My buddy's laptop is having issues, and I'm not sure where else to post this. I'm not sure on the exact model and specs (I can get them a little later)

The Problem: At randoms times the fan kicks on full speed and the CPU usage goes to 100%, and remains that way until the laptop is turned off. Performance goes right out the window as if it's running on 128MB of ram. It seems completely random because it happens at anytime. Sometimes right after the login screen, sometimes while opening Internet explorer, or sometimes it doesn't happen for awhile and while he's playing WoW it will happen randomly. It doesn't make sense to me. We've tried scanning for viruses with Nod32 and spyware with Ad-Aware. We've removed unnecessary programs from running at startup, (and some non-Windows services) We've gotten all the latest drivers and updates. He's running Windows vista basic.

Another thing that doesn't add up is when it's having an episode, the task manager will show 100% usage but clicking the CPU tab doesn't show any program taking up significant amount of usage.

Any ideas on what the problem is? Trying to figure it out with out formatting or having to ship it off to dell due to his College finals.
