I've been checking out the videos for eve, and the game seems pretty awesome. But i never trust something at face value.

Somethings i want to know from those playing it are

Is it easy to get into

Is it fast paced (meaning it doesnt take me an hour to fly from one area to another then mine for 3 days, then learn skills for 6 hours, I want to always be doing something and not waiting around.)

Is the pvp hard? Do players roam around killing lowbies and then you have to start from sratch?

Is the mining and economy difficult to understand?

    thank you

I tried the trial some time back, and wasn't really impressed. I'm a sci-fi fanatic, but it seemed like too much "work" to actually do anything. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a deep game, but just to get started it seemed like there was a LOT of legwork.

I am of the same opinion of htwingnut, having just cancelled after a month of trying it out.

You have to dedicate a lot of time and wait for ages to be able to compete, and then it just doesn't seem worthwhile.

So no isn't easy to get into, it isn't fast paced and you can easily get killed. The mining and economy isn't that difficult to understand, but as with the rest of the game, it's not very exciting.

I was very disappointed, being a mmo veteran looking for a game with more depth and liking the sci fi theme. I'd imagine that even if you'd played for a year, so you'd earned and trained enough to get the more out of it, that it still wouldn't be much fun.

It claims to be different with it's sandbox style and without the need to grind to acheive. Problem is that it has no real aims, you still end up grinding for currency, pvp is like pre-trammel ultima but slower and with fewer options and the environment is so limited it makes for a dull adventure.

About as enjoyable as programming a database, that can suddenly crash on you and you have to start again.

That is a resounding "no". Eve Online is not an MMO that you can just jump into and start playing. The tutorials in the beginning of the game alone are tedious, long, and extremely dense.

No. It'll likely take time and I highly recommend joining a good corp (guild, clan) right away.

    High-sec, no. Low-sec, yes.

    Yes.

Usually not in high-sec. As long as you have a recent clone of your character and insurance on the ship then all will be fine.

Mining is fairly easy and the economy/markets will take a while to figure out. Again, a good corp would gratly assist in the learning curves.

I recommend doing the tutorials first then joining a corp such as Eve University which will show you everything. Since the latest Apocrypha update, the character creation and tutorials have been improved upon immensely.

So I'm STILL waiting for Star Trek Online... I have never subscribed to any MMORPG, but have played a couple free ones. Star Trek is my all time favorite series, with TNG being my favorite setting.

I hope STO won't be as tedious as Eve.

Just throwing this out there, I'll comment on topic later, but Stargate > Star Trek

    Quoting The Escapist from ZeroPunctuation:

"Its so much work that its no longer a game that you play, but a second job... that you pay for"

Funny story, my friend from across the hall tried EVE online for the 14-day trial, and actually FELL ASLEEP playing the game. It was 4 in the afternoon.

Alright, on topic. First, The Escapist has some odd obsession with hating on EVE for no real reason at all. Second, EVE is a very, very fun game if you can get into it. Sure, it's not for everyone, especially if your focus is on PvE. That being said, CCP is working on that aspect with new epic mission arcs. But anyway, if you're into the whole sci-fi or space scene, EVE will treat you with some awesomely epic battles that's definitely akin to Stargate, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, etc, etc.

All in all, if you're a science fiction geek, try it out.

I agree that Stargate atlantis give Star trek a run for it's money, but the original Stargate had a lot of bum episodes and the enemy wasn't too scary really.

Some Star Trek spinoffs and plot lines were pure gold. They look a bit dated now of course.

Since you seem to be interested in a MMORPG with a sci-fi theme, Star Wars: The Old Republic will probably be released sometime in the summer/fall and it is shaping up to be one hell of a game from what I've seen. :)

Stargate: Atlantis is not very good. How are the Wraiths scarier than the Goa'uld, the Ori, or the Replicators?

I dunno im wary of Star wars games. My fav game was jedi knight 2 outcast, and the PVP aspect was cool, bein a stormtrooper with jedi powers and a saber and the fps aspect of it. I dunno, id jump into SWTOR if it had that =)

I checked out their website and no where does it say if it plays as a FPS or a RPG, or even turn based yech.

It's an RPG based on skills, not levels, and you're confined to a space ship, at least until this winter.

eve is awesome....been playing for a good while now. i have 2 accounts though. one for PVE/industy and anotehr one which can mine in a hulk but is focussed on PVP other wise. It does take a little while to get used to it. the first couple of days will be a steep learning curve but once you get over the ridge the learning will only happen when you are trying something new.

If you were in the Aussie TZ i would gladly accept you in my corp but i am guessing your yank.

EDIT: the trial is free you can learn a great deal and see if you like it. just a 1.5GB DL i think. and not many corps will accept trial accounts.
