DAII was the first game I've ever traded in. It wasn't awful but compared to the first (which inevitably it will be) it was poor, felt rushed and lot of the game design was just plain lazy. It was half an RPG and should have been called 'Kirkwall' or 'The Champion', not billed as a sequel.

Well, that depends on what elements you look for in an RPG. I like Mass Effect 1 and Mass Effect 2 but I would call them shooters with some RPG elements. Many people call them RPGs. To me real RPGs are the likes of Ultima, Wizardry, Baldur's Gate 1+2. Dragon Age Origins is great too and it strikes a perfect balance between visuals and contents. DA2 appeals to a very different group of audience. Nothing wrong with it but it's not my cup of tea.
I missed BG1 and BG2 while busy playing Diablo 2 so I'm playing them now.
I can't wait to see Diablo 3. It's not a real "RPG" in the traditional sense but it will most likely have better build quality than DA2 based on Blizzard's track record. The Witcher 2 is also a good choice, but I can only afford the time to play 1 RPG at once.

Also, I don't think Bioware forgot how to make an RPG like Dragon Age Origins or BG1+2.
I think they just don't want to invest the amount of money, time and people(for example someone like Brent Knowles) to make something of that quality.. I'm glad Blizzard is taking its time instead of rushing to release Diablo 3. Expect it to be a fun hack and slash dungeon crawler.

For me both Dragon Age: Origins and Mass Effect 1 where awesome games.
Mass Effect 2 where streamlined to cater more to the console crowd but its not that bad and the DLC thats been released was excellent.

But rehashing the same dungeon levels on Dragon Age 2 was for me a big letdown.
Also the game could have been more like DA:O but at least i bought the game at a 50% off sale.

I almost want to install and play BG2 right now after playing it more than 10 yrs. ago. I still have the original game, including Planescape:Torment, Icewind Dale, Neverwinter 1 and 2.. I lost BG1 last year due to moving:-( I have all Thief 1,2 and 3 also.

I did enjoy DA:O. But Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, especially 2 has real excellent elements, it's hard to beat even at todays rpg standards..

It's nice to see BG fans here in this forum.

I just did in the last week and its brilliant still now with all the settings on full the scenary is excellent the story is gripping and you just cannot believe that this game was not continued because even in its 2D form it amazes.

Nothing beats the red dragon armour and glowing swords. Baldurs will always be the greatest RPG.

I'm playing BG right now, too. Still pretty early on because I got distracted by the Steam summer sale, but well. Loaded it up with a whole buncha mods and Tutu.

Playing a Paladin, because they're just that broken. Why would anyone ever want a fighter in this game? Pshhttt.

I found my original copy of BG 1, but I realized I think I lost the expansion for BG 2 "Throne of Bhaal" which is almost as good as BG2. Planescape:Torment is so tempting to install and play again also.

I guess these are the titles for now to be busy with while waiting for Skyrim.

Edit: Found Throne of Bhaal! :)

I liked DA2 — a lot of skills to chose from, different builds and group compositions to explore, descent combat system with nice visual and some storyline. That works for me.

Only real downside is that they copypasted some locations but i cant think of much more flaws. ME2 for me is a shooter with storyline, not an RPG at all.

While I'll agree with BG1 & 2, Wizardry and Ultima being Rpg's, Diablo 1 and 2 , being great games are not what I consider rpg's, more hack n slash !
Real rpg's are Fallout's 1 and 2, Planescape: Torment, BG, Icewind Dale and The Witcher 1 and 2 and so on. While I liked ME 1 and 2 ok, they were not what I consider real rpg's.........................rpg-lite on rails, is more like it.

It's a shame that company's like Biocrap have sold out and are more concerned with making games with more bling-bling and eye-candy, than substance !

Even though I have all the originals, on disk, BG, IWD, Fallout, Planescape, etc. I bought and downloaded everyone of these classics from GOG and they are loaded on my pc and ready to go.

From the looks of the latest crop of so-called rpg's, I'll probably be playing one or two of the above mentioned, shortly and hoping, with fingers crossed, that they don't totally screw up Deus Ex: Human Revolution !

I will get it. It isn't bad and it cost less than 20 dollars. I do wish they put more content in DA2 though.
