Just curious what game people prefer given the distinct similarities between them.

Personally, I really didn't enjoy Fallout 3. I was really looking forward to it because of how much I loved Oblivion, but I just found Fallout 3 to be unusually difficult and frustrating at times. The story seemed to be more compelling but I was always running low on ammo, health, and skill attributes. I really have nothing bad to say about Oblivion except that some of the side quests got a little repetitive but besides that my vote easily goes to Oblivion. I gave Fallout 3 a few solid hours into the main quest before I ended up returning it.

I finished Oblivion and recently purchased Fallout 3 and finished it too. There's a lot of small detail/features in Fallout 3 surprised me.

I love the fact that how Bethesda pay attention to mod community of Oblivion and incorporate some really nice mod into their latest release (For example the key chain).

I personally lean towards game with theme such as Oblivion and Diablo series. Thus its not only gameplay that made me love Oblivion more. I'm really looking forward to future release of Oblivion (If there's any).

    [EDIT]

I guess I don't really answer to your question... Well, IMO side quests are to help you to progres easier in your main quest. So do them if you found the main quest is hard or you're almost bingo on supply.

I own both for the Xbox 360 and I think they are both great. The biggest problem I have with Oblivion GOTY and that's after playing Fallout 3 is how easy the game can be.

With Fallout 3 you have to choose your fights carefully or you'll die real easy, which I like as it adds tension to the game. I also like the story line which is quite immersive which fits perfectly with how whacky and unstable things are in the real world today.

Either way I tend to favor Western RPG's over JRPG's as the stories have a little more meaning and are easier to relate to. As a gamer I do enjoy RPG's now more than I use to. I do get tired of the boy gets to save the world storyline which is in 90% of JRPG's. With that said I just started Persona 3 FES for the PS2 and it's excellent. I recently bought Persona 4 as well.

The difference is very minimal I must admit. Looks like the same Gamembryo engine and similar customisations. As Oblivion was my first love, I prefer it to Fallout 3.

Fallout 3, because in oblivion no matter how high of a lvl you were, all the creatures seemed the same strength and were anyoing to kill.

i like the fact that the game actually is difficult in that you run out of ammo very easily. it makes you think twice about doing certain things, or attempting certain quests. i never really find myself being rich, because when i finish a quest i always go back and sell everything i have, and then buy medipacks and ammo, leaving me with minimal bottlecaps to spare.

i also like the setting mostly because i live in the washington DC area, and it's kinda weird having the game based off a place you live in.

I very much like Fallout3... I like the fact that it is hard and things are scarce.

Normally I like sword/sorcery RPGs better... but honestly Fallout3 is that good.

I really should get Oblivion again, this time for the PC (played on the 360), once I'm done with Fallout 3. That said, I voted for fallout 3 because it feels polished, the dialogue and quests are interesting, and the combat is fun. And there are quite a lot of locations to see with a majority actually hiding useful and exclusive weapons. Oblivion had problems with scaling equipment and a lack of exclusive artifacts and weapons, Morrowind was better at that. But Oblivion did have some pretty dungeons and great visuals, and I enjoyed the emphasis of blocking and using power attacks in combat (others didn't?).

oblivion is a weird game, the leveling system is just obsurd.
in oblivion, if you level slowly, i bet you can complete the main mission in like 5hrs, the story is very thin.

While Oblivion could be deemed as being more "epic" in scope I have to give the nod to Fallout. Primarily because I prefer the post-apocolyptic theme and it's wry cold-war humor. It also is very immersive being that this world could actually happen one day in RL.

I liked Oblivion's mods. Made it a great game, the vanilla version was good too but overall the leveling thing just made me want to kill myself. Luckily there was a mod for that!

Fallout 3 had a better atmosphere and every now and then you would laugh your @$$ off because you did something that was just... well....undescribable. No creature leveling either, they just started to get better weapons, which was fine by me, if I did my job right, they wouldn't get a shot off =D Stealth + Small Guns (.308 Sniper Rifle) = Win

At the end of the day here is how I would grade them:

Oblivion: Lasting fun gameplay, after original playthrough.
Fallout 3: More enjoyable the first time, then fades out.

