So the new Duke Nukem is out today and i dident see any discussion threads for it so i decided to make oneSo im around 3 hours into the game and its tons of fun! The graphics are decent too some great other a little under average. Theres just 2 big things that bother me 1. is that you cant carry one of each weapon, the game limits you to 2, it isent too much of a problem but a bit annoying and not that true to the original game. 2. there is NO boot!!!! they have switched the boot out for a weapon melee which does annoy me. But overall the game is great mindless fun with lots of cheese one liners, explosions and aliens

Im unlocking the preload now, cant wait.

MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
sums it up in my opinion (still gotta wait til the 14th for it to come out over here) -
and nudity?

SomeRandomDude Notebook Evangelist
The demo was incredibly boring, like a mediocre 2005/2006 shooter. Is the full game any better?
-
The Happy Swede Notebook Evangelist
There is nudity, quite a lot of it. Some of it is quite disturbing too....
@LaptopNut Yeah i do hope they will fix it with some mods : )
@SomeRandomDude i havent played the demo but it did seem a little mediocre. But the game is great, tons of shooting, executing, beer drinking, boss fighting and badas.ery -
We have to wait in the US for another week.
-
xD xD xD xD xD xD xD xD xD xD xD xD xD xD xD
Found two spoofs of other video games so far. :3
I wont spoil them yet, because that would be unfair for US players still waiting.
But i can tell you this, it seems much cooler than seeing a lame YouTube vid of the demo.
Crap thats still here is health ala CoD weapon limit. D: -
The Happy Swede Notebook Evangelist
Yeah agreed DEagleson, i found those 2 spoofs too. Quite good ones too
but it is a real pity that they limit Duke to 2 weapons i mean cmon hes DUKE not some civilian....
-
4 reviews out on Metacritic for those who are interested in the game, 3 positive and 1 mixed reviews look par for the course. The long development cycle has not helped the look of the game and this is reflected even in the positive reviews. It's still a throwback to games from 2 decades ago so that will please enough of a niche to get some sales.
-
If you buy this game you will either love it or hate it.
Just likes animes from SHAFT, some people love them and some people hates them
So prepare yourself, you will either have a good time and laugh your a*s off or you will have your biggest disappointment. No point reading reviews for the same reason. -
Yeah my thoughts exactly. You're either going to love it or hate it. I for one am quite excited to play it, as I was a huge for of the original on the PC. But I'm not expecting some highly polished FPS..!
-
The Happy Swede Notebook Evangelist
Indeed DRevan, ive seen 2 youtubers, one who HATED it and one who really loved it. So the enjoyment of the game is up to you...

