I have 2011 Envy 17 2101ea HD6850M, which I have more or less given up hope on in terms of gaming due to the temperatures
getting so extreme - with thermal shut-downs.

I want to look at this again.

sorry if this is the wrong post location, but I thought it might be relevent as it is looked on by gamers.

Can anyone suggest any changes I can make to stop my machine from getting so very hot that it shuts down.

I am using HP switchable drivers - Driver Version: 8.820.5.1000. Driver Date: 3/31/2011.

I have a laptop cooler which does nothing.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

Download MSI Afterburner check OSD (while playing) and fire up some games to see what temperatures are you getting.
How long you didn't clean that laptop?

Laptop coolers help a little so you can always check online for some that ectually does something.

Make sure the vents and fans are clean of dust and grime, and if you're still having issues I'd go ahead and repaste the gpu (and cpu if it's suffering from high temps as well.)

as mentioned laptops especially high end ones need the fans and vents cleaned out with compressed air on a regular basis and this can make upto 10c difference in temps.
if it is auto shutting down you are hitting over 100c which is not good.
what temperatures were you getting at the time. if you dont know then lots of monitoring software in my sig below. run them in the background and post results here.
