I just wanted to see what people's ideas were on these FPS shooters because I am pretty much buying all these darn games while waiting for my laptop to come in (I'm dying to get it)...

Don't really know how to make this a poll but what are your guys' opinions, in order?

    1. Far cry
    2. Half-life 2
    3. F.E.A.R.
    4. Prey
    5. Battlefield 2

    thanks for your inputs!! :D

Half Life 2 is a must, but depends if your playing single player or multiplayer.

If your playing online then its BF2 and CS:Source all the way matey!!

But single player its gotta be HL2, Doom3, FEAR.

For multiplayer, all you need is HL2:Ep2.... :p

LOL! nonono, that wasn't the order that I ranked them, but rather just a numbered list of games that I wanted to see you guys put in order. I purchased the Compal HEL80 from powernotebooks.com and just wanted to figure in which order I should buy these games...or install them for that matter because I already bought 2 of them... :D

I'd probably play Far Cry or HL2 first. Far Cry has an incredible amount of mods, I've been playing the game since it has been released.

I'd take them in this order. Basically chronological, with some notable exceptions.
Prey first, because while it's a great game with some fun gameplay ideas, it just feels clumsy and primitive in some ways, compared to HL2. The sluggish loading (and actual loading screens instead of the seamless transitions I expect of a modern FPS), the ridiculous physics and a few other things just make it feel more like a very good pre-HL2 era FPS. It should have come out 3 years ago, and it would have seemed amazing. As it is, it's a mix of great ideas, and things that's that fall short in the inevitable comparison to HL2.
If you had put Doom 3 on the list, I'd add it here as well. It's another good FPS, but once you've played HL2, it just feels obsolete, which is really a shame.

Next, HL2. It's the standard by which I'd measure all FPS'es. Not because it's perfect (it isn't), but because it's so polished, well-crafted and smooth that it's just an excellent reference point. It has no gaping flaws, and generally does very well in all respects.

I haven't played much Far Cry or FEAR, but from what I've seen, they definitely belong in the post-HL2 era. Not that they're neccesarily better games, but they build on the standards set by HL2, and unlike Prey, they seem to have learned HL2's lessons well.

Finally, BF2. Just because it's multiplayer. As such, it's something you can keep playing forever and ever (assuming you don't get tired of it), so I'd keep this separate. Either play it last, or play it a bit in between the other games, when you tire of the singleplayer stuff.

Of course, all this is highly subjective, and everyone will probably disagree... :)

looks like i'll be making another trip to Best Buy for Far Cry...those pictures are just so nice :)

I actually enjoy playing single-player games for their storylines  and ability to frag without having people accusing you of hacking *ahem*(CS)..

however, I will definitely be playing multiplayers as soon as the single player campaigns are out of the way weeeeeeeeeeeeeee :D

Ive only played 2 of those games (HL2&BF2). But if your getting HL2 you will definitly want HL2:EP1. HL2 is extreamly addicting, and a very fun game.

Now if it was me I wouldnt get BF2. Its a great game and all, ive logged around 300 hours in it. But Battlefield 2142 is being released in october, and it looks amazing. It uses and updated BF2 engine so theres alot of similarities, just with 136 years advancement in technology (no ray guns or warp ships, realistic future). It basically took everything great about BF2, got rid of all the bad stuff, and added a ton more cool stuff.

Far Cry predates Half-Life 2 by a good margin. But I was never terribly impressed with either Half-Life game (and never understood the fascination), and when you pack Steam in to Half-Life 2, you can pretty much be sure I'd never let it set foot on my system. The demo was underwhelming enough as ti is.

Of all the games listed, I think Far Cry is probably the best one by far, and the demo doesn't do it justice at all.

Prey is also a profoundly amazing game and a very unique experience. If I had one major quibble with it, it'd probably be the fact that you basically can't lose the game, but it does a very good job of making you forget that. ;)

You can have your opinions, and even though ive argued this on another thread. HL2 is an amazing game, and steam is a great program, which there is nothing wrong with. In fact I wish more games were through steam, or had systems like it. Besides the masses speak for themselves when HL2 is one of the best rated games of all time.

