are better off with the lowest speed with the highest score. basically the card downclocks it self not because of heat throttleing bu overclocking throttling.

So thats why I *THINK* is whats happeneing to you.
It doesnt show signes of artfacts because this sensitive throttling doesn't allow you to get there :)

Hmm, i'll look into this and see if that's the case. But, back in the 169.xx days, I never experienced any downclocks whatsoever and i was using the same overclocked settings as I'm using now. Also, I had one driver which i can't remember, i think its 180.xx. It downclocked at stock clocks when I was playing Fallout 3, which was very weird. I suspect its driver issue.

And another thing, right now i'm currently using 179.14 Asus Mobile drivers. Was testing it on Left 4 Dead for 3 hours and so far no problem. I'll do further tests and see what'll happen.

Lol, you guys might say im a bad influence but raising the clocks gives me higher performance increases and no downclocking in the middle of a game,

8800m gts clocks 650 950 1500 overclock is my set up.

I have finally found a solution to downclocking. When disabling powermizer, turn it off completely i.e. disable powermizer for both AC and battery. Apparently, powermizer still kicks in for AC even though its disabled on AC mode. Before, my max temp was 77C then it would downclock. Now, the max it would reach is 80C, slightly higher than before, but now theres no more downclocking after testing for 3 hours in various games!

Lol, all i did was pick up the top of my laptop at an inclined angle so it can get more air.

Then i disabled powermizer on AC and Battery so i dont get any downclocking
when overclocking to 650 950 1600 on my 8800m gts.
