Im very new to FPS(other than a little halo pc). I was just wondering what is the best way to hone your skills? For example in COD should I start out on the easiest setting or start on normal? Shoul I just keep attempting to beat the game on increasing difficulties after beating it once? Any suggestions are appreciated.

If you want to be good at FPS, go play in some Search and Destroy servers with the PAM mod (CAL/TWL/CEVO mod). Single player doesn't help your skills much at all really.

You're reflexes are your main skills for an FPS. Aiming in the correct spot, and being quick to do so will help you most. Those games where you kick a soccer ball and keep it in the air can help. I dunno where to find them though, lol. Also, are you on a console. or PC/laptop? Joystick and Mouse are quite different to use. Mouse being the easiest and quickest, it's more preferable to play an FPS on a computer.
Personally, if you've got a grasp of FPS, just start on normal settings. It'll force you to act a bit quicker, and in the end will help more with your general skill level.
Hope this helps. -

When I get a new game and want to hone skills, I play on a lage server (30+) for 2 hours and do like "deathmatch" servers. After that, I enter some (10player) servers and practice sniping the guys from afar. They will quickly realize (given the small server) that you're sniping them, so they will expect it (making it harder for you, thus better training). Then I just practice weilding melle/explosive/throwable weapons. Within a day, you'll have all your basics for all situations. After that...just play normal and try and learn the tricks and weaponry for a few days.
I usually set-up a private server (on my favorite map thus far in a game) and use a custom spraypaint on a wall somewhere with a bullseye image (or something similar). Then just jump around for an hour tossing nades, doing jump head-shots, doing a 180-spin with a melle head-stab in <0.2 seconds. Etc-etc. But, that's cause I've lead a lot of clan matches, so, heh, I'm expected to get the stuff down pat.
Just go have fun, FPS' on PCs come naturally to most people after a few days of playing. -
Hi,
From my experience, the best way to improve in FPS is to first practice with computer. When playing with computer, try to focus on one area at a time. For example, I wanted to improve headshot. I kept trying to kill the computer with headshot only. After that, you can switch to different weapon or something. After you improve playing with computer, go play MP and try to improve one area at a time.
It's hard to just jump in to MP and practice because people are going to own you. You need to play with computer and understand basics of game. In other words, you need to first crawl to walk. -
Play Counter-Strike: Source or CS 1.6
COD4 is waaay too easy online -

Thanks for all the tips, even though some of them were contradictory I will take them all into consideration.

What I did in Quake 3 was watch the bots play and learned from them, then adapted to my own style.

Download and check out that guide - pretty simple stuff, but focuses on the basics. -

There's too many basics to cover.
In FPS games, especially COD4, there are MANY factors to be successful.
1.Communication
2.Flanking
3.Aim/Reflex
4.Memorizing the Maps
etc. etc.
There's really no specific order as everything is equally important. To get your aim better, play a game where there are many targets and practice quick target acquisition. On COD4, I suggest Domination or Team Deathmatch. I'd also suggest playing on a higher sensitivity for a while, such as 4 or 5 and once you're used to it, lower your sensitivity. My shot is a lot better using this method. -

This game is much simplier...and I think better for accuracy + speed (percision)
http://games4timepass.blogspot.com/2008/03/mouse-speed.html
You click the numbers in order. It gives you percentage and time at the end.
Some guy on youtube did it in 7 seconds, 100%. my best is 17 sec. -

Go play some CS.
It's got everything you need to know. -

imo the best actual games that offer good training maps for offline use are Unreal 2004, and Quake3. Quake3 is a little harder to find maps for but Unreal 2004 has most of the maps you need with it, and great mots that will help you get your skills up. Best of all both games should run steller so performance shouldnt get in the way of increasing your speeds.

www.missionred.com for reflexes
used to play around on this site right before i played CS.

BenLeonheart walk in see this wat do?
UT99 and games like descent and forsaken help too...

learn to burst fire and spray your gun. if you know how recoil works for each gun, you can aim them better.

Ah... don't make this out to sound like an actual sport, it is what it is. Play the game, if its too difficult lower the difficulty... aim with the mouse, and click to shoot, sooner than later, it should be very, easy..?

The best COD4 training for me was playing single player on Hardcore or whatever the max setting was.
I had to give up half-way but I'm much better online for it. -
Some good tips in here, i've always been good at FPS but never really tried to get better, going to try some of these things out, thanks.

Nah , dont play single player. It doesnt require the same playstyle or reflexes as multiplayer does, even on the higher difficulty settings. enemy AI tends to behave completely different than actual players.
I say the best thing to do is simply play multiplayer. Sure, you wont be good at first but you'll learn the fastest. One thing you might want to avoid is playing on servers with a lot of players cramped together that kill you before you know what you are doing. I'd say play regular team deathmatch games.
