I will be getting a laptop from my parents, as they know I will require one for University. My dad however will not pay any extra money for a laptop with a decent graphics card. I am afraid of the answer, but what is a Embedded Intel® 945GM capable of? I know the answer is probably next to nothing, but, for example, could it play C&C Generals? Thanks!

It should be able to play Generals, but it may not be on high settings. It may be able to play some older, less demanding games, like the previous titles of Command and Conquer, but don't expect it to play anything thats new and that demands a powerful graphics card.

I would suggest to ask your parents to allow you to chip in. Even 100$ budget for a dedicated GPU will increase gaming performance exponetially.

The Ice man is right...if you plan on doing any gaming it would be in your interest to get a dedicated GPU like the X1400. Consider filling out the FAQs and how much your parents are willing to pay.

We can try to help you get a compromise on this issue: if we can point out a laptop that's good enough at a low enough price...

That being said...start looking at the E1505 for starters.

Yeh I have been looking around a lot. Generally have thought that the Asus (normally with nVidia GeForce Go7300 256MB) and Zepto (nVidia Geforce Go 7600 512MB) tend to look good, but I have just found an Acer under £800 (yes, English!) with ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 (as you suggested). But, because I was being so good with my research, I found an Asus at £660, which is exactly the same as the Asus I wanted, just £70 cheaper, and without the graphics card...

If you want to play games, put the 70 on the table. Sell a kidney of you have to.

Well considering I'm a student, I think I will go with the 'selling-a-kidney' idea. Sounds like a plan.... But yeh, I've doing a fair ammount of research, I have come across Asus and Zepto as being the best options. Anyone got any other ideas?

By "any other ideas" I meant does anyone have any other ideas of laptops that I may like to investigate, not whether people have anymore slightly dubious ways of raising money.... but I apprecitate you comment anyway! ;)

I hoped you were joking....I guess sarcasm is always lost online. But moving on. Yeh the slight problem here is that I want a 14" screen. And btw I do have an FAQ in a seperate post in the buying a laptop forum topic. So any 14" suggestions?

Sorry, you didn't mention anything about the screen in this thread.
I know about your other post but I just can't remember everything.

    Good Luck

Thanks anyway. I should be quite excited at the prospect of a £700 laptop being bought for me, but at this stage, it is just so much hassle. I'm tempted to cry. :|

i think ive got the right laptops 4 you

    - Acer TravelMate 3282WXMi
    - ASUS W3V

anyway, look! i consider myself as a SERIAL GAMER, a seriuos gaming addicted person.... and... guess what? ive always played on a laptop, and with a intel 82852 (far worse than your 945). With that thing, ive played the following:

    - SWAT 4
    - Raven shield
    - Full spectrum warrior
    - Pirates of the caribbean
    - Battle for middle earth
    - Battlefield Vietnam
    - ....

You know, ive most times played at 640x480, and low graphics quality, but dont worry, in a matter of weeks, you get completely used to it, and... didnt u say you were going to uni? in that case, YOU SHOULD STUDY AND FORGET ABOUT GAMING!!

you can look at the supported games in this link:
    http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/intel945gm/sb/CS-021400.htm

Studying at Uni? Well, yeh..... Both laptops are good, but I think I may have found better :). And the intel link is very useful! Thanks! So it would be best to get a laptop with a card, but at least it shows that not all is lost if I have to use a graphic chip!

I would take those Intel gaming charts with a grain of salt for modern games...Intel is known to overestimate.

    Don't forget that.

If you have to go dedicated the ATi radeon Xpress 1150 gets the best results in benchmarks.

yea the xpress 1150 on the dell 1501 is pretty cheap especially when you add coupons. It performs very well for integrated graphics.

I know what he means ;)
The laptop that I think I will go for (when it comes out) is the Asus A8Jc. I'm waiting for an E-mail to know when it will come out, but unless its more than a couple of months, then I think thats my best bet. Of course by then everything will have changed, and I will need to begin research again.....

ive always found gaming as the principal distraction of studies. NEVER EVER IN THE WHENEVER EVER try gaming and study, its an explosive mixture.

Better option in such a budget situation is the Dell 1501 with the X1150.

But if you must, yes, the 945 can play Command and Conquers General perfectly fine at high-ish settings. So as you say, not all is lost. Some people say Intel overestimate it in their chart of compatiability but I've found it to be relatively accurate and fair. A few games that work fine on the 945:

    Generals
    Battle for Middle Earth
    Call of Duty
    Soldier of Fortune 2
    Quake III
    Swat IV
    Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War
    Battlefield Vietnam

Of course, there are plenty more too. So, it's not all bad, no, if it comes to it.

#24, I'm not sure what you're talking about...What you quated has nothing to do with what you said... Otherwise, a sense of humour help sometimes

#25, Dell 1501 has never been a good deal, no matter where, imho. Read the review about that

I think the bottom line of that 1501 review was add about $50-100 and get a better e1505...they really killed the 1501 by removing a couple of things (MD, Media Buttons, etc).

I don't know about the US but here in Ireland you can get the 1501 with Sempron 3000+, 512mb ram and the X1150 for 499 euro....the next model up, the 6400, is significantly more expensive, and comes with the GMA950 unless you upgrade it to the X1400, which costs extra again. So at least, here, the 1501 is the cheapest 'budget' gaming solution by a long shot. Prices are very different in the US, so it seems.
