My video card will be a 9800M GS. I already have a HDMI cable and a 22" monitor.

I just want to make sure I was doing things correctly. I want the external monitor to be my main monitor. I want to game full screen on it and use my notebook monitor as a 2nd monitor for watching movies, the web or whatever.

I had a DV7T (9600M GT)before and HP decided my video card was bad. I had the 22" set as the main, but it refused to play games on that monitor, except for rare occasions. Then later it quit running them.

Is there anything else I needed to make this work or was I doing it correctly?

When I get the new notebook I just want to make sure I'm doing it right.

Apart from telling windows to use the 22" as the main monitor you might need to tell the game to play in 'windowed' mode. Then if it appears in the wrong location, you can move it around and maximise it. Most games have an option in the graphics settings.

Yep, Windowed mode and drag it, or change the main monitor priority.

Also you can clone the display.

Ok. I wasn't doing anything incorrect then. I'm happy to see that.