The masses also helped X-Men: The Last Stand gross $223 million and rated it a 7.0 on IMDb. As Janeane Garofalo has eloquently stated, "The masses are seldom arbiters of good taste."

But for what it's worth, I recognize I'm in the minority. A friend of mine is head over heels for HL2. I think it's a bit overhyped and overrated, personally, but that's my opinion and you're welcome to love and worship the game.

I don't think anyone's going to argue that Doom 3's a great game, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy it.

3, 2, 4, 5 are the only ones I will suggest (and i stronly suggest ALL of them). Do not let anyone scare you away from BF2, if your at all sceptical just try the demo. If you get HL2 you NEED to get Episode 1 with it, its great. Prey is fun for the first few minutes, but I got bored with it pretty quick (but thats just me, you might like it, many do).

What's this, a mistruths of the year competition?
Steam might be a great program (that's disputable though), but saying there is "nothing" wrong with it is just plain wrong. It's not perfect. No program is, not even Steam.

Serioulsy, I'm used to AMD/ATI/NVidia/Mac/Windows/Linux fanboys. But you're the first Steam fanboy I've met... :p

Now you're just splitting hairs here. Steam is great because it keeps away casual software pirates (hardcore ones will find a way, no matter what protections are in place), and you're not completely screwed if you have install CDs and they get lost or damaged.

Let's get back on the original topic now . . whether Steam has problems or not seems to be a hot and vocal topic around here.

Im quite sure Far Cry was released before HL2, Far Cry is a lovely looking game but also takes a lovely system to play it.

I would agree that HL2 is **** hot tho :p

HL2 and BF2. I have yet to look at Far Cry but want to. As for the others, I have no interest in them.

BTW, you guys should have a look at Company of Heroes :)

All of them, except Prey. I just didn't like it for some reason...

Although, I think Battlefield 2142 looks "lame". It looks like a re-hash of BF2, (which was just a re-hash of Vietnam, which was a re-hash of 1942), and a bad one at that. They are going to charge us more money, making more people upgrade their systems, just for a shinier, futuristic BF2. One of the BEST parts about BF2 was it's military realism. Sure, it's not completly realistic, but it's not running around in 40ft tall Mech's either. It is the dirty, down to earth war! Choppers, jets, tanks, and jeeps! It doesn't get much better than that!

I would also add Call of Duty 1 and 2, and Battlefield 1942 to that list. Both GREAT campaigns!

If you want a realistic military FPS that simulates open land warfare, then I would have to add Operation Flashpoint to the list. The graphics are not the best but nothing can rival it in what it does. OFP2 is inbound though so you may want to wait for that.

I remember this and while I thought it was well done, it was a hell of a resource hog on my old beefy PIII desktop. I cannot imagine this wil work well on a laptop.

Speakling of which, is this thread limited to games on laptops?

    Hi Cecchino,

You speak wisely! OFP is the best ever game I have ever played. I have it for years and downloaded tons of full conversion mods that make it even better. FFUR explosions, animations and AI are great.

I'm glad that there is another OFP fan overhere.

My vote for OFP too! And Armed Assault (OFP2) :D

    Cheers,

    Ivan

Operation Flash point is pretty resource friendly - I use to run it well on my first gaming PC, a 500mhz P3 with a 32mb TNT2 and 128mb Ram.

My favourite FPS games ever, even today:

    1. Unreal Tournament ('99 original version)
    2. Day of Defeat
    3. Battlefield 1942
    4. Battlefield 2
    5. Vietcong
    6. Call of Duty
    7. Medal of Honor Allied Assault
    8. Quake II
    9. Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
    10.Quake III

Strangely, whilst I recognise they are great games, I was never a big fan of Half Life, Far Cry, FEAR or BF Vietnam....

And I do want to just point out that ArmA (Armed Assault) is more like Operation Flashpoint version 1.5. Operation Flashpoint 2 is going to come after ArmA.
