I actually have an original pc version of final fantasy VII that works on my xp desktop but not my vista notebook. i've tried downloading latest compatability drivers from microsoft but still nothing. i can get it to install without any problems but the game will only get to the new game/continue screen and will freeze. any suggestions?

You might want to try just getting the game for PSX and using an emulator as this has several pro's:

    - It will be compatible with whatever as long as PSX emulators exist for whatever you want to run it on (including mobile devices in the future).

    - It will have better graphics. Post-processing effects, greater resolution, higher FPS.

    - Most emulators have save states

And no more immediate pro's come to mind but there are more. Just a suggestion, but remember FFVII for PC is an old game and chances are if it hardly works for Vista it doesn't stand a chance for Vienna or whatever they end up naming their next OS.

What about going into the properties of the .exe file and clicking the compatibility mode box for XP?

vii had trouble running on xp, and you needed a patch for it to work. it will not work with vista, all your future attempts will be futile.

and even if you have the ps ver and try to run epsxe it still requires a lot tweaking and runs a bit choppy off the disc

    Actually,

I'm using Vista Ultimate x64, and the game works, though it's on my desktop.

Should work but you need the following:

    http://wiki.qhimm.com/FF7/Technical/Customising - a movie codec you need.

http://www.ff7-universe.com/ - get the chocobo patch and the 1.02 patch

when you start the game, press a key on the keyboard to get to the menu. Remember the game uses the numeric pad keys by default.

Also, don't forget to give the config utility and the game executable administrator privileges so you can change the settings and save your game.