Read a review on Joystick, and the reviewer dident really like Duke Nukem Forever.
Also it was rated down because of long loading times?
Guess they reviewed the Xbox 360 version because my loading times are nearly instant and i dont even use a SSD. lol
I look past the dated graphics and gameplay, because and i quote: "Im back, baby". -
The Happy Swede Notebook Evangelist
Duke nukem is still "A nr.1" in my book
Though they should have worked on EXTREME linear maps, i find it to be an enjoyable game!
-
Found spoof of Gears of War and Half Life too. :3
Edit: Team America World Police too? -
Kingpinzero ROUND ONE,FIGHT! You Win!
Im enjoying it so far. Duke needs to be contextualized, maybe the haters are comparing it to modern fps and stuff like that which involves deep plot, fancy gfx and so on.
Im playing it without thinking too much on whats happening: litelrally what im doing is going thru the level, spotting areas of interest, enjoying the ego mini games, the duke quotes and so on. Plus is a blast-fest, althought the 2 weapon limit bugs me a bit (but i think its a design choiche: there arent alot of scenes with a crapload of enemies, two weapons at least forces you to engage some tactics).
The bosses are silly and cool, the music/pace of the game is a duke 3d reminiscence, which is a really good thing.
If you consider how duke3d played, i dont see how this game is so different. Duke3d was about going thru the level, grab the keycards, find some secrets, hit the exit button and repeat. There where a story, but not so deeply told, honestly it was understandable by the levels you play, but nothing much.
So for me its a thumb up. It feels like an old school shooter, it have duke in it, the spirit and the essence. Exept for some design choiches around the levels, its really fun.
At least i dont compare it to Serious Sam, since they are similar but quite different. -
The Happy Swede Notebook Evangelist
@Kingpinzero I do think it reminds me of the old school Duke 3d but the thing is, (now dont forget i enjoy this game a whole lot!) its like the developers were to afraid of going all out old school, the levels have gone for extremely complex and open to very very linear. That is what alot of old duke players complain about, then also the thing with only carrying 2 weapons... But i do think its a good game, but would be alot better of they had taken their time (lol) to make the maps more complex and big like the old school duke maps. I think one of the reasons they havent done this is because of the cinematic effect it would take out of the game. But hey i enjoy the game, and i guess theres always things you can improve...
-
No matter what people say... I LOVE IT!!
but the regenerating health and 2 weapon limit is a pity... only thing that stopped it from being truly old-school -
The Happy Swede Notebook Evangelist
@kurtcocaine yeah thats right, but dont you miss the extreme large maps with TONS of enemies to shoot at?
-
Finished the game on the 3rd difficulty.
So epic.
Found more spoofs and stuff and the credits where so long. xD
Il recommend this game so much. lol -
The Happy Swede Notebook Evangelist
@DEagleson agreed i just finished it here a little earlier today, on normal difficult though. And it was a TON of fun!!! loved it! some things could be better, but the game is solid
-
How much hours did it take you guys to finnish it?
-
Steam lists playtime at 12h, but idk if this is correct.
I dont keep track while i game. xD
My run was on hard and i did all the Ego boost stuff exept Pinball because im so bad at it. -
Game sucks.
You spend WAY too much time not shooting. Physics puzzles and dull vehicle sections are ripped straight from Half-Life 2 (and clearly got put into the game around the time that came out, since they've been done far better since), and there are way too many times you just stand around listening to people talk. The story is awful, of course, but hell if they don't want you to hear every last bit of it anyway!
It is also, of course, a strict corridor shooter. There are no alternate paths, no secrets, and no areas bigger than a medium sized arena. Duke Nukem 3D had more secrets in its first level than this has in the entire game.
There are a lot of weapons, but you never get any choice on when to use them, thanks to the handy dandy two weapon system. If you need an RPG then the game will give you one, and if you don't need an RPG then you won't have any ammo for it anyway. Here's hoping you didn't like having multiple ways to kill guys!
Regenerating health means you're going to spend entirely too much time waiting behind cover. Then again, Duke's clearly gotten wimpy in his old age because in addition to not being able to carry more than two guns or take a couple shots, he also can't sprint for more than five seconds without wheezing like an asthmatic without an inhaler.
The humor is dumb as dirt when it isn't just referencing games and internet memes from 2006. This script was finished years ago and man, do you ever feel it.
The graphics are bad. More to the point, they're poorly conceived. Everything has a thick layer of blur over it, and the whole color scheme is very monotone, so most of the time everything is more or less indistinguishable. Not that it looks any better when you turn off post-processing, though... then you just get to see how bad the actual assets are. Look, I know this game has a troubled history and isn't exactly going to be up to snuff technically, but big chunks of it look like a 360 launch title and that's not an exaggeration. Some more color or variety might have done the engine a little more justice, but nope, it's corridors and monochrome as far as the eye can see, barring a couple moments that actually try to shake things up.
This is not Duke Nukem. This is a hybrid of Halo and Half-Life 2 without either of those games' high points, and with all of their low points. It is a game five years out of date, not capturing the high-action fun of the original but also not capturing the appeal of the games it's trying to copy either. Bulletstorm had some serious issues, but at least it tried, and Serious Sam 3 is coming out soon with the promise of some actual, unrelenting action spiced up with wisecracks. This should not have been released at full price. -
Graphics are like from 2007. Game looks better with post-processing turned off IMO.
3D Vision works great.
The script is silly, but that's exactly what it should be.
What sucks the most balls is that it's a corridor shooter. Duke 3D levels were waaay more fun.
This game is similar to Duke 3D only by style, and this is about the only thing that's good about DNF. Gameplay is worse.
All in all, it's good for a play-though, but it did not live up to the hype. -
Ever looked in a mirror when you jump in this game. Funny as hell animation.
-
Mr_Mysterious Like...duuuuuude
I was looking forward to this game but now it looks like it's been all hyped up
Incidentally, in my evolution as a gamer, I think I'm gravitating more towards good, high-quality, story-driven, single player RPGs.
Mr. Mysterious -
The walking/running/jumping animations are like something from Blood 2 (1998). At least they didn't skimp out on the boob physics.
-
Sheesh, what are you guys expecting. From the demo it's what I was expecting. What did you want another two year delay to make it 2009 graphics? come on!
-
-
Damn it, another game I wanted ruined with DRM. I'm out.
-
The Happy Swede Notebook Evangelist
It took me around 6 hours to complete, and as i said numerous times earlier. The three major points the games suffer from is the linear maps, the ability to only carry 2 weapons and the health regen. But even with those flaws i still found the game to be enjoyable.
-
I preordered it (free Duke sunglasses!), expecting to have a few hours to play yesterday. When I got home with the disc, I started to install, and it had to start up Steam - OK, I knew there'd be some verification/final download of an activation file or something. Then Steam proceded to download 4 GB of data, by the time it had finished and installed I only had half an hour to play. Not happy at that. Does it even USE what's on the disc?
Ah well, enjoyed the little bit of the game I played so far. Now for some more... -
Credits towards Gearbox for completing the game.
Hopefully they will make a better game from scratch next time now that they own the Duke Nukem licence. ;p -

