Hey are these expansion packs? And how does steam come to know if you have a Ati Card?

Whaaatt? That is just incredible!
Downloading right away! Thanks man! -
It is quite incredible!
Steam has some sort of program that runs and does a hardware check to make sure you have an ATI card. Then you can download the games!
Also, if anyone does have an ATI card, but doesn't care for HL2 I wouldn't mind a free steam account. -

Indeed! Downloading right away, Steam is patching now... oh it is ready while I type
-
I pity myself i dont have Half Life 2 otherwise would have downloaded them
-

Haha great! Just made myself an account
It includes Deathmatch and Lost Coast. I just can't thank you enough Jason! I wish I could rep you.
-
so these are going to work unless you have HL2, because they're just expansion packs right?
-
The only machine I have powerful enough to run HL2 is a desktop with an nVidia GPU. I do have an ATI in my laptop. There would be a way to install steam there with the same account (IIRC Valve lets you do that as long as you don't use the two machines at the same time), get it to detect the GPU and then run Lost Coast on my desktop but I don't have Windows installed on the laptop and I'm not so keen on installing XP just for that. (This is a laptop I'm going to phase out this summer.)

My friend has done the same. His father has an X700 and he an 7600Go. So he downloaded from his fathers notebook, installed it on his own.

Meh... I've checked out Steam's web site and found out that if I buy Episode One, I'll get Lost Coast and Deathmatch with it. Since I'm planing to get Episode One anyway, this deal does not give me anything I won't get by other means.
I'm not saying people should pass this up, but in my case it's definitely not worth getting through the effort of installing steam on my laptop.
Oh, and Lost Coast comes with HL2 anyway. -
I might try this on my second desktop. Not sure if it will allow me to... I think it has an ATI Radeon 9000.
-

Haha doesn't matter I think. Like my friend said: where can I get an ATI card for 5 euro's.
-
-
I was running HL2 sadly on my old notebooks Intel GMA 900. It did quite well, at 40-60FPS on high settings, until you ran into someone. It would then drop down to the 5-20FPS range.
All I want to try and do is download HL2 on my second desktop with the ATI 9000 GPU. Then I'll just play on my desktop's 7900GS! -
always new ati was beta than nvidia
they must sponser steam
-
they should give us a hl2 not other stuff.....
ㅜ.ㅜ but they are giving to someone that buys dirct 10 ati cards... -

That is not correct. You can also download HL2 Deatmatch and Lost coast. You have an ATI video card, and that is enough.

Read about this offer some 2 weeks ago, but when does it end?
Uni doesn't let games through on the network, but the new flat is 2 weeks away but with getting a new ISP, will this offer still be around in a month? -
Thanks for the heads up.

I don't know LFC. I think it is for a short period. No place where you can hook up and download STEAM?
-
ok i did this installed it etc played Half life 2 death match fine but when i load half life 2 lost coast i get Engine error; : gamegui .... any ideas anyone? i really wanna play lol
-
I already have it but thats still cool news for a lot of people.
-
its not letting me download them, it keeps saying, "Duplicate Registration. This offer has already been activated using a different Steam account."???? anyone else getting this or found out how to get it to work?
-
This is the kind of error message I would expect if you have one machine with two steam accounts on it. If the deal is registered with one account, it may record the serial number of the card (this is high speculation) and won't let a second account register. Maybe??
If this is due to registering the offer on one machine and then trying to play on a different machine with the same account, I'd say the error message is misleading and I would also say that's contrary to the usual Valve policies and thus would be surprising. I've definitely installed Steam and HL2 on two machines with one license without problem. I'm just not allowed to play HL2 on both machines at the same time. -
Steam doesn't have a problem with you installing on multiple pc's. The license is per account. That's all the really care about.
-
but thats the thing i only have the one steam account, i have never even had the program (steam) on my computer before this offer???? i have a x600 if that makes any difference. -

its really finnicky.
i told some of my friends about the offer and at least 2 people were stuck with that error message.
hl2dm and lost coast offer will probably stick around for a while.
they aren't expansion packs. hl2dm is the multiplayer component of hl2, and they tend to toss it in with other purchases (like hl2 episode 1, as noted above). lost coast is like 1/4 of a level with developer commentary showing off some of the tech they were working on a while ago- light bloom and the like. you will actually get a lot more hl2 action and just downloading the demo, though.
also- for those of you who dont know how steam works- you make an account with steam and purchases (or in this case, a free game giveaway) you make are attached to your account. so once hl2dm and lost coast are attached to your account, you can download steam on any computer, login, and it will download and install all the necessary files to that computer. -
I too get that error message. My laptop has the go7300 but my desktop has the x600. I used my account on my desktop and i got that message?!?! Whats going on?!?
Has anyone e-mailed vale or steam support? -
Strange... I have never used valve / steam support before. Is there not a forum for questions and problems like what your getting?
-
im so pissed that i miss out on this offer cause i dont have an ati card
-
-
-
!!
-
i installed steam on my desktop has an ati 9550 or soemthing like that got the free games etc ... went to my laptop which has vista on it loaded steam logged in still had the games etc etc then i needed to reformat and so i did installed steam again after that and the games weren't in my steam account anymore ... any idea ... ps laptop has a nvidia card
-
Can i download the expansion packs now, then later install hl2 (after i purchase it) and then install the packs?
-
lol randomly remembered this offer
I think it is safe to say it will be around a while
Having tried it now (thank you 13 Meg internet even though not 24 as advertised lol) I think I will buy HL2 proper. Yes I am that late to the game - I've still yet to start playing OblivionI see HL2 holiday pack for £14.99; HL Source, HL2 + HL2 Ep 1. Pretty good

half life 2, half life 2 death match, and half life 2 lost coast are all separate.
they share a lot of the same core files, textures, and of course the same game engine, but the order you install them does not matter. you can install only one, or all three. they each show up as separate applications in your steam games folder when you log in.
while obviously a lot of the files are the same between the three games, that does not limit your ability to purchase / download each of those 3 individually. plus the common files are stored in a common folder, instead of wasting space redundantly on several folders. that means if you have hl2 already, the lost coast level is a really small download.
without hl2, its somewhat larger of a download.
while its cool that ati is giving these away, and i dont want to burst anyone's bubble here, but again, lost coast is a very short level that shows off a directx9 implemented bloom (that doesn't use hdr - shader model 2.0 cards can use it, and you can use anti aliasing with it), and some other old tech. but its all old tech now. you'll get more hl2 action with the demo.
ALSO
half life 2 deathmatch is a little wonky with the internet latency with all the physics going on. it just doesn't translate well, and there isn't much of a player base, as you could guess. hl2 dm over a lan is AWESOME though. keep that in mind. -
Don't worry about it. No doubt Valve did this to drum up business for Ep2 and also for people who have never encountered HL before (like myself - well I did play HL but that was 3, 4 years ago. I would like to get into it again with new "source" graphics). Shame I don't have so much time for games
Oblivion has been sitting there for 2 months
Regards -
Been trying it out a little. I don't think I will get into HL2 until Orange Box comes out - I have to complete FEAR, the EP and start Oblivion anyhow
I love Steam. Slick, fast and unobtrusive. I like how it auto-downloads patches and updates. No more hunting around on the developer's site. Best of all, the prices are in $, allowing my £ to go further. I think I will download Orange Box when it comes out on Steam, rather than buy the retail box now
A big thumbs up for Steam and I hope more developers sign on -
why the big buzz? isn't this offer just for a demo level and the online deathmatch?
