So now that it's been out for a while, do you think DNF was a bust? It got a lot of bad press, and I haven't heard anything about it for quite awhile. :p Did anybody get it? Did you like it?

I got it. Am I glad I paid money for it, not really. Was it the worst game ever, no.

After waiting for so long for the game, even if it was perfect I don't think it would have received awesome rating after all the hype.

The sad truth is that it doesn't play like a Duke Nukem game. You spend far more time not shooting than shooting, and something is wrong with that.

For the wait and the hype that people have created over the years, no, not at all.

I played the old DN and this new one was too... over the top on the jokes and everything really, that killed the game for me.

Outdated graphics, corny jokes and pop culture references (i.e. the two Olsen twin knockoffs, absolutely terrible), annoying mini-games that felt really out of place, and just plain boring and repetitive gameplay. On a scale of 1 to 10 I would give it a 5. It's almost as if they knew they wouldn't be able to live up to the hype so they just decided to stop trying somewhere along the development process. The fact that this game may have completely killed the DN franchise is what upsets me the most. After the bad press and reviews we may never see another Duke game again. Which may actually be for the best, since in this day in age most people just seem to play army/war based FPS's such as CoD and Battlefield. Duke Nukem is sort of like the old 80's action movies, a relic of the past that is no longer in demand.

Thanks for the (very) informative replies. :) TBH I'm glad I didn't get it after reading the bad reviews. Atleast thanks to dosbox I can still play the original. :)

Duke nukem was like 12 years ago. Are you saying you were patiently waiting for 12 years?
Even single player 3D Shooter Genre got old during that time.

I'll probably pick up the new Duke after a couple of price drops... more out of nostalgia than anything else.

They screwed it up, it was so easy to not screw up! Just make a 100% pipebomb shooter, no cutscenes, just shooting! I'd give it 7 out of 10, was it good? Yes, was it EPIC! No...sorta.

I thought the game was decent. 6-7/10. Very vulgar but I like vulgar.

Of course it was a bust, they are trying to use 15 year old formula in today's market.

Question: Was the original that amazing or are we being nostalgic here. I remember DOOM and what it did for the PC, but really Duke Nukem was always kinda a joke.

Of course the 'neo-nerd-pre-pubescent' will love the 'boobies' but did anyone else feel the sequel was literally garbage? I felt like I was playing a game made by a Sophomore level Community College Grapics Design class.

To your question: I played the original back in '97, and while it was funny to play like Schwarzenegger (that's how I see Duke Nukem), had a few jokes, and some innovative weapons (shrink weapon in specific) I find it was not really worth that hype or high nostalgia some people seem to have with.

As for your end comment: The issue to remember is the probable long hiatus the game had (hence why it feels 'old') and that it was handed over to another studio which had a limited time to make DNF a full game. But yes, it was a bust (nostalgia or not).

Duke Nukem is/was a joke, and imo that is the best thing about the game.
There are so many other serious shooters out there, DNF is for the casual or drunk gamer.
