    I never really liked WoW.

Do you know any games like it?

    Is it worth downloading?

Will it take up most of your life like WoW?

eve is pretty good, but you need to put a fair bit of time into it. it will take over your life.

if you want multiplayer without the time dedication play a shooter. (cod1 is my recomendation :p)

    Doh!

Ah well, i kinda liked the thought of the game but i dont want to play something that will consume my life.

I just completed Crysis, came to a bit of an abrupt end which sucked.

I like games like C&C, Supreme Comander, World in Conflict.

EVE online is boring as hell. There r only like 3 things to do. PvP, mine for ores, and do missions or kill npcs for money. IT's the most narrow game in the world and is totally boring as hell. The only fun thing to do in the game is PvP and you can spend 2 hours trying to PvP and not find a single battle.

I've been playing for about 4 years. It is the most in depth MMO I have ever seen. The player run economy is staggering. The sheer beadth of things you can do is astounding: mining, refining, manufacturing, ratting (killing NPC pirates), instances, massive PvP battles, trading, missions, research, bounty hunting, station building, etc.

There is so much to do, most people are a little overwhelmed and just drop the game or call it boring without looking deeper.

Also, EVE will probably consume less of your time than most MMOs. The skill/level system is actually based on time spent training and not killing NPC monsters.

In other words, no matter what, even if you are not logged in you are generating skill points (EXP in other MMOs). Right now I am working on Repair Systems V, a skill that helps me fix up my ship after a battle.

That said, the PvP is the most insane you will ever see. You lose your entire ship if you "die", then you can lose your "pod" that comes out of your ship if people are looking for it or aiming for it. If you don't own a clone, you just lost a HUGE amount of skill points (pretty much 3 1/2 years worth, if it were me). It is like de-leveling from level 70 to level 20 if someone killed you in WoW.

Thankfully, I own a clone that would preserve all my skill points if I were to die.

    http://hammer-eve.blogspot.com/2007/05/links-to-other-information.html

here is a link with plenty of info. i played it for about 2 months and thouroughly enjoyed it. but i don't have time to put in a few hours 3 or 4 nights a week. there are plenty of casual corps though that will help and that are very accomodating with people who like to live real lives as well.

It can be a fun game but keep in mind that lag is your biggest enemy. I finally got sick of all the lag issues and walked away from a few high level characters. If you are east coast USA or in Europe its more playable but the game world is one giant shared world so you cant select a closer world/server to connect to. If it were not for the lag I probably would have continued playing since there are many avenues of game play, but you can lose a lot very fast if you don't pay attention. In the end it just wasnt for me but your mileage may vary.

Here's my thoughts on EVE Online:

    - As Reby said lag makes this game unplayable in some space zones, at peak hours. Cough Jita IV(sp), cough.

    - I started EVE Online just as I left WoW, it seemed all great at first no matter how you look at it. But this game just became so repetitive after about 10-12 days. That game has so much to offer but yet is boring, it's deep but shallow. What I mean is, you can have corps, alliances, you can be a trader, scientist, fighters, miner, pirate, have good or bad standings, engineer, and I won't go into how many tipes of battle ships are there with different purposes in PVP, but it's just the same thing, zones look the same, same boring android voice, same gates, it just makes you fall asleep in front of your keyboard while auto - piloting through gates.

    - I don't know I dont want to bash that game, some people love it, some people don't. Try the trial, that's how I found out if I liked it or not. I don't think it has any limitations, other than unable to send or get cash from other players.

Um, except that you're wrong. There is far far more to do. The fact that you didn't realize this says a bit more about you, don't you think?

StormEffect is 100% right. There's tons to do, and it can be *intense*.
And it doesn't require as much time as WoW does, because your character can progress while you're offline. (That's the main reason I've played it, when I'm busy with school, it's no big deal, I just have to log in every once in a while to start training a new skill)

It's also a really hardcore game in that if you lose your ship, it's gone. You might have insured it, which helps a bit, but ultimately, when you lose a ship, you have to buy a new one. Tough luck.

Most likely you just spent all your time mining or killing pirates? There's a bit of a learning curve in realizing how many options you have. But once you get past that hurdle (which might take more than 10 days), the game has an amazing depth.

I bet it does, I've heard fun begings as soon as you enter 0.0 on your battleship, or what I wanted was pimped out Interceptor, but then again i calculated how much time will that take - WoW....quiet sometime....5-6 months to be precise.

And it was very frustrating for me when I was just doing missions, it would be going from 1 zone to another all the time and it got to the point no matter what weapons I had i just would die and get so frustrated after losing my ship, sure I could skip that quest but then again it just gives so much ISK as a reward so I couldn't skip it easily. And that was in 0.8 zone, in Jita and border zones.

Depending on how long ago you played EVE, certain things may have changed for the better. In my opinion, the current jump system, with the ability to jump to 0m without bookmarks, is really convienient. Also, most of my lag issues disappeared way back when they upgraded their systems with SSD drives. CCP was WAY ahead fo the game with that one, the lag just disappeared.

High density systems still make things a tiny bit jumpy, but it NOWHERE near how bad things were right before the SSD shift. Oh man, THAT was lag.

Also, getting into a good corporation is the best way to enjoy the game. Solo, it becomes VERY lonely after a long while. Lonely enough that even someone like me, who doesn't need company to enjoy a game, starts to feel a little space-crazy.

Too bad I'm a member of The Scope right now *cries*. (That is an NPC corp, people are automatically put into those when they are not part of a player corp).

How may hours a week do you play it?

I like the sound of the game i just want to have a life as well. I hear horror stories about WoW, how people have lost their friends to the game.

I only play about 2 hours a week, long ago it used to be more like 20 hours a week.

Keep in mind that all MMOs share the same addictive base, in most cases, it isn't which game (WoW vs EVE) that will get you, it is your tendency to become addicted. If you are the type of person who gets easily addicted to things, be wary of every single MMO you see. If you aren't, don't worry about one game being more addictive than another.

I'm the type that gets very easily bored with games (especially MMOs) very quickly. I almost WISH I could become more addicted, because I just barely make it to max level in an MMO before I cancel my account and never play it again. Often times it is because I find the leveling aspects of a game enjoyable, but I can't stand what comes after that.

Before you buy, give the EVE trial a chance, you get 2 full weeks to try the game for free. Otherwise, I think there is also a WoW trial out there in case you dislike EVE.

You can play EVE 1-2 hours a day and you will be completely satisfied with it unlike WoW, once you start it you won't be able to just put it on hold.

    - Say you are doing and instance which takes 1h 30 mins to finish, leaving the group will leave you without loots / XP / quest completed and will make other people frustrated.

    - Once you start questing you can't just back out anytime you want, or you probably won't want to do that. (at least for me), especially daily quests.

    - WoW Raids takes hours and hours of your time, leaving whenever you have to leave or want to leave will piss your guldies off and can end up in GKICK if it's serious enough.

    - Once you enter Battlegrounds you can't just leave anytime, unless you enjoy being a deserter for the next 15 minutes. Or spending hour and a half in Warsong Gulch and end up losing, how I hate that feeling.

    CONCLUSION:

EVE Online is very casual friendly but yet it's deep enough to attract hardcore players. You are not obligated to anything, you can leave the game or stop playing whenever you want and come back later. It won't go away, you don't have to rush to do a daily quest before the "new game day" starts or it resets. Even if you don't do your quest quick enough so what, you will still get cash reward you just won't get double-cash-reward for completing your quest fast in EVE.