Must invest in Cyberdyne tech.
Lololol, The Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy. -

Mine hasn't unlocked yet but I'll tell you what most made me think of skipping or waiting for the price to hit the floor. That would be the puzzles. I hate puzzles in my shooters. Didn't like em in half life or anywhere else I encountered them. When I'm running and gunning I don't want to stop and stack boxes and the like. Still, the kids and I loved duke when it came out originally so like I imagine a lot of people did I bought in based on the reviews which said it wasnt TOO terrible and it was duke lol.
-
The Happy Swede Notebook Evangelist
@Krabman Dont you worry, there is a few puzzles but their are extremely easy and nothing that takes to long. So if that the only thing you are not looking forward to, then dont worry ; )
-
DNF was in a no-win situation to be honest. Even if they made it remarkable it still would have been criticized. I figure it's damage control, make it best they can with what they have and release it. With other games like Starcraft 2, Half-Life 3 / Ep 3, etc it's not uncommon any more to have a decade or more span between releases, which imho is unfathomable and ridiculous. But whatever.
-
12 years for this? waste of time.
Bring on Diablo III and SkyRim, those are what i'm looking forward too. -
There's a developement timeline from 1997 to 2011 along with video footage after you complete the game. Basically, they could have released 3 games since then. And the current singleplayer DNF was actually finished in 2009. -
The Happy Swede Notebook Evangelist
@Sarge yeah Duke does hate puzzles
but the way i look at it is, that you shouldent see it as a completed product that was worth 12 years development. But rather as a just a fun no brainer shoot em up. Because the 12 year development cycle was not focused on making the game, but it was because of the problems with the developers that caused this HUUUUUGGEEEE development time....
-
Give it a month and nobody will even care about it anymore, like Too Human or Chinese Democracy. -

Nah, Portal style puzzles.

I agree, the platforming and driving sections of the game are not only unnecessary but also the sections where you spend most of the playtime.
