Anyone play this game? I just stumbled into it completely by accident and have been enthralled by videos of it for about half an hour... I may have to break my "no pay to play" rule for this one.

Can anyone give me the inside scoop?

I've played it for 6 months or so total, and I'd say it's worth it.
One thing that makes it stand out from other MMO's is that you don't need to play 24/7. Your character trains skills in real time, meaning you don't need to be logged in to progress. And that again means you can actually mix it with having a life, going to school/work and all that.

It's also a fun game with a surprising amount of depth. Just don't assume that "you have to spend the first month mining", which a lot of people find boring (I kinda like it, it's relaxing, especially if you've got a good book). But the point is that it is truly nonlinear in that respect. You can start out shooting pirates, trading, mining, anything you like. It's not like other MMO's where you have to spend the first week killing rats before you can progress to greater things.

I found the free 14 day trial a few days ago. I had heard of it for a long time and decided to give it a try.

Been playing for 3 days now. what little I have been able to play I really like. at first its information overload. but I think I am going to like it.

I found it entertaining for a while but the lack of a non-pvp server kinda ruined it for me.

Avoiding pvp is fairly easy though. Just have to stay out of the low-security systems.

I'm thinking of picking up the trial once my new notebook comes in, looks quite entertaining and blessedly complicated. I could go for some MMO trading/mining/whatever crap to unwind after work.

One question I have, because I ran into this before, is it all on a 2d plane? I couldn't stand to play another space game where you are denied the z-axis.

But then you can't mine/kill anything worth mining/killing!

    Welcome to eve ;)

Well, anyway ... advice ... one thing that often scares ppl away again is that Eve really has a very steep learning curve. There is no foolproof 'do it that way and you ll be the greatest' way of doing things. Its very open ended with just so many different things to do that somebody starting can feel a little lost ...
That said, i guess my main advice would be not to hang out alone for long, but try to get into some corporation and hang out with other ppl. The starting corp channel is usually quite crowded. They ll help you along, and after all it is a MMO ;)
