I asked earlier about whether my computer would be able to handle F.E.A.R. and I was told that it should run fine on my notebook. After installing the game and playing for about 20 minutes, I found that I couldn't get my machine to produce decent framerates unless I went down to the minimum settings. Is there something that I am not doing right, or is there a problem with the computer? These are the specifications of my notebook.
- HP Pavilion dv5t Entertainment Notebook
- Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
- Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor P8600 (2.4 GHz)
- 4GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
- 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
- 250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive

it may be overheating. how old is your notebook? you may have a lot of dust clogged up inside your fans or something wrong with heatsink.
-
Are you setting your performance mode to High Performance in the Vista Options? I wonder if you have them on settings other than that, if it'll decrease your performance. Are you also using the AC power?
You could also try to change the drivers for you 9600M GT, it might help. -
I got my laptop in the mail yesterday so I don't think it's a dust issue. The computer is set to high performance. I don't know where to change my drivers and I have no idea whether I'm using A/C power.

a/c power is being plugged into a wall.

maybe vista option is set to run full aa and af?

Well try Win XP if you have that, dual boot. FEAR is quite an old game by today´s standards. "Older" games tend to run faster in XP.
I dual boot Vista and XP and XP gives a much smoother experience than Vista. Even Gears of War runs smooth in XP compared to Vista and then I have optimized the crap out of Vista.
Your 9600m GT should be faster than my older XPS M170 I have with a go 7800GTX and that laptop plays FEAR maxed out at 1920x1200 smoothly without any drops in FPS. I talk about 40-60 fps here and this in XP.
I haven´t tried the game though in Vista since on that machine I don´t have Vista. -
I am using AC current then.
I'll try figuring out how to dual boot Vista and XP but I seem to be the 1 out of a million person who would rather use Vista then XP.
Also, I started up the game today on high settings and I got good frame rates for the first minute or so before it went back to being just about unplayable. Is there an in game command that will show what framerates the game is operating at so I can tell you the drop in framerates? -
it appears that your video card is downclocking itself. Try use rivatuner or other programs to monitor video card temperature. Also I recommend this thread

it should take care the problem if it's downclock issue related.
F.E.A.R. wont work properly.
