So, this thread is dedicated to your first love...your 'gateway drug' of First Person Shooters. What was it that hooked you?
For me, it was Quake: Team Fortress. Along with Capture the Flag these two mods were (in my opinion) the most revolutionary games in first person shooters (not talking about graphics here, gameplay). I wish you could still play them without getting your brains h4x0red off.
How about you?

Castle Wolfenstein 3D.

"It's time to kick a@* and chew bubble gum.... and I'm all outta gum"
DUKE NUKEM was my first FPS experience.
On my first computer, a packard bell with a 133mz P1, 16mb RAM, 8GB HDD, FTW!
For my first multiplayer addiction online, it was COD2 (I know, I was late to the game, but I never went online with games often). -
-
Mine was Duke Nukem:Zero Hour for the N64. Before that all i played was racing games.
-
Doom, played it when I was 2 and I played it till I beat it on nightmare. Then it gave me nightmares for years
.
-
Wolfenstein:3D. Played it on an old Windows 3.1 machine I think.
-
yeaa.. i remember wen i had a computer i had to go through DOS to get into DOOM... oh boy the days... i was rele young.. like under 5 at least..
but first REAL FPS... oh man.. cs 1.5/16 (i started rite as the switchover took place) quick-switching AWP shots... and putting on the silencer for the m4... got soo hooked on that game thats ALL i would play all day... im glad im not so addicted.. yet still missed those nites of scrimming and matches. -
The first I ever played was DOOM but the one that got me hooked was goldeneye
-
Half-Life got me into gaming.

My veri first FPS game... haha... Doom. But the one that realli got me into FPS was Goldeneye 007 for N64.
-
The first FPS I really enjoyed was Duke nukem, cant remember which, but it was OOOOLLLLLLDDDDD.. -
Wolfenstein:3D got me into gaming, but Call of Duty and Counter-Strike got me HOOKED. I love CS1.6 and CS:S scrims. It's a lot better than pubbing. I can play all day and still have fun the whole time.
-
Wolfenstein 3D was the first FPS game I played (and I believe it was the first, or at least one of the first, FPS's back then), but I wasn't hooked on FPS until... oh wait, I'm still not hooked
.
I'm not a very big FPS fanatic, but I do play FPS's now and then. -
Goldeneye for N64... Man, back then my friends and I thought the graphics were intense and great. Now when I play it, it's so blocky and "laggy" when people start shooting rockets and machine guns.
-
Unreal Tournament got me hooked on FPS games
-
My first 'real' FPS was Doom....was so hooked that I have not been able to extricate myself from the mess so far
Actually some of the most fun I've had gaming was with older FPSes like Hexen-II, Unreal and Heretic; maybe because they were so novel at the time, and the graphics were breathtaking (especially Hexen-II).
These days, I am addicted to COD4 MP (SP completed) and Crysis (SP in progress). I can't wait to get my hands on UT3. After a long dry spell in which there were barely any games worth playing, I am in a situation where I have too many games, a great gaming rig, and not enough time to play them all !!
My most memorable FPSes list would go something like this, in no particular order:
-Doom
-Quake-I, II and IV
-Duke Nuke'em 3D
-Oblivion (yeah, yeah, I know RPG and what not)
-FarCry
-Deus Ex
-Unreal
-UT99
-UT2004
-Hexen-II
-Heretic
-Crysis
-RTCW
-StarWars Republic Commando <--highly underrated, but excellent game.
-Prey
-COD4
-COD2 (MP only; the SP sucked)
-COD
-CS1.6 and Day of Defeat (the only good thing to have come from HL)
Notice the distinct lack of the Half-Life series.
I've played so many more..but they all qualify for only a 'meh' rating. -
Wolfenstein 3D and Doom,i remember that on my first pc the game doesn't start saying me Error:Not Enough Memory Requested 640k
Ahhh...long life to 386...But playing it now make me sick...i search in the settings the options to active AA 16x or AF but nothing! maybe in doom2 -
My very first shooter must have been Doom or Duke Nukem 3d... I think. The first fps that I "fell in love with" was Quake 1. It was awesome and I've played it on every difficulty! My first multi player experience was F.E.A.R Combat (yeah I know, I know, I'm a veeeery late bloomer).

