    Hi guys,

I have a problem that has left me stumped. I'm trying to install FEAR on my new Studio 15 (see signature for specifications) running 64-bit Vista, but I am recieving an installation error that does not allow me to proceed:

    Error Number: 0x80040702
Description: Failed to load DLL: installutil

    Setup will now terminate.

I got this error even when running 64-bit Vista on my previous laptop (HP), so I am convinced that it is a software issue. Running the setup.exe in compatibility mode doesn't do anything, and my searches online have yielded nothing; FEAR is supposed to run fine on 64-bit Vista, and it doesn't seem to be a common problem.

    Any ideas?

It doesn't run fine, but it runs if you patch right up to 1.08. There are still some issues with shuttering and low performance. Triple buffering helps a lot.

I just installed with the installer set to compatibility XP SP2. Worked fine like that for me.

The problem is that I can't install it in the first place, let alone patch it.

No no, what I'm saying is, point to the installer on the dvd and set it to compat mode.

Dude, that worked perfect for me. Set it to Sp2 compatibility, set admin mode, installed, installed patch, voila!

I did try that, with no success. Guitar, did you have the same error as me?

    Yep, exact same error.
Go into Computer, explore, find SETUP, click properties, check SP2 compatibility and run as admin, okay, run it, should work after that.

Are you using UAC? If you are, try to switch it off to install. Sometimes it can give a rather generic error.

I do not recommend switching UAC off. Vista is very sensitive to UAC. However you have it configured from the beginning (on or off) is how you should leave it. Going back and forth is asking for trouble.

I don't use UAC; thanks for the suggestion, though.

This isn't making sense really as to why it isn't working for you, unless you are doing something wrong.

I just used a different install media from the discs I bought, so to speak. It worked, so it may be that something is wrong with the discs.
