    It is official people!
Gearbox Software (Borderlands) is continuing where 3DRealms left off and 2K Games will publish it! So get ready for some hot action!
I hope they will cut half the game and release it later in DLCs, just like they did Mafia 2 :)

"The Journal reports Gearbox began work on finishing up Duke Nukem Forever in late 2009, and the game is expected to arrive later this year"

'Borderlands' studio Gearbox resurrecting Duke Nukem

IT'S TIME KICK AND CHEW BUBBLE GUM!

This was rumored a couple weeks ago wasnt it? Either case, excellent news...just sucks that its not going to be finished by the old minds behind the original game...I hope Gearbox doesnt try to make it their game and focuses more on just finishing it, ya know?

Oh brother, here we go again.
I refuse to believe the game will ever get done even when there are boxes on retail shelves.

How can GearBox do this? I thought 3D Realms still owns Duke Nukem and they won their case in court against 2K to retain ownership.

And from the other blogs from the 3DRealms team the impression I had the game was essentially already finished by them, not Gearbox, just never released.

Lastly, to reiterate, 3DRealms still owns the Duke Nukem franchise. Wonder if 3DRealms will sue 2K and Gearbox.

The problem is if it's been gutted by the changes. Duke Nukem 3D got popular because of the attitude and the self-deprecating tone of the game, as well as the pop-culture references. If they don't keep the proper tone, the sequel will bomb.

Hmm just checked 3DRealms forum. Duke Nukem forum is closed and no more topics allowed, must go to GearBox forum.

Wonder if this means 3DRealms sold the franchise.

Any good Duke game needs to have a bad boy kind of feel, and IGN's article talks about it:

Duke Nukem Forever is Not Bulls--t - PC Preview at IGN

Here are some of the quotes from the article:

"The trailer shows off Duke in fine form, kicking alien with a variety of his best weapons, like the shrink ray, freeze ray, and devastator. It looks like the aliens Duke punished before are back – and they are here for our women. This personal affront to Duke leads him on a mission to kill everything in his way, including a giant alien queen with three breasts. And in typical Duke fashion, after seeing the entirety of this tri-boobed enemy, the hero quips, "Hell, I'd still hit it."

"At the conclusion of the trailer, a woman remarks to Duke that his new adventure looks great "Yeah, but after twelve f---ing years, it should be," he responds as the logo – and icons for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC – slam into place below it."

"The game opens with Duke standing at a urinal, doing his business."

"The demo ended with a set piece of Duke at a turret shooting at a horde of pigcops. After slaying the swine, an alien ship swooped down and blasted Duke out of the turret. As the slip lowered itself to the surface, Duke's hand slowly rose into the air... and extended the middle finger."

All that sounds pretty much like classic Duke to me. I'm excited =)

    Nope.

Looks like 3DRealm are going to really get screwed on this. Gearbox will get the credit for all the work 3DRealms did.

I don't have hard proof. But it looks to me 3DRealms really did finish the game. But while they owned the franchise, 2K still owned the publishing rights. So 3DRealms sold the franchise and 2K just gave it to Gearbox as developer.

And now Gearbox will get all the glory for hardly doing anything. The videos, the pictures all look to be the same as what 3DRealms did to me.

Wow, and I was just playing the 3D Atomic Edition the other day in dosbox. Even if I never get it, I'll be watching this one closely. It would be nice if they got the original voice actor to play Duke again, but I realize the chances of that are next to zero.

Sad thing is, after all this time, I doubt the game will live up to the hype.

We'll have to wait and see if there are any legal ramifications behind the "release" of this "anticipated" game.

Unlike Starcraft, I don't remember Duke Nukem having a large player fanbase long after the game stopped retailing on shelves.

it does NOT suck that its not being finished by the old minds behind the original game. they completely screwed it up. it should have been released so long ago that i would have no interest in playing it. 3d realms screwed the pooch on this one. many, many, many times.

If you say so. If you read the wikipedia article here, especially this part, you'll see that they were developing the game with their own money and on their own time, and there was a legal battle with 3D Realms and Take Two on whom had the publishing rights.

I don't know why people are so hype about this game. Yes it has been forever in development, but I think Duke is really irrelevant in today gaming world. He died just like the 90's lol...

I guess it would be good for those who never played any Duke games, but for me I moved on.

For those wondering about the graphics
IGN: Duke Nukem Forever Screenshots, Wallpapers and Pics

Take note that these aren't even screenshots, they're pictures taken on a camera at the PAX convention. So if they look THIS good on a camera think how good the actual graphics are.

    These are In-game photos.

It was interesting reading the Kotaku article about how it came back from the dead. Nice to see that insiders kept it going, and Randy Pritchard jumped in to help out ...

Personally, I owned the original since it came out and still play on occasion, and my wife even had a pre-order in on Amazon in ~2000 ... :D
