Hey guys, just wondering if any of you have ever played eve online? I'm thinking about getting into it, I hear its massive and the Trinity expansion is a huge upgrade to the graphics.

    Thanks

Played it. Loved it. It's a wicked sick game. Especially if you're a sci-fi junky like I am ;). With your spec, you'll be able to run that game no problem :).

IMO, it's better than WoW. That's just my opinion, though.

Played not too long ago. Really beautiful game, and that was with the old graphics engine. With the new one it looks incredible!

Gave it up due to a lack of time available to play it. It has a pretty good community. Apparently when you start getting involved with the story and faction stuff it becomes pretty damn cool.

Just picked up a Dell XPS M1730, so might have to give it another go this Chrissy...

Been playing for about 3 years now.

It's a fun game, it goes way deeper than WoW (although I enjoyed WoW) ever will and I love the SciFi theme. The new expansion made things look very pretty, and all expansions are free. Great way to draw attention!

Do the free trial thing, that is a great way to experience the game for a good 2 weeks before you decide to buy. You can get the trial by clicking the link on their front page at http://www.eve-online.com

    What he said... :p

The game really is amazingly deep, and it takes a while to really grasp that. When starting out, it's easy to get the impression that all there is to do is mine asteroids, and kill NPC pirates.

There's a lot more to it than that though. I've made some good money just on trading. Just travel the galaxy in a big ship, pick up what's cheap at one end of the galaxy, then transport it to another region, and put it up for sale. And wait a few days for players to buy it. *Everything* in the economy is player-driven, which has some interesting consequences. Everything you buy is either looted or manufactured by players trying to make a profit.

Then of course there's the PvP aspect which I still haven't really gotten into. I've just had too many other things I wanted to do as well, but PvP is *big*

So one piece of advice. Don't get stuck mining if you don't want to. I know the tutorial tells you it's a decent way to make money, and it is, but it's only one of many. I know several people who have been turned off the game because they thought they had to spend weeks mining asteroids to get started.

I played the free trial a year or two ago and it was pretty fun, but definitely more ruthless and unforgiving than other MMOs---it's very possible for you to lose damn near everything you've got just because some guy thought it would be cool to nuke your ship. And there are plenty of EVE players like that. Just a warning.

I started playing 4 months ago and now I'm hooked. PvP in EVE is sometimes terrifying and sometimes very satisfying. You lock horns with other players, instead of the PvE environment in other MMO's like WoW. Your ships are on the line. If you lose a ship, you may lose most of your assets and have to start from scratch.

My corp is a purely PvP organization. We base out of highsec (0.5 security status or above systems), but we venture into lowsec (0.1-0.4) and nosec (0.0) systems everyday to kill things.

The trial version won't give you the full experience that EVE will deliver. Try the trial with the knowledge that if you join an active, experienced PvP corp, you will get hooked on EVE.

What about the interface, all the screen shots I see look like you have to be a rocket scientist to navigate the UI...

it takes a bit to get used to, but after about 2 or 3 hours, you get used to the UI. i played for about 2 weeks, then realised i was going to get hooked and stopped. the most complex part i think is the economy, and the skills. it will take a lot of questions and reading up to get familiar with them, and how and what you should do.

It is a bit daunting to begin with, I admit, but after going through the tutorial, and then playing it for some time, you'll get used to it, like Jeff said ;).

Played it for 6 month, quit due to lack of time.

I don't understand why everybody says it so deep, it's no deeper than everquest or anything else with pvp element. Just EVE is not as familiar looking as other mmorpgs, but under the skirt, its all the same...

It is a fun game though, after initial couple of month it takes to build up basic skills it starts getting enjoyable

I've played it off and on for about a year and a half. Very fun game, but you really need to get into an active corporation where people are in the same area of space. It's pointless to play if you're just going to play solo.
