I tested GTX 970, GTX 1060 and GTX 1070 as external GPU and below videos are the result.
as shown from that videos, is that GTX 970 and GTX 1060 are very close to each others and GTX 1070 is better than GTX 1060 by average 10 FSP.
if you have error 43 with GTX 1060 or 1070, then install old driver versing like 368.81 - WHQL and later you can upgrade to latest driver.

I posted a solution on TechInferno to bypass the Code 43. But that will only work if you have a system with Prema BIOS on it, or if you have PCIe root port settings in the BIOS.

Oddly enough when I put my GTX 970 back in my EGPU setup with the latest drivers (375.70) everything comes to life. It must be something to do with the new series 10 GPUs. Why did I remove my Titan XP from my EGPU setup???
Stay tuned

So here are my findings in relation to AER and Hot Plug using the latest drivers 375.70 :
- AER - Enabled + Hot Plug Enabled - NO CODE 43 / ERRORS
- AER Disabled + Hot Plug Enabled - NO CODE 43 / ERRORS
- AER Disabled + Hot Plug Disabled - CODE 43
- AER Enabled + Hot Plug Disabled - CODE 43
So if you guys have the Hot Plug option in your option in your BIOS for PCIe ports, maybe that will help. -
I am wondering: did you benchmark these using an external monitor, or using your internal LCD with Optimus? (this makes a difference in performance)
Also, which Macbook are you using? What is the CPU in there?
I am myself running a GTX 980 on my eGPU setup, which should be on par with the GTX 1060 more or less. And I am thinking of upgrading to the 1070, but I am not sure if it is worth it because of bottlenecks with the CPU and/or Thunderbolt.
In your tests the GTX 1070 has about 33% performance gains, which means it is not that much of a bottleneck I suppose. (It should be about 35-40% faster on average I think)
Thanks! Very useful info!