I have to agree with Delimeat.

Oblivion's wow factor was much greater than Fallout. Fallout's core gameplay is much more impressive, as is the main story. Oblivion, however, managed to hold my interest for several hundred hours, while Fallout ended for me after my first playthrough of the main quest. The reason, I believe, is that because of Fallout 3's post-apocalyptic nature, there was very little to explore in the world. The places I did come across were very, very, interesting, such as the cannibals of Andale and the Republic of Dave. The problem, though, was that most of the game felt barren and pointless.

Oblivion's lush areas were much more enjoyable to stroll though. While they were at the core just as uninteresting as Fallout's wilderness, Oblivion's seemed to hold more value in that it wasn't a wasteland. It felt livable.

Fallout 3 is much more refined than Oblivion. Oblivion seemed so thrown together in its gameplay; every time I reinstall Oblivion (I will for the Nehrim mod) I have a set of mods I MUST have. Included are the faster-moving spells, increased arrow speed, more damaging combat, TNR, level-scaling fixes, darker nights, and several things that save the actual game for me. Fallout works well on its own. I don't ask for faster bullets or anything, do I?

Finally though, Fallout seems much more limited content-wise. The recycling of buildings and textures is much more apparent in Fallout than Oblivion, although I'm well aware that Oblivion used textures over and over and over as well. Fallout 3, while objectively more encompassing than Oblivion, seems to lack a varied world because the entire world is the same: one large wasteland. Oblivion has something for everybody; it has the snow-covered peaks of the Jerall Mountains to the swamps around Bravil. (I even began work on making Dive Rock a town, and turning the little easter eggs (the beast and the elf who fell off the mountain) into actual quests. That project was abandoned in its very early stages.

What am I going to do with Fallout though? I can't just plop a town down anywhere I like, and honestly, the town would end up being just like any other.

I think what I've been getting at is that the people, quests, and atmosphere of Fallout is better, but I prefer Oblivion because of the actual world it is put in. A dream come true for me would be a complete sci-fi mod of Oblivion, with lasers and the such. Except that it isn't a steampunk thing like Fallout; I'm talking Bab5/(Battle)star Wars/Trek/Galactica stuff. That's my favorite kind of world. :D

Im in between, but i would more or less go with Oblivion. They are both great games. But about Obilvion, there felt like there was a more in depth story and you would get more into. Where as to me Fallout 3 consisted of "do this quest, but to complete it, do 2 others" such tat at the end there wasn't much to do. What i like about Oblivion was that of how many quest there were, and what fallowed after them, such as with the Guilds and such. It also felt that your items where a little more point-ful.

I felt that wearing one armor in Oblivion compared to another you could tell a difference in how you attacked and moved. Where as in Fallout, it all felt the same. What i did like about Fallout 3 was that the enemy's where fun to kill and not just take a while, and it was also enjoyable to watch there head blast off and there body gush out blood.

With Fallout i didn't feel much of an interaction between you can NPC's, sure you can choose what you say to people, and sure you can put hummer into what you say, but beside that you didn't do much.

The key things for Fallout is that they made it more of a FPS then a Role-playing game, but that's ok. Such that if you want to play a game with a story and shoot up some mutents, Fallout is a great game. But if you want a real in-depth game where you can achomplish a number of different goals, then Oblivion is just that. I have to say i never really cared for the leveling system, and if you did put up the difficulty high, then you would numbers of hours of frustration of how kill just a few people.

More posts for Oblivion, but more votes for Fallout 3!

I haven't played Fallout 3 yet, so it would be unfair of me to vote now. I wasn't sure if my system could handle it? I don't want to play it at low settings...

Scythie, your Vostro should manage medium settings. I actually maxed everything out, but I have to do a "circle load" every time I enter a new area.

