Hello. I have a E1705 as well. I have recently upgraded/modded my system with a NVIDIA 7900 GTX (512mb) While playing games, I have had this happen multiple times in Frontlines Fuel of War, and DND Online... I am not sure if the card overheats the system, or if the power demand is to high, but the whole system just shuts off, as if the plug was pulled.
IS this a symptom of the system detecting critical heat levels and shutting itself down, or is my 130w power supply not enough. While reading the reviews and instructions in how to upgrade my laptop, it was said that you cannot use the standard 90w supply that is meant to be used with the e1705.. but one of the 130 or 150 versions instead.
On a second note, is there a known working program that allows me to control the activation and speeds of the systems cooling fans? I thought Notebook Hardware Control was supposed to, but i cant figure out how.

Try I8kfanGUI, not sure if your particular Inspiron model is supported but the program works well on mine and fans trigger when I want them to.

Oddly enough, I just found that program. I can get it to turn the fans to max, or system controlled, and thats it. Seems the system has limited fan control, just pretty much "off" "medium" and "all out"
Do you know if its possible to upgrade the processor too in these models? -

You need to check the temps and see how that works.
Use
-HWMonitor
-Riva Tuner
-RMClock etc
in order to view the temps. For more info , click on the link in my sig.
