First, I have a question: which companies have announced the external GPUs, and how much will they be/when will they be available?

I'm thinking of buying the lower-end new MAcbook Pro with the 8600 GT - unfortunately, it only has 128MB vram. The one thing I DO know is that Vista allows the video card to share system memory when necessary. So I was thinking that between that feature and the shifting of settings, I would get a few years of gaming from the system.

My question is, though, if it would be possible to use one of the external GPUs that hook up through ExpressCard to "upgrade" later? Do the external GPUs functio nas well as their desktop counterparts?

So far, only the Asus XG station qualifies as an "External GPU". However, performance is nowhere near the desktop counterparts, since these are severely bandwidth limited. There are threads on the forums about the XG station but you'll have to search for them.

So i see now that this stuff is bandwidth limited, but is it possible to get some links of benchmarks in ths thread to see how good an Asus XG station or a MSI Luxium actually works?
