(split-off from the other thread)
Elite Dangerous is the main game will be playing on my next gaming laptop purchase.
(for what its worth, I am currently Elite Dangerous on my old desktop (with only dual-core processor), and a Nvidia GTX 750 with 1GB vram and it runs fine at medium settings.)
Can anyone tell us how well this game runs on a GTX 970m ? what about a GTX 980m? (also please specify how much VRAM you have). What detail settings can you run, and what FPS are you getting?
(FYI, pressing CTRL-F gives you a FPS display in the game).

i think its not a demanding game at all at least what i saw.I dont have it but i read a bit about it.980M will destroy it i think

If you can run GTX 750 and dual core CPU with medium settings no issue why are you asking?
-
I can do a test and post settings with 970m later, you could be CPU limited at the moment as recommended is quad core 2ghz
-

A GTX 750 is approximately about a 860M... The 860M is about 2.5 times slower then the 970M and 3 times slower then a 980M.. Also you will have a quad core i7-4710HQ for a minimun so taking everything into account, ultra should be possible...

If someone wants to gift me Elite Dangerous, I'll test it out for you!
I was a huge fan of the original Elite. I played that thing to death. But what I don't like about Elite Dangerous is the always on internet connection requirement, and the massive cash grab for all the "extras".be77solo and Marecki_clf like this. -
As far as the cash grabs, seems they took a page from Chris Roberts' book on that one!!
I haven't loaded it up on my 970m yet, but plan to soon. It did however run great on both my 860m and 780m, so expect no problems. -
On Elite, Yeah I was angry about the always-on DRM, that is a bogus reason they gave about the "living universe" it's really all about control. And, as it stands now the online portion is pointless, hard to play with friends there is no good way for a group to get together, travel together, and do missions together.
But I looked around and looked around, and there is no other game out there right now like it. The more I fly around in my Viper, the less I worry about all those other issues.
(There are older games like Freelancer, X3 and Evochron Mercenary but Elite has modern graphics and Oculus Rift support).Last edited: Dec 29, 2014 -
No doubt Elite Dangerous is an ambitious project. But it would be nice to also have a single player experience unplugged from the cloud, even if the universe had to be scaled back a bit. I understand that there is a lot of dynamic things that happen but it wouldn't detract from a lot of what many users would like about it, which is freedom to roam and explore.
In any case, it would be good to get some feedback on the 970m and 980m. Personally I'm just not ready to pony up $60 for the game yet. -
and I will say that is probably a fair assessment of the state of the game right now.
I still like this game, I really do. Even after being messed-over by the loss of online, and even with a slight twinge of buyers-remorse at seeing what the "released" game is like (as-of Dec 2014); there is no main plot line and there is no good way to play together with friends. The online is a mess, etc. I just play "solo" mode and that works.
But still, I love flying around in space and 1st-person / fighter-aircraft style battles and exploring new solar-systems, fighting in conflict zones, bounty hunting, etc. with the awesome graphics and there's just no other game (right now) that gives that feeling.
Given that, if you are not "really into it" a person could easily burn-out in only about 1-month of playing asking "really, is that all there is to this game?". The dev's are supposed to be adding more features later but time will tell.Last edited: Dec 29, 2014 -
Lets not compare SC to ED please, SC promises features ED cannot dream about, they need serious development team and time to fullfill those promises, as if given 1B I can goto the moon tomorrow? SC doesnt offer these ships only with cash, you will be able to get it in game without too much grind, therefore it is not pay to win. These ships are just novelties for the wealthy people to back the project for those insane to accomplish features, and by insane i mean it.

Yes, let's not compare a game that is out and running right now vs a game that is still promised /planned / in development.
Anybody can talk about planned features and "how cool it's going to be", what is tangible and running now cannot compare to dreams. -
I was a bit unsure whether to get this game too, but the always online thing is becoming more common and it's only really used to access the servers you can still play in Solo mode, I'm avoiding ONLINE for now... Just had an infuriating night where I lost a load of exploration date and cargo because pause doesn't pause so got shot up by the inside of a station for loitering, LOL seemed a bit severe for just hanging around, was only making a coffee
Overall though I'm loving this game you can see there is a lot of work in it and it generally works really well, figuring out different ways to make money and what to do next I'm finding good fun, so to me it's much better value than some of the F1 games i've been suckered into buying in the pastLast edited: Dec 29, 2014be77solo likes this. -
Indeed, SC promises insane features (that I am not sure if they will be able to pull off), if they do, it is better for us, but that requires a huge software engineering team to develop the code base / technology. So let's wait and see. Though ED seems like a very solid game, and it will continue growing, only thing that scared me is that grind seems too much.

What does SC stand for? I don't know the game your talking about...

SC = Star Citizen https://robertsspaceindustries.com/

Oh that game... Yeah heard of this one too... Not a fan of these games to be honest although I do know 1-2 guys who played Elite... I'm more excited for MGS5 Phantom Pain
-
Who is not excited about The Phantom Pain anyways
It is going to be the game of the century type material

As far as the occasional stuttering, a few people on the Elite forums report this happening with different computers/GPU's, I think it's a bug in the game that's causing it. It was really bad in Beta phase, now only seems to happen when supercruising near stars/planets.

So is there a serious 970m + 4710hq + elite dangerous fps result or not?

thanks, i believed you didnt try without cpu throttling.

Just got my Sager np8652 (GTX 980m w/ 4GB vram) and well,,, its not a problem with this game:
Video set to Ultra detail, with V-sync off for this test (otherwise I'd be pegged at 60 FPS all the time). I was at 1920x1080 resolution, even though these screenshots are reduced size.
88 FPS in-station.
144 FPS in-space.

probably better to peg it at 60fps since it means it would use less power.

Moar <del>FPS</del> tearing is better!
