Has anyone in here been in a war? Or still is?
How is it like compared to FPS games? Since you have a completely different point of view...
Hopefully this thread wont just die with no answer from anyone who is or has been in a war
-
well i can't say i've been in war but i've been doing paintball a couple of times...which is the closest i've been to a war.
it's really different from a fps. I mean when you're affraid of getting hit, you don;t go around spraying in all directions or asking the other one "knives?" -
Lol I was reminded of this:

i play paintball too, it is kinda like the game "Vegas" where it is alot of going into cover, poping to to shoot, then getting back into cover... but that is paintball....
-
you dont need high end graphic cards.
-
FPS would suck if they where actually like war you'd get shot once and your screen would go black.
-
Beatsiz, how old are dude? What freakin war? except either in Kosovo or Iraq...
-
iraq has been going on for a long time... and afganastan

Speaking of fps + military correlation, the U.S. military has actually been noted for recruiting members from fps communities (notably COD4). I would assume the candidates would be recruited for their computer finesse (fast reaction time, hand eye, peripheral vision, instictive decisions, etc.) rather than "in the battlefield" abilities. Those recruited would probably end up in front of a computer probing machines much like that of an fps.
And as for paintballing .. AWESOME! I've been a paintballer for years. It's an expensive sport but is a fantastic thrill none the less. However, one can't put paintballing and real world war in the same category. Paintball is for mere entertainment, war is actual life vs. death. No computer game, source of entertainment, or simulation can ever compare to a real life situation. -
*speechless*.
That is just unbelieveble...If they could make a game out of that...hmmm -
-
Yeah true, paintball would be the closest I ever get to war, but its still no where near what the real thing must be like. Basically I run it flawlessly, no dip in frames ever, load times and monthly bill are a little high though.
-
Well, I play paintball every now and then and as people said it's not quite the same but if you take it seriously you'll be much more cautious (compared to an FPS) and it is pretty hectic (especially speedball).
I also hunt, so shooting (like in FPSs) is quite different from what it's shown as being in video games. Specifically, sniping would be incredibly hard to do standing up and with a heavy sniper rifle (as most are quite heavy); whenever I'm using a rifle with a scope it's always with a rest for the arm and it doesn't take as long in real life between shots with a (bolt-action) rifle.
As for a shotgun, I hunt ducks and dove and stuff so I couldn't really tell you much except that the time between shots is pretty short as well. -
People would play FPS's much differently if you never respawned and never could save.

Duck killer

The Military even made their OWN FPS!!! I forgot the name though... lol 3 gigabytes!!! It was actually a nice game! But a serious copy off of CSS and stuff
That Cryengine2 was what got me all hyped over Crysis...
But what I really want to know is what actually veterans or whoever feels about games vs reality
The only one ive ever heard of was this russian guy and his son he was 80+ and his son like 45... they were shown a level of S.T.A.L.K.E.R and the old guy started crying because it was his old neighboorhood in tchernobyl...
And he said that that game was by level outstanding but the interaction was false... as in the guy is walking 5 times as fast as he should and the POV waws too high -
Heh. I spent a little time in the army, and my thoughts are that in a live situation, you'll likely be firing from a lot further away than you seem to be in most FPSes. It's also a lot harder to see well-camouflaged individuals IRL than in FPSes, IMO.
This is, of coursed, referring to jungle warfare. I don't have any experience with desert or desert-like terrain (like Iraq/Afghanistan, which you were asking about), and people are lot easier to spot when it comes to FIBUA. -
I am talking about ANY WAR any situation
Nice thank you... that helps... I noticed in Farcry when you shoot from far away it seems like a giant distance... but when I though about it... I was only looking at a couple hundred yards at most lol -
Also, to the OP, I hunt with bow and arrow (if you've ever encountered that in an FPS) also but I have to tell you it's incredibly hard; you have to be virtually silent and scent-free. -
This has to be one of the retarded thread topics ever, are you people idiots? You can't even compare the two and why the hell would you want to?
Wow...just...wow. -

( 10 char ) -
Its like saying yeah ima run around with a grenade throw it and stand behind a tree and I will be protected... no in real life people would say you go deaf for a while or you feel a shock that makes your heart throb etc...
And yes you can compare them, actually you kind of take the knowledge of experience and apply it to ingame situations -
-
Is curious wrong...? And why can't he compare the realistic of a FPS game towards reality? Since people are doing sport vs reality or racing vs reality all the time?
And realistic of a game compare to reality is among the hottest topic among the game developer to begin with.
I'll say this is an interesting topic to discuss.
But no matter how realistic is the game in term of graphics, physics, AIs etc. Intensity of a real war is very hard or virtually impossible to mimic. The feelings of life or dead, since you're sitting in front of your monitor, and you know you can't die from that.
Still, it will be interesting to see how the game industry evolve.
And yeah, i'm not quite agree that you can apply real world combat experience into a game.
[EDIT]
Well.... you can die from sitting in front of a computer for a long long time though lol. -
This is a straight up lame thread.
Beatsiz seems to like to just stir up odd things. -