Chalk up another Doom fan here. I remember being...around 11 or 12...and seeing it at my aunt and uncle's house. I was blown away. It was gorgeous...and it was incredibly violent.
Doom was pretty much the first thing I looked up when I finally got a PC that could run it, and totally worth it. I think I've actually owned three copies of Doom II in my entire life. I played the crap out of that.
(FWIW, I pretty much count Doom and Doom II as the same game because really...they're the same game.)
Doom is something I STILL pull out once in a while. -
Kids... Castle wolfenstein. And i'm guessing i was around 10 when it came out. If not older.
-
Same here!!! -
My first fps is call of duty, the original and the exansion pack. Awesome games. Ive also got rise and fall, whcih is a strategy and fps game. dunno if that counts tho
-
MOHAA
Omaha beach had me awe. -
played many fps before the game, but quake's team fortress mod took my life away
-
My school had 1 sinclair zx81 which nobody used, went to university and the civil engineering dept had teletypes - no monitor just paper! I did not get into computers at all until somebody let me play Doom on a 486sx 25Mhz - First computer I bought for work had to be able to play Doom well, bought a 486 DX4-100 with 24Mb of RAM and 2Mb of video ram with a 9.5" colour display for £3895. Here I am again about to blow another £3000+ on my 5th laptop as it has to be able to play Crysis. No wonder I'm always skint LOL
-
Doom, the original.. shareware
TFC also gave me a kick in the nawts. That game got me interested in snipers. -
used to play tons of RTS games, because my old computer couldn't handle 3D acceleration and other fancy stuff. Later on, bought a new computer with a decent integrated graphics card, and got Medal of Honor and its expansion sets... and that got me hooked on FPS... -
Another for Castle Wolfenstein 3d!
And when me and a buddy got our 14.4 modems to play against each other in Doom.. I thought I was living in an advanced age. -
I too remember playing Wolf 3d on an old IBM clone that I got for Christmas one year. This was a step up from the TRS-80 Model 3 that I had previously (which had no FPS for it, programs loaded by audio tape
).
Not that Wolf 3d "hooked" me per se, it was more of a gradual thing. After Wolf there was Doom, then Doom2. Then I branched out to Duke 3d and thought it was amazing. Next was Descent, which almost turned me off the genre but Blood brought me back with a vengeance. After Blood things kind of took off with RoTT, Quake (I, II, III), the Unreals....
I'd say that it was sometime during a Q1 DM the I officially became "hooked". Maybe on Rocket Arena? -
-
Ya, I did have a lot of fun with goldeneye splitscreen and more with perfect dark, but Halo was the first FPS I really got hooked on.
-
Doom started it all for me. Through Doom I found Doom II, then Duke Nukem. Afterwards I found Castle Wolfenstein, but wasn't as interested.
-
Delta Force: Black Hawk Down FTW. I was around 8 and I was hooked. Multiplayer was sick. Then, Halo GREATEST GAME OF ALL TIME, BETTER THAN H2 and H3
-
The first FPS games I remember playing and loving are Doom, SiN and Quake, though the first game I seriously got hooked on was probably Unreal Tournament and Day of Defeat (or Medal of Honor on the PSX), up until that point I used to like flight games (But I was only about 10 or 11, hate them now)
-
Deus Ex was my first FPS and boy is it good. The whole game is what got me hooked
still play it today
-
First game... Tekken 4 I believe on the PSone with my sister... ahhh good times... she beat me allot though
With that paul guy... she always knew how to do that red punch thingy
First pc game ever... Half life... at some guys basement... got me scared... didnt play though... remembered the name all my life
First long time gaming... GTA (3, vice city, liberty city stories, san andreas)
First FPS continuously played: RED FACTION !!! WOOOOO EXCELLENT GAME FOR PS2
Garrys mod, HL2,etc... ... just 1-2 years ago
And now FULL gaming craze... CRYSIS, BIOSHOCK, FPS CREATOR X10... -
All you youngin's...sigh
I was surprised when only one other person had played Quakeworld Team Fortress (or QW: CTF)....seriously, that's where Sniping, rocket jumping, grenade/conc jumping all began!
I think we need to go back to our grassroots and have a Quakeworld tournament.
Those were the days, 2fort4...building sentry guns on top of sentry guns, spawn whoring with nail grenades...*le sigh* -
LucasArts Dark Forces. I am to this day a Star Wars junkie. But the best FPS I've evered played on my computer is Deus Ex. That game was amazing. I played it the summer before I got married. That was 7 years ago....
-
OH man, I totally forgot about Dark Forces, truly an excellent game!
-
-
Doom II and it's 30 levels of wonder (not counting bonus leverl)
-

My first on-line FPS was Joint Operations: Typhoon Rising by Novalogic.
-
First single-player FPS that I was hooked on was definately GoldenEye for N64 and following it would be Perfect Dark. My buddies and I loved those games. Following that, we got hooked on MOHAA. I loved the 3-man deathmatches we used to have with my one friend's little 4-port hub.
My first online multiplayer FPS that I was truly hooked on was Halo for PC. After that, I dabbled with Unreal 2003 and then got completely hooked on BF2. -
Wolf3d of course... I used to play it with two of my friends, with one shooting (ctrl), one opening doors (space) and one steering (arrow keys)
Some years later, I played Doom on a friend's computer (which was powerful enough to run it at high resolution). Unfortunately, he had some weird prehistoric optical mouse which *only* worked on a special mouse pad, and which disabed the keyboard in Doom after a minute or two....
We still completed episode 1 though! Using *only* mouse. It's surprisingly hard when you can't save or switch weapons! -
-
I had played Duke Nukem, Duke Nukem II, so I decided to try Duke Nukem 3D, and that's how I got hooked.
-
Single player fps for me never has quite the same appeal as multiplayer.
Think my first multiplayer fps (what's an fps without multi)were Doom,Heretic/Hexen & Duke Nukem 3d. The favorite was Duke Nukem 3d followed closely by Heretic. There wasn't any support TCP/IP and the only way to play was thru LAN or Kali (an IPX emulator). Lan was great but Kali was very hit-and-miss.
Who can forget those shrink guns in Duke Nukem - shrink one of my friends then squish them with my feet! Or freeze them wtih my freeze gun then kick them and watch them break into bits...ah fun times. Damn that's 10 years ago. -
Are you sure you still aren't five? -
The first Unreal Tournament, I absolutely loved it and I still play it