I'll submit the poll once I've actually played it but its pretty hard not to beat oblivion. Oblivion was broken on so many levels: the free money (alchemy), the broken levelling system, the uber weapons (multi-use soul gem + crafted weapon), the broken spells (7 seconds paralysis?), etc etc.

but... having so much fun with FO3, has made me want to revisit Oblivion, and maybe beat it this time.

Right now, i'm almost done with all the side quests, before finishing the main storyline. Having an absolute blast being an evil character LOL. :D

See, I really wanted to enjoy it but I just couldn't get into it at all. I just kept dying and I was getting so frustrated lol

But yes I do think the story is great. Don't care much for the post apocalyptic theme because the scenery looks the same no matter where you go but I was much more interested in the story than Oblivion. Oblivion just had so many cool things to do.

Fallout 3 as Oblivion was the easiest game I have ever played and not a true RPG in my eyes because of the SEVERE level scaling. I only enjoyed Oblivion with oscoro's overhaul and that made it basically another game entirely so I don't count it as Oblivion. All I can say is I feel very sorry for who ever played Oblivion on the XBOX and never got a chance to play the game it should have been.

Thanks Oscoro and Fallout 3 FTW.

Oscuro's Overhaul is great as a content mod. He adds so much content-wise. Don't get me wrong; he fixed several things about Oblivion I didn't like, but he really ended breaking them on other levels for me. My aforementioned gameplay changing mods get loaded after OOO.

But Fallout 3 is much more enjoyable out of the box. I didn't mind Oblivion when I first took it out of the box, but that's before I ran into all those mods. Bethesda did what great developers should do, and they fixed a lot of Oblivion's problems in Fallout 3. Of course, when mods come out to fix Fallout 3's problems, then they'll be included in whatever Bethesda has next. :D

Fallout 3 has what Oblivion lacked: personality.

I wasn't too sure what to think of Oblivion while playing it.. I liked the whole medieval aspect like hunting deer and creating poison from different combinations of plants.. and I was indifferent towards the fantasy aspect (using spells and the wizards guild and whatnot). But what really threw me off was the whole goblin / hell aspect. I hated the "Oblivion" part of Oblivion. I loved the assassins guild, the thieves guild.. hell, all of the guilds. But the main story was just awful. It would have been much more interesting if it didn't revolve around going into the same hellish bland environment over and over again. I would have much preferred if the story just skipped the Oblivion gates and instead was kept inside the normal world. The world itself was pretty immersive, although it was a bit desolate and static. It could have used some more liveliness.. I don't know how, but it needed it.

Fallout on the other hand.. I know exactly what I think of it. The world itself feels desolate.. which makes sense, because its a nuclear wasteland! At the same time, Bethesda balances this sort of loneliness with humor (like the G.O.A.T. test), interesting quests and characters, and best of all, reaction to your actions. What do I mean?

    Minor Quest Spoilers (Arefu)

I can name multiple situations I've encountered so far of how you play the game actually affects how the game treats you. I steal everything (and then pawn it off, I'm filthy rich).. and now everyone, whenever I get near a locked chest, they warn me not to try anything funny. I still do, but its really the thought that counts. Everything, besides the character animation, is immersive. It sucks you in. It's definitely one of my favorite games of all time, and I'm only on my second playthrough.

I'm planning on doing most of the quests and visiting most of the major areas with my sneaky pick-pocketing evil character. But for my next character (and probably last for a while), I'm going to try to go neutral and go all out melee / unarmed, just to see how that plays out.

I couldn't say the same for Oblivion. I made one sneaky assassin character, played all the quests through with him, and felt no urge to play it again. I tried recently to start again.. but I really had no motivation. Fallout is simply more fun.

I got both, and maybe its rose-colored lenses, but I really feel like I liked Oblivion way more than FO3. I just can't get into the setting as much with FO3, the whole wasteland thing and time period just doesn't mesh well with me. Oblivion was interesting and exciting, at least how I remember it. I should go back and play it.

Never finished Oblivion, on my second play through with FO3. I found the hell gates repetitive and tired of them quickly. Once that happened, I lost interest in the game. FO3 had me riveted all the way to the end. Now I am replaying it again to explore the wasteland.
